This is what we should do....Mike-Do you think you'd be able to do something like this? Or maybe someone who has the MY35 live close to someone w/ a Letus. These two seem to be the best ones in that price range. Also, soon there will be the SG35 from the UK which is around 350 or so. It appears as if the My35 has the best exterior design, while the letus is the only one that flips. We should definately get some tests going.
Tim, the only way I know of ay GOOD comparisons would be to have all the adapters side-by side tested at the same time. That way lighting, subject, cameras, etc. are all the same.
I've got the Letus35, so if Mike Dawson, or anyone else wanted me to do side by sides, waltind (my production partner for our Sci-Fi short) and I could put our DVX100a's together & post comparisons.
I will say that externally, Mike's is a little sleeker looking. I also like the way it appears to cup around/over the focus ring. For the Letus35, you won't see the grain as you do in the My35, because the GG is vibrating (vs. spinning like in some other adapters). There's been question if this slight vibration may further soften the image, but jdanstan has come up with a pretty cool way to compensate for it, cranking up the camera's core detail, while setting it to normal matrix for less noise.
I also think Mike's may be a little bit less expensive. Like anything, I think there are always pro's & con's to every side/product.
I honestly don't have a bias at this point ... just happen to own the Letus35 as it was the first affordable adapter I could get my hands on the quickest before we had to shoot our Sci-Fi short. I also liked the fact that the manufacturer was in my neck of the woods, so I could save on shipping time as well.
Mike, if you'd like to have comparisons of the My35 up against the Letus35, shoot me a PM.

I don't know who could be the tester?? not say my adapter will be better but you can see is the extra 100 for the letus is worth it. Me and some guys in toronto could do it if any one can supply the adapters?
Thanks every one

Tim, the Letus35 doesn't flip ... yet. Quyen's working on a version that will be SLIGHTLY longer to take care of ANY barrel distortion that you might notice if you had a straight edge (wall, etc.) near the outside of the glass, and it will also be a little larger all around as it will accomodate a series of four mirrors inside that will not only flip it right side up, but have it turned the correct way as well (flipped left/right).
I think this version will be around $150+ more, but it'd be WELL worth it, as it would be the only one on the market I'm aware of, short of the mini35, that could accomplish this. Also, the less you have to do in post (flipping images, etc.), the less degraded/compressed the final image should be.
He's still working on this, though, so for now you still have to flip the image like all other 35's.

Hey Quyen, my mistake. By the looks of your site, you've been busy & got it done already! Great job, and for less than I thought it'd be.
Ryan or I will have to get over there soon to check it out. Looks like there may be a 35mm adapter shoot out here pretty soon between the Letus35, My35, and hopefully G35 and/or Micro35.

Ryan or I will have to get over there soon to check it out.
all ready done- I checked it out and it looks good. It is GREAT to not have to do everything backwards. With any of the adapters that do not flip the image using the magnet trick works, but everything is still backwards right to left. (Or is that left to right ...) So it takes a little bit to get used to the backwards display.
Quyen's new adapter- Letus35 Flip- takes care of all of this and makes it all a lot easier to use, and the footage is nice as well. I'm not sure about the support system tho - as the adapter is now in an "s" shape (See below) so it "hangs" below the camera some. I did not have my rails on hand, or I couldn't tell you if the rails still fit for added support like we did on set (See Envisions pic of my camera above).

Mike, I sent you a PM last night/early this AM. I've got Jarred's blessing to do a review/article with a 35 Shoot out. He's even apparently paved the road ahead of me letting the other companies know I'll be contacting them.
Since it appears that the My35 and Letus35 may be the closest competition, or at least of most interest in this thread, I'd like to get the ball rolling with you before contacting the others. Shoot me back a response in the PM of how you'd like to handle this, or if you simply need an address to ship a unit to.
As soon as I hear from you, I'll contact the others in the lower price market as well (Micro35, G35, etc.). As we're in the middle of post for our Sci-Fi short, we'll likely not be able to start anything for about 2 weeks, but would take an entire day to compare all the models with the same shots, lighting, lens, etc. & get an article up within a week or two after that.

Yep, we'll do it right, that's for sure! It should be fun and interesting to compare them.
Matthew Bennett
12-30-2005, 09:35 PM
If you really want to do a proper compare you'll need the (a)letus (all types), (b)my35, (c) sg35 (the english guy), (d)the cinemek or guerilla 35 (production model), (e) the redrock, (f) the indie35, (g)all the p+s technik models (there are a million variations of this) and (h) all the others (there a probably at least ten I haven't heard of)
Good luck getting d,e,f,and the g's for free or even getting to see d in the next six months. But, if you do, score, man!
Let's not short-sell the difficulty of this idea - this is a quest of grail-like proportions. It is quite possible that it would never actually be accomplished -
Good Luck to you sir!

Our interest is in reviewing at least three models. If there are more that can be compared, great. When most companies pay to have their models reviewed, tested, etc. to think that anyone would charge for it would automatically put them out of the consideration & article ... so I don't believe that will be a concern.
Reveiwing the P+S would be a huge waste of time for two major reasons: 1) Jarred's already done an in-depth article on it. 2) It's no where near the same league as the others. Since it's out of most user's budget, there's be no real benefit to do a side-by-side comparison, unless it was to try and show how the other adapters are NEARLY as good for 1/10th the price ... something I don't think P+S would be interested in supporting.
I've already contacted all of the above makers, with the exception of the P+S, via PM (members of DVXuser) or e-mail. Have already heard back from two who are interested & willing to participate. We own the Letus35, and if Quyen would like his Flip model reviewed he's in the same town, so it'd be easy to do.

