View Full Version : First test with the new Letus35 adapter

Well today was my first test with it since i got it earlier this week. Only thing i noticed is that I wasnt' zoomed in enough on teh focus screen. So you can see a little vignetting and some grain yet. That will be addressed in the next test.
So far the letus35 is fairly lightweight and gets the job done on a budget. Right up my alley.
Here are some grabs.
Camera is a Sony VX2100 ---> Letus35 ---> Nikon FE 50mm SLR lens

I don't think i was zoomed in enough on the focus screen since there is a little vignetting and stuff. It just takes a day or so to get used to using it. I will try to get some good footage soon.

That looks pretty nice. Compared to the other vx2100 footage I saw with a letus35, yours looks WAY better.

Thanks. I think most of the grain thats in the shots ( grabs and video clip ) was from there not being enough light... ( was even getting dark outside. ) so the camera was boosting the gain. Most of the time it was at +3dB and sometimes over +12dB

Is it me, or is lots of people buying the letus35, seems to be wotking really well. Good footage.

I like the stills but 60i + 35mm would give it a weird film effect.

What do you mean? Would give it? or it does give it?
ICED OUT!

the letus seems to be a good buy. Your footage looks better than the screen caps-
overall I think the letus is a solid product. Reflex, any way you can post a photo of what the letus looks like on your camera?
thanks-

Hmm...I liked some of it, for some reason I'm not too impressed by it. Maybe if you had the chance to really get out and do some shooting as this is obviously just around the house and stuff. Keep us posted. Tim.

Well, I like the adapter.
Hey, reflex, turn your automatic gain limit down to 6DB.
That way, it can't screw up your picture too badly.
:-)
I built my own adapter, but I must say, the letus looks tempting. I have a VX2000, and with my own adapter, I must say, I LOVE the 60i with 35mm look.
It's gorgeous.

How much noise does it make?

Would it work to step up a tiny 37mm camera to this thing, or would that just be a complete waste of time and money? Could the result turn out good? Could I trust these letus guys?

yeah i'm sure it would make a difference. You'd have to check with Quyen though. Yeah he's a totally cool guy and he got back to me with every question right away and shipping from CA to me ( WI ) was really fast - like about 2- 3 days after he had the unit put together.
I just went out and did another vid - if you give me a few i can upload it and then give everyone a link... it's a little better video than what i posted before.

I bought one for my panny GS150. I'm very pleased with the results so far. I do have to throw a lot of light on things because of the poor low-light performance of the 150, but once I have things lit correctly, the image is great.

Ok well here's my next test video.
Things I must apologize for:
1) the shakyness of the video -- I didn't secure the camera SUPER well so during bumps it will shake a bit.
2) The grain. -- I forgot to turn on the power to move the focus screen.
3) the quicktime codec -- seems that the QT version gets washed out a bit more and isn't as clear. I wanted to keep teh file sizes down though....
Anyway, I will try to get an actual person next with some dialog and remember to lose the grain next time.

Whoa, be careful, you could spawn a Mac vs. PC debate with a question like that. ;-)
Probably, you've got your videocard set to handle the quicktime files. I'm not sure how all that works, but I know I've done it by accident before, so that the video overlays. It caused a really washed out image on all MOV files, but other programs were fine.
It's probably in your quicktime control panel.

Sure thing. But maybe I should start a new thread. It might be off topic for this one, since it's for Reflex's tests.

www.letus35.com You can buy it there! And the adapters thread size is 58mm, so it will fit perfectly.

Thanks  I just finished shooting day 1 of a music video. TOTALLY a guerrilla shoot, one light, a few hours to shoot in that location... so it was a little tough.
Here's some grabs. Color and all that isnt' consistent just becuase i was trying out some different looks and what not. Day two of shooting at a different location will be in about 2 weeks..so finished product should be @ the end of the month.

This is probably a really n00b question, but these 35mm adapters have really intrigued me as of late. From what I've read on the Letus35 page it seems like they just sell it with the lens mounts. No lens included. Is that correct? Do you have to supply your own Canon or Nikon lens?

Reflex-The grabs look super, super soft. Almost out of focus? Is that on purpose? Tim.

Right. You tell them what lenses you plan on using and then they will supply the correct mount. Then getting the lens is up to you. i.e. I have a 50mm nikon so i asked for the nikon mount.

Yeah actually. I just used some magic bullet on them to get a general idea of what I'm trying to do. So it's adding both white and black diffusion on most of the grabs while bumping contrast too. That might not be the final look. After the next shooting day, I will start cutting it. I will have more lights by then and a crowd some other shots so hopefully it will come out alright.
Actually there are a couple more you can check out here if you're bored.

Well finished up shooting for the most part last night... wow... what a clusterf*ck. We needed some crowd shots so went to a place that the band recommended..haha tons O drunken people, power problems ( like all kinds of sh*t plugged in to powerstrips and stuff, not my problems ) I"m suprised that none of my stuff was broken. Screaming people ugh... anyway I didn't get much done so I'll start on it today and see what i can come up with....

curious I own a vx2100 also and would you recommend the letus35?
or should I wait for the g35. cause I've been either wanting to build one or buy one.
reflex
12-20-2005, 11:32 AM
I would get teh L35 just because of the price. It's does it's job well. The G35 is probably a bit better but for a 1400 ( i think? ) price i'm not sold. If you want a low cost functional adapter... go with the letus... if you want a more top of the line adapter that should easily work on other cameras and I would assume HD cams... then go with the G35. It just depends on what you can afford. Sort of like buying a car. A Honda Civic will get you where you wanna go with some style and it's affordable, but maybe you want something a little nicer looking/ a little higher end.
