ABOUT QUANTUM STREAMING

As many of you may remember the massive server failure situation due to the enormous volume of downloads we experienced with Zombiefest, we have worked with ITIVA to resolve this, and are excited to present the Sci-fest online viewing with ITIVA's new Quantum Streaming. This new immediate streaming technology will allow us to host Better Quality Entries, that streams instantly and the performance actually improves with the amount of simultaneous viewers, well still protecting the owner's content. Quantum Streaming is expected to be publicly available mid next year, and DVXuser is excited to be one of the first resources to test this revolutionary new service.

Hey all...

My name is Shane Ingles... I have been a member on the site for a long time, but just today was sent an email regarding the Sci-Fest... So I was intrigued... Then after checking the site and seeing how respected you are Jarred. I thought I'd check you up on IMDB... Where I noticed you were born in Edmonton... (I'm an east coaster from Ontario)... And now just recently I see on your post that your in Vancouver.

Well me too.

Disclaimer...

I know that I am a little drunk and buzzed right now...

We run a comedy night here in Gastown.

Anyways... We just finished shooting our Sci-Fi Comedy Interactive Pilot at the CineWorks Studio.

I'm apologizing in advanced for being "that guy" and bringing this up again, but did the argument from the old rules thread ever get settled regarding shooting wider than 16:9, but still keeping it in an anamorphic frame?

I searched through it and if Jarred or Barry ever chimed in on it, I missed it.

I'd hate to be DQ'ed with prizes like that on the line.

They finally said that you can do whatever you want, but Jarred will crop every shortfilm to 16:9. So yes you can go up to 2.35.

MY question is: How do you know for sure that all shorts were done with a dvx100? Anything shot with a XL2 or FX1 will look very similar when CC is applied. So....?

Barry_Green

I'd think Andromeda would be fine, as would a 35mm adapter too. But Macgregor, if "Similo" is your Sci-Fest entry, you can't have that banner promoting it...

Norm Sanders
11-26-2005, 12:19 PM
I really want to win best sound. I would love to own a skycrane!

I'm PRETTY sure that it reads BEST STUNT DESIGN, though that font is a little hard to read ... I can see the Skycrane being more associated with stunts than sounds, as the angle, etc. will help with those kinds of shots.

As far as the Q on 35mm adapters, I sure HOPE they're accepted, as there's nothing that states otherwise, and I'm looking to purchase a couple of them for our short!

I'm confused about what to submit entries as.

The .wmv or .mov is so everyone can watch and vote online. Then you can send your entry in on dvd to be put on the Official Sci-Fest DVD w/ everyone's entry.

Jarred Land
11-26-2005, 01:17 PM
This time around I may get everyone to send an actual DVD with mpeg stream on it for the DVD.. so everyone makes it because nobody seemed to send AVI's properly. Then I will just rip the DVD for the Sci-Fest DVD. I am just scared people wont make anamorphic mpg's properly, but if so It just wont play on the DVD anamorphic.

That file is sent in the mail, to us for the DVD, it is also where we get your address from for the free shirt to get sent to, and is basically your entry ticket.

The WMV you will upload, and that is for the viewing online.

I have a problem...wen i finish the movie..and mail it to you...i cant burn DVDs on my computer.

and if i decide to..which maybe not....send an AC-3 audio file with the movie?

This is one of the massive problems I need to resolve.. is that as simple as it is to ask for one file from people, for some reason it just wont happen. You should be able to export a mpg file from your NLE, but if you dont know how I think we are going to try and make some tutorials on the top NLE's to get people conformed.

Barry_Green
11-26-2005, 02:00 PM
With 60 or 80 or 100 or 200 possible entries coming this time around, I think there's got to be some hard and fast compliance with some rules. "If you can't submit it in the proper format, you don't get in" -- something like that. Either that or just seriously limit the whole DVD experience, maybe limit it to the top 20 vote-getters (assuming that they submit the file in the proper format). It's too much work for Jarred to do for free, I think the responsibility has to be on the contestants themselves to make sure that they send the files in the right format, by the deadline.

blckhawk542
11-26-2005, 02:15 PM
I can submit in any format...wat format is best suited then? MPEG rite?
Then ill jus render it an mpeg for DVD in Vegas...but then the Audio is gonna be separate.

im jus saying..i cant burn a DVD..so you cant jus like rip it..

i can only do like a regular CD but with the video file on there...which should be really easy to copy the video from there to your drive.
...im kinda confused..and i think im confusing a few of you too..

HorseFilms
11-26-2005, 02:16 PM
Yep, just like any other film festival. If you don't submit in the proper format, they toss it.

Norm Sanders
11-26-2005, 02:39 PM
blackhawk, there's no way you'll be able to fit an uncompressed AVI onto a CD ... WAY too large of a file. You MIGHT be able to squeeze a decent MPEG2 onto it, with a separate AC3 file. No need to "burn" as in author the DVD ... just place the file on it, which will make it easier for Jarred to pull off, whether you have it on CD or DVD. DVD, in this case, would just allow you more room for a better/less compressed file.

