... because the XL-h1 is available now at zotzdigital and B&H.

Love to hear some reports and see some footage from the early adopters and late bloomers.

Perhaps I shall just...talk to meself then. It never hurts to have a little conversion with ones own body. Hmmm ... what to talk about....

Hi. How are you? Oh, I'm very well, thank you. Etc.

Focus This!

It's okay to talk to yourself, it's just when you answer yourself or argue with yourself that it's time to sekk professional help!

Well, since this IS dvxuser and everyone seems to be breathless and goo goo ga ga over the HVX, the H1 would seem like an also-ran.

I was at the expo on Wed., and let me tell you, the H1 is no slouch. I've seen native footage from both cameras, (Watchmaker was amazing) played with both, and to me, the H1 is easily it's equal (if not better) in terms of resolution and tweakability. It's strengths are different than the HVX's, but for what I most desire from an affordable HD camera, it's got it. Lens options, SDI, and the ability to shoot HD on cheap tape are wonderful things. 24F is very nice. I don't care if it's a deinterlace technically--in the right hands it can look every bit as "progressive" meaning "film-like" as any camera out there. The Watchmaker footage proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

It's a poor man's F900, but this time the poor man just about gets it all!

Canon is going to distribute a DVD with HD clips from the camera in the near future.
Until then, try not to gulp down too much HVX Kool-aid.

btw, loved the Clockwork Orange reference in the thread title. One of my favorite movies of all time.

If Kubrick were making that movie today, (low budget, gritty) it'd probably be with
an HVX.

The XLH1 is definitely no slouch. It spanks the FX1/Z1 easily. Its resolution is on par with the HVX, maybe even a little higher. Noise performance is about the same or higher. Dynamic range is no match for the HVX, the HVX probably has at least 1.5 stops, maybe 2 stops better dynamic range. But the XLH1 is, as Elton says, no slouch.

[...] the HVX probably has at least 1.5 stops, maybe 2 stops better dynamic range. What do You mean by that? Is the dynamic range the same as the contrast scale? Or is that redarding to the aperture?

Kubrick wouldn't touch anything other than film.

The HVX retains highlight detail much deeper than the XLH1 does. The XLH1 burns out to white easily.

lol.. so so wrong my friend. When Kubrick was gearing up for AI he was meeting with Lucas to make AI a digital movie. AI got pushed back to make Eyes Wide Shut.. and that was that.

Yes; I beleive Kubrick would have junkied on it

Here's a Quote from Matt Modine

"... He loved technology and he loved the advancement, the things that were taking place with photography. I think he would have been fascinated with the whole digital thing that’s happening now. The ability to make computer generated graphics where film is going today, Stanley wouldn’t have just been somebody who was participating with it; he would have been a leader in that technology. "

Even Lynch is shooting Digital now. So take that elitist shite somewhere else baby!

How much of that is by default? The camera has knee and other controls, couldn't it possibly be stretched further via tweaking?

One thing I will say is the H1 is the resolution king. From what I've seen of the HVX (got a little bit of P2 footage at the show) 1080 24p looks more like an uprez than the H1. Hope I'm wrong because I'd love to own both and intercut with them in future projects.

I think Kubrick's death is faked and he's really the catalyst behind the RED camera!

I notice this as well. I only spent a couple of hours with the H1 so it's hard to say what could be adjusted without reading the manual. There is a learning curve on the H1 and it certainly wasn't second nature to me. I did notice that highlights (in the stock setup) are not handled well. I attributee this to my lack of knowledge on setting up the XL-H1. In all the clips I've edited from the H1 so far, the highlights have all been well over 100IRE.

hehe when Modine came to UK for the FMJ shoot, he brought along (being a hobbyist photographer, a good one btw) a large-format Rolleiflex camera, the same one as Kubrik used earlier in his carrier as "Look" photographer, to impress the director... Well, he failed... when Kubrik saw it, he bought Matthew a new 35mm Minolta

Unless Kubrick had an intense effects heavy movie (Ai comes to mind) i still think he would have used 35mm. and shot in 4:3 aspect or Full acadamy , as he said , The fate of all movies are to end up on TV. Guess he wasnt around till HD sets started popping up. He died before he should have. :(
