Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I started a thread about my first music video directing experience last summer. Now I'd like to share my latest work.....here's the link to the trailer of my short film HUBRIS. It's a comedy centered around speed dating. It was shot with the XL2 over 4 shooting days this past June 2005.

Editing was done with FCP 5 with some CC via 55mm.

Hope you enjoy it. Feedback is most welcome. I will begin submitting to film festivals starting next month. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions/comments.

EDIT***Made some minor tweaks thanks to the feedback I've received*** - I appreciate the input. :)

thanks for your time,

Good job. The concept is very intriguing. The characters look like a good mix. I am left wanting to see more - which is good.

The set pieces look very well produced but the shots at the house seem much weaker. The wide shots here look pretty dreadful. It's a shame.

Just a note on the trailer: the title card says "the girls had a plan of their own" but there is nothing supporting that (i just watched it again..i see something with handcuffs). You may want to add something there (maybe even some audio under the lights going off). Even if you dont want to give something away, your twist is not clear at all.

Love the art work on the web site. Really strong. Just a note. There seems to be audio embedded in the site which is frustrating when the trailer starts and you hear both.

There are definitely some things to learn from but there are a lot of positive elements all around. Great job.

Thanks for the feedback.

For the trailer, I did make the conscious choice not to show anything that the girls have planned. I was hoping it would make the viewer want to see the film to see what the girls have up their sleeves.

It was the intention to not be the type of trailer that shows everything and spoil "the twist." But I can understand if it's not done well enough to show that intention and just leaves the viewer confused.

It's a Catch-22.....showing too much is bad. Showing too little can be just as bad. I'll keep this in mind if I re-cut the trailer.

For the embedded audio on the website....there's a small icon on the right upperhand corner that alllows you to turn it off. The webmaster didn't make it very large to notice if you're not looking for it. But you can shut it off if you like. :)

Thanks again for the comments.

Man, i NEED to see what did the girls planned. The plot looks interesting, something that 90% of shortfilms lack.

:D

The trailer looks great. I would definitely like to see the movie. The website is very nicely done as well. It was easily apparent that the music could be turned off. No problem there. It looks like you had a lot of fun making the movie. The XL2 is a great camera in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Good work!

Where do people get middle aged actors from? Where do find poeple and do you pay?

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far. It's always interesting (and nervewracking) to see what others think of your work.

KHendrix2 - It was a blast making the film. All the speed dating was improv and I have hours of footage that couldn't be used...but were hilarious. I'm going to put it in the DELETED SCENES section for the DVD.

egproductions - I didn't pay any of the actors. I previously worked with one of the main actors on another film and loved his skills, so I wrote HUBRIS specifically for him. He recruited the other main actor from his circle. All the others were cast based on open calls and referrals.

I used the following resources to cast the other ten people for the film.

http://www.nowcasting.com - National database
http://www.theatrebayarea.org - Northern CA
http://www.bayareacasting.com - Northern CA

Hope that helps you out.

That was a very good trailer. Had the right amount of info, not too much, not too little. I did however wish to hear about what the whole lock and key thing was about with the wemon. "Ill see you in hell?" It made it seem like a murder movie, lol. Great job though I love the colors and great cast.