Jarred Land
11-26-2005, 02:43 PM
yes... a decent encoded mpeg2 file should be about 270mb at 6 minutes.. good for most Cd-r's. I dont know if its just cause you dont have a DVD burner or not.

Anyways, for anyone that screws up, the FTP corrections done will be alot less painful at that size than the AVI DV 1GB files last time.

How would I create a data DVD? DVD Architect cant do it rite? wat about Roxio version 5?

Norm Sanders
11-26-2005, 06:57 PM
I know NERO can ... I'm sure Roxio can as well. I'd imagine that any software that can help you AUTHOR a DVD should certainly be able to burn a plain DATA DVD as well, though I've not tried it with Architect. Could be wrong.

its a lame font i know.

its sound. best sound. dont know what Stunt Design is, but it sounds cool.

Stunt Design would be for the person with the best PLANS and/or BLUE PRINTS of a stunt sequence, without actually executing it. This of course would not be able to be awarded until long after the DVD was released with the BTS on it.

Seriously cool prize, but how does that relate to sound? I.E. Serious Magic helps with making sure you've got light levels correct, etc., so I can see how that fits ... and DVRig Pro certainly fits with best camera work. :undecided Just curious, that's all.

BTW, Jack, love the surfer dude ... too bad your idea's blown. Thanks for sharing all the same, right up there with my script I posted in the other thread.

never ever heard of that being called Stunt Design.. and I hang around with Stunt Co-ordinators more than I should. I'll take your word for it though.

And it doesnt relate to sound.. but we dont have any sound prizes so its the next best thing. If youl have a problem with it, if your short wins im sure you can give it to someone else if its a moral issue ha ha ha.

Have you started shooting yet Norm?

I was kidding around ... then again, I AM pretty good at that game Balderdash (sp?) ... basically a game of B.S.
Ah, no. I'll keep the crane, thanks. (if I got best sound ... which, now that I've landed the AKG 480b/ck63 combo, thanks to MattinSTL, I at least won't be out of the running)
I'm teaming with waltind on this. Finished the script this past week, auditions are this Wednesday, and we shoot December 9-11 to bang it all out in one weekend. Lots of time for post.

it's an amazing prize and value ...
i was already stoked about the flow pod -- just being able to run and gun, then drop the leg and get some static shots -- but the price for that complete systems is awesome too when you compare it to simmillar items meant for heavier cameras, but we don't need something for a heavier camera!

I also wonder if you could use the monopod as a makeshift / impromptu crane, like extend it and just muscle it like a boom pole from point A to B while the flowpod keeps the camera level ... hmmmm ...

That just wouldn't be fun.

Norm Sanders
11-29-2005, 12:20 AM
May not be as fun, but would be it fair for the film that truly did rock everyone else's world, but because only one prize could be awarded per film, then the 2nd rate films in all the others would earn prizes instead? If it's close, maybe, but it would stink to have one that CLEARLY stood above all the rest in a particular category, not get the prize just because they already one somewhere else.

If it's the latter, I'd LOVE to work with you. Unfortunately, we've already agreed to another young, aspiring composer to let him score our short on spec. That said, I'm kicking my own ass now after seeing your offer. Ouch!

But my larger question -- is it permissable to privately send a section you are working on to a few friends to get help on? I think Barry worked in John's script some - but i can see how this might be different.

But there have been times I've thought - I wish I could just show this part to so and so and ask them about it, etc.

Well, I'm sure you don't HAVE to, you just won't be eligible for prizes (same as if you shoot with any other camera) if we have to watch your flick interlaced, or anything other than glorious 24P. :)

If you have a DVX100A and you are enetering a contest for distribution on the web and DVD only and don't shoot 24pa for narrative work as a general rule, you should have your camera taken away from you and given to Black Hawk. :cheesy:

24pa on web = smaller file
24pa to DVD = true 24p just like a film

30p or 60i makes no sense to me unless you doin a doc or worried about strobin.

Chris is welcome to score as many of the films as he likes. No problem.

I like what I hear so far. I went ahead and PM'd you Chris ... probably buried now in a stack of PM's from interested parties.

I'm 99% positive Jarred/Barry wouldn't have a problem with it. Spidey nailed it with the fact that the same composers are used for many different films, sometimes with the same films with nominations for awards.

I never shoot anything but 24P. What's the point of having a DVX if you don't?

Shaw

Full resolution 30p and cinegamma =)

I shoot either 24p or 30p depending on the subject. For instance, sci-fest is something I might consider shooting 30p for if it was allowed since the added "digitalness" might be a cool effect.

PixelMagic
12-02-2005, 12:57 PM
Well, 30p has it's own cool look. But I agree, 24p is best for cinematic I suppose. But this is off topic anyway.

That said, I look foward to everyone's entry.

Are we allowed to post Work In Progress CGI, as long as it's not an actual frame from our film?

Yeah anyone can make one.
Caveat 1 -- to COMPETE you have to shoot your film on any generation DVX or the HVX
Caveat -- to vote, you have to have 100 posts, but you can enter with Zero or One Hundred

So anyone can enter but again to compete you have to shoot DVX or HVX. To exhibit, however, and have a thread dedicated to you you can shoot on an XL2 or VHS or Pixel vision.

