Chaps,

I'm putting together a system spec to buy for making indy films (shorts and features). Here's a couple of queries:

1. HD monitoring - am I right in thinking that a Decklink HD / HDLink and Dell 24" still isn't up to scratch for colour correction etc? I want a stand alone system in and out without relying on using an external facilities house).
In this scenario am I better off getting a HD Crt? Anyone got any opinions on the JVC DT-V100CG 10" HD Monitor ?http://www.planetdv.net/Content/Video%5FOutput%5FMonitors/
Cost is an issue here/ what are the alternatives?

2. Hard drive playback. If I get a G5 with a sonnet card and a couple of 500 gig drives (un raided) will that suffice for DVCproHD playback? (at this point it's only for HVX and not uncompressed).

3. If the drives are unraided what kind of throughput can I expect for DVCprohd - ie how many continuous streams? What is the playback sustained bandwidth required? Am I going to need to Raid to take advantage of the RT scaling in FCP (or is that only really for uncompressed HD)?

4. Quad vs Dual - For the DVCproHD codec using FCP (and occasional motion/graphics etc) do I really need the quad? Besides futureproofing and quicker renders is there any need? (I'm not a facility house and I stop for lots of tea breaks anyway...)

Sorry if this has been answered before (I've searched here and all over the web but I'm new to this. If I was American I'd say I was an HD virgin about to go to the Technology Prom and bust my Mac cherry. But I'm not so I won't. I've never been to a Prom.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jeff

To answer your questions....
1. If your going to use the dell monitor...skip the decklink..why spend the cash to use with a not very accurate monitor? Just use the video card and have final cut output full screen video. If you calibrate the monitor...you should be okay as long as you shoot acurately.

2.You can play any flavor of dvcpro on a standard sata 7200 rpm drive. RAID is best for redundancy..but not a must.

3. Not too sure of streams....at least 2 on a G5.

4. YOU DON'T NEED A QUAD. I have cut dvcpro hd on a single 1.8 G5. Obviosly for encoding and rendering faster is better..but again...whats your budget?

I've never cut anything on Vegas...so I'm not sure why your having problems viewing. Could be a crappy video card? I'm sure you could output DV stream via firewire through your camera or dv deck and into a monitor. Are you shooting DV, HDV or uncompressed video?

The only edits I've done on a pc was with Avid, NewTek toaster 4 and In-Sync's Speed Razor...but they went under and I switched to Mac & Final Cut Pro.
