Hi,
at first, sorry for my bad english.
I used the xl-1s until 3 years ago, then bought me a DVX.
As nowadays, the viewfinder was too bad to judge the Quality of the Image.
But I got a damaged Hi-8 consumer camcorder, which had a cathode black & white viewfinder. (about 1,5 cm in diameter) I also bought two tubes via Ebay, which were a little bit bigger and tested them on the DVX.

Technically it was easy: Connecting the tube (or better the whole assembly, which was in the Hi-8 viewfinder) to the composite out or s-video luma out of the camera and getting 5V Power fom the cameraīs battery or from an external source.
The quality was stunning! (still to mention: compared to the original LCD) Why donīt they use tubes anymore? Before LCDīs came up, they were standard...

But I gave up my plans to modify the viewfinder of the DVX, because the housing of the viewfinder would have become too long. (The image has to have a certain distace to your eye.The LCD of the DVX is placed in the bottom of the viewfinder)
But maybe this kind of modification will work on the H1 or even the HVX, assuming that we still get to see a d o w n c o n v e r t e d signal in the LCD screen. (All LCD resolutions stated are still in the SD-range) .
On the H1 as well as on the xl-1/xl-2 It should be even easier, becouse the housing of the viewfinder should be designed for assembling a LCD o r a tube in it, - why setting up two assembly lines, at least for the cabinet-parts?
And the signal coming out of the camera has to feed both kinds of viewfinder. Not such a giant leap compared to a Pro viewfinder and you would void your warranty. But still a small step...

All the best,

No. I have the parts but did not start to build a viewfinder.
Did anyone try the viewfinder of a XL-1s/XL-2 on the XL-H1 to check wether the signal is is SD?
All the best,
