View Full Version : Would you like some VFX help?

Lasercade

Hello, I'm a motion graphics designer by trade but I'd really like to help someone out with their Sci-Fest entry doing some Visual Effects shots. I'm most interested in doing things like set extensions and environments. It would interest me to work with someone who's story is not really effects driven and would like some VFX to support the mood.

But... I am also a huge fan of tv sci-fi with questionable effects like U.F.O., Doctor Who (Tom Baker era if you please), Battlestar Galactica (The original! Though I watched season 1 of the new series last month on dvd enjoyed it), Space 1999 etc. so I'm not against helping out with something in that vein as well.

If you're interested in talking, drop me an email with what you're up to at murphy@lasercade.com

thanks,
Michael C. Murphy

ooo vfx help sounds nice :)

Welcome to the board, Michael, and thanks for your generous offer. I'm sure you'll get tons of e-mails and find someone to work with. Heck, I'm gonna drop you one myself... set extensions and environments *drools*

Thanks! I wouldn't say I've gotten tons, but I did get a nibble which is great.

Hey I just saw this --

that's awesome that this contest keeps attracting people with talent and abilty that want to work with us. I'm still figuring out what my VFX needs are exactly but I'm excited to see your stuff -- any clips online I could look at? Assuming you aren't already booked up, seeing some clips might change the way I'm thinking about handling some of my story telling needs

thanks dude,

Jack

Ack, I knew I was forgetting something... Was going to get back to you, but been busy with all sorts of stuff not related to sci-fest. It would be really nice to see your work. Maybe it could drive me away from this crazy idea involving miniature set :cheesy:

lol, unless WETA starts a thread

"would you like some help with your miniatures ... er ... bigatures"

Yeah, he may make the time for you, John, but I think he's too busy otherwise.

Please E-mail me your resume to mbchambers4@adelphia.net
Thanks,
Scott
A guy offers some free services, you should be emailing him your resume!

You just said what most of us were probably thinking, Tim! :) Asking to see a portolio or some example of previous work is one thing ... but a resume when they're offering their services for free?

Jack Daniel Stanley
12-26-2005, 07:04 PM
hopefuly its a semantics issue and he meant portfolio or resume - or just some way of getting an idea of the guy's work.

I definatly think you have every right to see a sample of someone's work even if they are offering it for free, cuz your film is too important not to know what you are getting into.

ohh... and thanks for the VFX footage Norm ... still downloading ...

Hello everyone, I hope your projects are coming along.

As far as a reel -
Here is a little clip that shows some of the techniques that I would be using:
http://www.lasercade.com/kitty_low.mov

The background, box etc. are all a single photograph camera mapped in 3d. The kitten and the toybox handle are the only true cg elements.

I've been super busy up to the holidays but now I'm ready to work on some projects.

thanks,

mm

I totally agree. You definately need to see people's work before working w/ them. Like you said, it was just the wording that made me think "wow..."
I'm sure it wasn't meant to be pretentious.

Wow, that was impressive for working with a single photograph. I PM'd you a while back, Lasercade, but never heard back so I'll assume our project doesn't fit the FX you're looking to work with?

Murphy,

I still want to see those effects notes you have for my film. I've been busy as well, so no sweat there. Drop me an email.

Cheers, my man:beer:

I think this may be a dead end thread.

I haven't heard a word from this cat Lasercade in weeks. Like I told him in the final email that I sent, he could have at least dropped us a line saying that he was no longer interested.

It's a shame 'cause I was impressed with his demo.

It's probably to late to ask...
but are there any other effects guys willing to do a few shots for my film? I have a friend who's damn good, but I turned his offer to help down due to Lasercade. There may be enough left in the budget for a small $$ incentive.

Norm Sanders

Ahem, sure Callaghan, I'll help. *wink, wink*. Just send your footage right over .. should have it back to you before the deadline.

Sorry to hear about the lack of response from Laser. Very frusterating. We're in the same boat now with our composer who jumped on very quickly after reading the script, but now nothing (RMIStudios). We make the jump to another if I've not heard from him tonight. Hopefully he's alive & well, but other than that, it's frusterating.

Ah well that makes three of us in the same boat. Sorta glad to hear at least something is going wrong with your production, Norm  Like I posted in another thread I'm too left without a VFX guy (the 3d part of it, the rest is on me) and it is indeed frustrating. Only 3 weeks, geez...

