How would I attempt something like this?
The board would have all the pictures on it. References to the video I would put in after.
I would then go through the movements numerous times, practicing the different angles and flow of the entire composition.
Once in post, I go through and put the video over the pictures i want to move. I would use AE, using 3D layers, changing the angles and postion to always cover the picture reference.
I dont know for sure how they did it. I don't think they keyed anyting out, so I belive they just composited it in. That is how I would do this, and from watching this, was very impressed by the whole thing. I am going to try to do something like this for a future project. Thanks for the post.

I think I could do the entire thing within Liquid Edition.
I noticed none of the animated photographs had green pushpins in them, so I'm guessing there were mini-greenscreens on the board.
Not sure about the writing on the paper on the board -- I think at least some of that was added in post.

YOU KNOW WHAT!!!
Here's what I think they did. I think they created the entire board in say photoshop or something. Added video the it, then, used a camera in AE or some other compositing application and went around the board. This would explain some of the quick camera movements, focus changes, and smooth motions of the camera.
That is how I think they did it.

I wondered about that as well.
It's a damn fine job, whatever they did.

From the horse's mouth (at Creative Cow):
Well, I have to admit, I'm totally flattered that you find the video so amazing! I literally had it on my todo list to put up our last few pieces of work on the Cow but evidently someone beat me to it...
The piece is composited ENTIRELY in After Effects. I figured the camera motion was a success when I showed the client an early draft he asked me if I had actually filmed the corkboard. (and to toot our own horn, the deadline for the video was BEFORE the similar looking Nelly Furtado video came out, there's also another rap video that I saw recently that has a very similar treatment).
I had had a alot of ideas of throwing in some 3D thumbtacks and maybe some curved photos but just ran out of time.
I only use Vegas for the odd task, I actually used it when it was only an audio editing app and still tend to use it that way. It's a killer app now, but I spend most of my days in AE.
For what it's worth you can check out our demo reel at http://www.astrid.ca (this video has yet to be posted)

slick spot. It looks like he used the wiggler on the position keyframes to get the unsteady handycam look.

Wuddn't me.
Very nice indeed. Up until the middle, I thought it might have been shot practically and then video composited over. However, by the middle of the piece, some of the angles of the corkboard from the "camera's" POV were too unrealistic. All the same, all of the objects on the board were very well placed to give a definite sense of realism.