There are also rules as to what format you have to shoot -- see the first post in this thread.

Nope. Some guy posted some makeup tests for the last contest and they asked him to take 'em down. The philosophy being that any BTS stuff like that would be a form of marketing and they try to keep it a Zero Marketing contest until it actually starts so you can't build gigantic buzz for your film.

I wish I could post stuff too though so I could get feedback from other members on stuff I'm trying too figure out

Hi, all. My name is Harris, and I'm a recently-converted DVX user (I was using an XL1s until 24p-envy tore my soul in half).

Anyway, I just learned of this contest. If this is my first post, now, in December, less than two months from the submission deadline, can I still enter?

Thanks. Nice community here.

Yes we had Portuguese with subtitles last contest.
There are no creative limitations as to tone or whatever, so funny, scarey, angst ridden is up to you. It just has to be scifi - which has never been officiallly defined in the rules.

Jarred Land
12-10-2005, 08:56 PM
full rights to put them on the SciFest Festival DVD yes.. but your not entering a distribution agreement with us, meaning after the contest your free to sell your short to anyone, or make your own DVD etc... your just giving us license for use.

Kaz

Does the running length include credits? Cuz man, I'm cutting it WAYYYY close...

Jarred Land
12-12-2005, 01:18 AM
you can drop the credits for the online entry.. and just send a credited version on the DVD.

Jack Daniel Stanley
12-12-2005, 02:28 AM
you can also put them as a single frame at the end so people can pause there if they REALLy wanna know.

Also, each film gets a dedicated thread for feedback and discusiion, each filmmaker starts their own thread and you can credit your people there too

I know what you mean about cutting it close, I keep re reading th scenes out loud and visualisizing them while timing with a stop watch - very tight editing going on.

Quick question on the BEST SCREENPLAY AWARD:

How is best screenplay determined, since the actual film may differ some from the screenplay, or may come across differently ... especially if the writer was someone different than the one who actually directed it and/or edited it?

During the Academy Awards, they'll typically show/read the opening of a scene of the winning screen play to show how rich the writing was, how well detailed the scene, etc. Will the film makers be submitting PDF's of the screenplays as well?

Jack Daniel Stanley
12-12-2005, 10:33 PM
I would love that.

Brandon Rice

Good question Envision... I would really like a shot at winning BEST SCREENPLAY.

Norm Sanders
12-12-2005, 10:36 PM
I have no doubt yours would/will be a contender ... especially with how confident you are of it (or from what I've seen in the posts).

Jack's will probably rock as well, especially with all his theater/writing experience.

Brandon Rice
12-12-2005, 11:30 PM
Yeah. Jack's Zombiefest short was really good as well!

It's so subjective, you know. I'm really confident in the script, and I really like it, and worked hard to get it to where I like it, but... other people may not think the same...

I'm excited about this competition, we'll see a lot of great stuff!

Jack Daniel Stanley
12-13-2005, 01:15 PM
ha, thanks!

but as my script was just completed Sunday and the number of days to shoot before christmas is constantly shrinking, I'm afraid a script is all I may have, lol.

With Zombie fest the mythology was so known within a few well known vaiables. Not so whith sci fi where its up to the writer to invent things out of thin are from the single individually percieved phenomenon to whole worlds like Blade Runner and Mad Max. So its been hard to whittle all that exposition down into 6 min and tell a story -- so that's why my script was just completed and my productions in jeopardy -- are the actors still on call -- can we shoot before Christmas can we actually pull off the art direction, and prop this thing in 4 or 5 days -- etc.

On the Script thing though -- Maybe they would let us start a script thread once the contest is officially opened and then whover wants to could post links to their scripts there.

Brandon Rice
12-13-2005, 01:37 PM
That would be cool! Yeah, I know what you mean about keeping the story to six minutes. That's been killin' me.

Norm Sanders
12-13-2005, 01:40 PM
I like that idea (posting links to scripts, etc. ... once the contest has started - or however Jarred wants to handle that).

I couldn't get my story within 6 minutes either, so we've got an 11 page script, and a film that'll pace out to 12-13 minutes. But, I already know what scene(s) we're going to cut for the DVX fest to hit the six minute mark. We've anticipating that the entire short (the 12-13 minute version) will be good enough to send to other festivals afterwards, as well as possibly sell the DVD with tons of BTS, etc. Put it this way, you'd be AMAZED at the cool props you can put together from the Fred Meyer garden center products. :)

Who knows.

Brandon Rice
12-13-2005, 01:45 PM
Cool- Very much the same situation with our film. It's an 11 page script. Times out to about 11-12 min. But, I'll be doing some creative editing to keep the story intact, and the flow, into a 6 min. piece for DVX fest.

GenJerDan
12-13-2005, 04:14 PM
Y'all are doin' it wrong. It's not try-to-trim-it-down-to-6-minutes, it's try-to-avoid-going-over-6-minutes. Hitting it from the other end.