As of right now Norm and I are planning on not doing the p+s technic for two reasons, one- it is out of most of our price ranges, and two- Jarred has already done a great job on a review.
We will be able to get the Letus35, My35, and Norm is working on the redrock and g35. I'm not sure I've heard of or seen the indie35 or sg35. I'll look into those ...

The "Indie 35" is here:
http://indie35.com/
The cinemek guys are slagging it a lot over at their forum.. I haven't looked at the site much but it seems to be a developed product. I think it should be included in any worthwhile article.
You can just search DVXuser for the sg35 - it's some english guy whose making it.. it's a spinning adapter I think. he sells them for like 400 shillings or silver coins or something English like that.
But those are two definite players in the low budget adapter wars..

Here's some stuff about the "SG35" by Wayne Kinney
Sorry, I just cutnpaste this>>>>
Sorry guys, but I've been very busy with work(the one that pay the bills). any way let tell you what's happening.
my 35 mm adapter is the only DIY adapter that doesn't have the image up side down, I did some test footage and realised that there was a problem. The bright part of the images are distorted(kind of rainbow effect) and also I was loosing quite a bit of light. So the result is it works but it's not good enough so I decided to let others do the job and concentrate on my own stuff.. I'm going to purchase the SG35 this week end it's a very good 35mm adapter equivalent to the micro35 but much cheaper. £200 $350. it's sold with everything I need and the rod system.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wayne.kinney/sg35.htm
the image will be upside down but I'm gonna get an lcd monitor where I can reverse the image.
Wayne Kinney, the guy that build the SG35 ship everywhere in the world and I think there is 2 to 3 weeks waiting between payment and delivery.
he can be contacted at: waynekinney@hotmail.com
This week end we are going to shoot few things in brighton (south england) and we will post footage of the FX1E with the SG35...
>>>> Again, Kinney does seem to be a prominent player in the low budgie adapter market.

Oh yeah, that's just nothing but sex appeal right there. Actually, I've seen it before ... in the BTS for the film it was used in ... So far we've got the following on board to participate:
My35
Letus35
SG35
Still waiting to hear back from G35, Indie35, and Micro35. With even just the three that have responded already, we'll be able to do this by the end of January (allowing everyone manufacturing/shipping time, etc.).
I'd contacted the MPIC (DVXuser: Dan), not realizing that it was well out of the $1K market, coming in at $8K in price. Needless to say, we won't be comparing it to the others, as it's more in the class/price of the Mini35.

Wow, I'm really impressed and am extremely intereseted in purchasing one of these. I just have a few questions concerning the my35.
1) What is the functionality of the original DVX lens once the my35 adapter is atached? Is there still zoom and marco functionality?
2) Can the lenses with the my35 be interchanged, for instance, if I have a telephoto lens and want to use it, can I?
3) This one is for spider, could you re-post the sample video shots you've done so far? I've tried to dowload your original examples but all the links are expired.
4) Finally, what's the learning curve for the my35?
thanks guys!
~lee
Norm Sanders
01-04-2006, 11:33 AM
1. You can still zoom/macro, but you won't want to. Personally, once I've got my zoom/focus set on the GG, I use Gaffer Tape to secure everything in place ... that way I don't accidentally go slightly out of focus on the GG while filming.
2. Yes, like any other 35 Adapter ... just have to make sure it's the same family of lens that the mount is designed for. Remember, the stronger telephoto lens, the more glass it'll have which means increased light loss. Or, you'll pay through the nose for a FAST telephoto lens.
4. Shouldn't be any different than any other 35 Adapter. The real curve is getting used to pulling a SHARP focus with the manual camera lens at the end & perhaps getting used to backwards/upside down images for framing, etc.

Even though this started in the DIY thread, I'm not sure that Mike's in the market anymore to share all the specs, but I could be wrong. He's had more than enough interest from members wanting to pay for his time/product, and everyone DOES need to make a living.
I'd go back through this thread from the beginning to see if they're listed out. If not, don't be surprised if they don't get listed now ... from a business standpoint. No different than Redrock Micro or others not really eager to list all their parts/places they buy from.

I'm especially looking forward to the shoot out, because at least with the version of Letus35 we used today, I'm seeing quite a bit of noise/stuff on the screen ... mostly where it's exceptionally bright/blown out due to filming interior of a car, with the blown out parts being through the car windows, etc.
We'll see if the manufacturer of the Letus35 wants to loan the newer version for the shoot-out, other wise it'll be the model we're using now that'll be used.

he means that he needs the new link because since the server switch from v3 to v6 makes the old links(v3), dead links. right stephenbuck?

Right, the link to the person you suggested we buy adapters from is to a V3 thread and doesn't work on V6. Even a few keywords or a username to help me trackdown the thread would be a help. Thanks!

Look for Go35pro or Go35
Or bklyndv
He's the guy that's making it.

actually, mike dawson has his own adapter which is called the my35 not the go35 which is made by bklyndv.
Mikes "my35" arrived, and i did some modifications to use it with canon fd lenses, and i had success.
Pictures soon, but i can say something for shore, this adapter rocks!

One question for your Mike. The extension tube that you used to get the lens mount off of. It seems like the threads are 52mm, is that correct?

hey guys what kind of magnet is it on the anormous apparatus website and is it possible to use it with the 100b, because I got some magnets here and it's not flippin' anything
make sure the magnet is in the right place (just below the hinge on the bottom side) and make sure the magnet is strong.

....and try flipping/rotating the magnet itself. you have to find the sweet spot.
