One of the first things I would like to do with my new HVX is down convert HD 720p (variable frame rates) to Dv tape so I can use my existing Vegas software set up. I was wondering how the HI Def 16:9 ratio translates to the 4:3 DV format.. is it "squeezed "into the 480 pixs (like an anamorphic lens would do) or does it end up letter boxed into the 4:3.

I think both.

I would think that is anamorphicaly squeezes on to the DV tape.

So you could decide after you shoot the footage, in Hd, which format, either letterboxed or squeezed, you want in DV. You could even have both Right? Because the original footage stays on the P2 card untill you delete it. ???

I tried this -- 16:9 720p footage came up as "squeeze mode" DV. Now, here's something that's confusing -- squeeze mode on the HVX is REAL 16:9, not electronically stretched! They kept the name as "squeeze mode", which is confusing and disappointing -- I'd rather they renamed it to something like "widescreen" mode. The "squeeze" mode on the HVX is native 16:9 widescreen, not electronically stretched like it is on the DVX. So "squeeze" has a different meaning on the HVX than it does on the DVX, just like "focus assist" does, and just like "24pN" does.
So -- dubbing down a 720p clip to DV resulted in a 16:9 widescreen DV image. I don't think you can get it to do a letterbox version or a center-cut extraction, I think it always does full-frame native 16:9 dubs. I tried putting the camera into letterbox mode and executing a dub, and it still came out as full-frame 16:9 "squeeze".

Ok, so if you are recording straight to DV tape you still have the option to "squeeze" or letterbox just like with the DVX100A-B, but from the P2 "dubbing down" the result seems to be only squeezed ( anamorphic). I guess thats good - they are getting as much resolution as they can into the DV format. Do you still think there is a possibility of getting a better DV picture on tape from the HVX than from the DVX100B. I know you haven't done any real tests but,.. How'd it look?

For 16:9, probably -- it's full 16:9 res, plus you have a sharper lens on the HVX than on the DVX, and perhaps lower noise too. For 4:3, I'm not sure. And I'm not sure about color differences and latitude etc., haven't tested those things yet.