LOL! It's not been perfect, trust me, but we've felt pretty fortunate to have what's come together so far. I was prepared to do the VFX myself, but just found out that one of the IT guys that works at the Federal Credit Union my day job's at, has experience with Cinema 4D. I should see some examples of what he's wanting to do with the short today ... and know quickly if he'll be a contributor to our short or not.

Slimothy

Norm, I'm sure you already know, but if that composer is jumpin ship there were a few others that were eager to be a part of it.

Norm Sanders
01-11-2006, 10:51 PM
Thanks Tim. I finally connected with Rojas via phone last night, and he'd apologized for being out of communication for so long. Says he's still on board, and got a sample to me early this AM. We like what we've heard so far, and I gave him a lot of specific direction for moods, etc. for each section of the short.

Hopefully we'll have a home run soon, at least for music/score. If for some reason anything does fall through within the next week or so, then I know there's some very talented back up on here as well.

Last I checked his profile, he was on here just a couple days ago (10th). Too bad he doesn't at least have the class to pop in here & say SOMETHING as to why he's decided to drop the ball on those he purposely raised interest from.

Michael Murphy has risen from the dead!

We communicated at length today, and I
am more than a little glad to say that we
are on the same page creatively. He shared
some schematics with me, and all I can say is
that his effects shots are going to be top shelf.

I'm happy to still have him aboard...
He's gonna bring a lot to the table.

Norm Sanders
01-15-2006, 01:27 AM
So did you have to track him down, or did he contact you? Maybe the REALLY talented ones just don't think about communication being a priority, as I've had the same issue with Chris Rojas/RMIStudios, bless his heart.

I FINALLY track him down after about 9-10 days of ZERO communication, and am surprised to hear he's totally still on board, and was working on stuff. I was glad to hear it, though a little frazzled and with a few more grey hairs on my not-too-old 33-year-old head.

Glad it's working out for you, Callaghan.

Hey guys,
Sorry about the lack of communication...
As I explained to Chad, things got super busy this holiday season with work and otherwise - I was also out of email contact on a trip for a bit. Still, I should have been more available - my fault.

I've discovered a few emails in my junkmail folder for some help - it seems my work's spam filter is a bit too aggressive. So if I haven't gotten back to you: I'm full up for this contest!

I've got my hands full with a shot in Chad's project, which is coming along pretty well.

Sorry for anyone that I didn't respond to - best intentions, bad timing...

Gentelmen, I need some VFX for the shortfilm that i have just finished editing.

Basically i need some compositing and 3D modeling. It is not difficult, but it must be very well done, because our project deserves it.
This is not an action scif fi film with explosions and laser guns. This is more like Soderberg´s Solaris film style.

In the same way i can show some footage from me i would like to see some VFX from the people that could help here.

I can offer to be credited on this great film. I dont think that represents a problem since no one here is for the money.

Time is against us, so we need to work quickly here.
Please email me with offers and questions. I am sure we can do something nice.
Than you for reading this!

good luck to you man -- but I don't think "gentleMEN" applies -- I think it was one gentleMAN and he's booked up for this contest.

so you might want to cast a wider net in craig's list or somethiing (or at least the cafe) because this isn't a thread where a bunch of VFX dudes check to see who needs help, it was started by lasrecade and he says he's booked up.

again good luck.

I am kinda worried cause my project for the contest is really simple, visually. Which is to say that it is totally devoid of fancy SFX and the like (the most complex visual thing I did in post involved 3 key-frames and Vegas' blur plug-in...wow!). So, just wondering, for the sake of knowing, how much VFX did other people do? How complex? How pervasive? You know, basically, tell me how great your stuff is, so I can feel really bad about mine!

I have no CGI. Just some simple composite effects (4),

Nothing wrong with that. Quite often more effective.

And, of course, simple+good is inherently better than complex+crappy. :)

Really quick...

Mike Murphy did a fantastic job for my Sci-Fest entries big fx shot.

In the medium of 3D animation, he is an incredible artist.

Cheers:beer:, Murphy.

I don't really have any special effects either. Just one simple composite.

I took the opportunity to teach myself some things. Nothing overly complicated.

Had fun doing it. Hope everyone else has fun watching the result. :)
