I just finished Beta Testing for bugs (hence the release) and its a frickin' cool set.
I didn't have a chance to see some of these films in the contest and WOW! Some good stuff.
Also I'm going to be PMing people for like a week now asking how this or that was done - a lot of which is covered in the BTS stuff, but there's still more I want to know from some.
And there's just so much technically you can learn -- "why is that film so noisy, why is that one so clean, how the hell did they get such blue skies and properly expose for the actors..." etc. And as for 16X9 uprezz, blowup, squeeze, anamorphic concerns / debate --- well in the 1, 2, 3 place films you can see 3 different ways to get it and compare the resolution / look. A) Texas Fortune letter boxed and then I think Jarred just blew it up in his NLE B) Shed was shot with the Anamorphic Adaptor and C) Shot in the Dark was uprezzed using photozoom pro (right guys) -- If anyone shot squeeze (anyone?) then you could really do some comparison contrast. I only have a standard def TV at home so I think I'm going to loiter in Best Buy and see if all the headaches of the Anamorphic were worth it or not. There's just a tone of stuff like that, and some people did some tweaking and stuff post contest -- really implemented people's notes and their films really made some jumps forward.
Plus there's a preview of the HVX on it -- and some of that footage is HVX right Jarred?
It was just a really cool 2 days getting through all 4 disks! :thumbs up:

Holy smokes! Just watched some of the new dvd box set and the presentation is awesome. I'm watching the shorts on my 42" wide screen HD LCD projection and each of the films really comes off well on the bigger screen (I was a little worried about that - apparently with no need). Loved the extras I've seen (starting to watch in order). Also thought the very slick Panny HVX200 "extra" was informative (OK - so I skipped to the last disc for that one).
Congrats to Jarred and the gang on a job well done - and I look forward to buying the Sci-Fi box set in a few months time.

One Place I have'nt been yet is Louisiana .Would be great for a bike trip and I'll bring the DVX along.
just hate taking the car on those trips , just so many nice back roads .
If the offer is still open for next summer Jack I'll plan on a tour and some Crawdads .
We filmed last night until 1 am .We had many hiccups doing our first night scene .
Sunday was a MAJOR hiccup as my buddy's wife had a nasty reaction to him being out until 1 am .
SOOO Sunday was a no go for him ..
In a panic I phoned the Ex girlfriend and asked to use her property for some shots and when I got there she wanted to help ...What a life saver she was ...
See it does pay to be nice to old girlfriends .
Hope everyone else projects are going good .

Ohhh ... your friend's GF was ticked cuz you were filming at there place until 1:00 AM -- that's a little more reasonable -- I thought on first read that she was just ticked cuz the dood was out til 1:00am. That would suck.
I have to get out of the house to write sometimes - especially if I'm under a deadling - and that means I may leave the house at 11PM and stay out til 4:00 AM writing in bars and stuff and the GF totally gets that. Probably wouldn't work out so well for us otherwise

Once we sell out the first run of 100,000 sets, you're out of luck and will just have to wait until we release The Zombiefest Platinum Edition. It'll be 49.95, but you do get the zombie action figure and The Shed music video---a potent mix of zydeco and zombies. :)

Thanks for reminding me Barry -- Jarred wanted me to pos this teaser pf the Shed music video from the $49.95 Platinum edition:

I think "a potent mix of zydeco and zombies" describes it pretty well. I worked really hard on it and I think it shows a lot of growth as a filmmaker even in the short time since Shed. I can safely say I've never been more proud of anything I've done.

Yes he's in the Submerged Actors Guild.
But if you write letter 30 days before your shoot detailing your budget, then thow the letter (inside a bottle) into the body of water that represensts aquatic actors in your region, you can get a waiver.

I watched a few of them today and they look great on TV. I think I would have rated some of them higher if it werent for the ugly compression. I was surprised to see alot of noise during the TV scene on texas fortune. I think the best behind the scenes was jdanstan's. Most informative and interesting.
Some of them look really well shot and the web versions dont do them justice.

My thoughts exactly. I was surprised at how good most of the films looked (and sounded) on DVD because I was sort of expecting to see a lot more flaws exposed in the bigger format. It reminds me of just how poor an experience it is watching films on the web.

yeah and you can compare the main ways of getting real 16X9 out of the DVX for final resolution too.
Anamorphic Adpator
Blow up in NLE (comparable to squeeze and letter box)
Uprezz in Photo Zoom pro
I only have a 4:3 20" though so I need to go loiter in the Cinema Room at best Buy and see if they will let me compare.
I actually did take my test copy to Target to try it there but they had one DVD player running to all of the TV's and I was too embarassed to put it on

Be sure to watch some entries with people who have no clue about video production. My mom stopped by today and she hasn't seen any of this stuff... not even any of my own flick. I was pissing my pants laughing at how scared and grossed out she was. The visit ended with me getting a lecture on what's wrong with kids today and "that's why people don't feel any sympathy anymore".
She was litterally SCREAMING and throwing her hands in her face with the same intensity as somebody who was just sprayed with mace. Hmm... the SFX were even better then I thought.
Apparently the neck-slashes and rotting arms are just too much for some people. Vicariously watching through my mother really made me appreciate the good job you guys did with the scoring too. When you see someone get totally FREAKED OUT on the same thing you've watched a hundred times you really notice the musical crescendos and acting that sell the scene.

Disjecta, what great scenary shots. and getting the whole family on the project, that's kool! now i'm forgetting the first one, but the actors were great in it. Hudson's action was the best. i couldn't play it on the TV, so the sounds on the computer were ok but if i can figure out the TV? i'm still watching the rest.

hey thanks!
yes there are cool stuff in all of them -- I think I am gunning for Hudson this time for Sci Fi in terms of action   -- not sure yet, still toying with ideas, but I'm sort of like -- Ok I need some action like Hudson, some camera movement like NBCshooter, more attention to my opening credits like Texas Fortune, character work like Last Supper, a dash of Paprika, a little lemon ... etc.
But there are several films like that kind of set a standard
EDIT: you can't get it to play on the DVD hooked to your TV? What do you mean -- not at all? Or in wrong aspect ratio? do oyu have a really old DVD player? (I can't help but imagine you right now in that trailer from Last Supper, lol)

I MUST crosspost this!!! HOLY POO POO!!! I just saw my BTS on the DVD and it's 4:3 STRETCHED!!! I shot the BTS 4:3 and since it's stretched on the DVD I LOOK REAL FAT! I'M NOT THAT FAT, GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way, jdanstan . . . GREAT BTS!!! I loved your lighting tutorial--EXCELLENT! You not only had a GREAT short, but a really, really GREAT cine-esque look! Exceptional BTS . . . I learned a lot from it!!!
Anyway, aside from me looking super fat, Jarred did a great job on the DVDs 'cause I know that must of been a TON of work to get that together . . . I can't believe the value! All those DVDs for only $20! Really appreciate all the labor of love that went into the contest and the DVD (not to mention the coolest T-shirt ever). THANKS JARRED!

ha ha.. i told everyone somewhere that if you gave me 4:3 shit it would get stretched.. 4:3 was a no-no.
But it was good stuff NBCShooter... all the BTS stuff was way way better than i thought it would be.
Good work everyone!
P.S.. If you wanna send me a 16:9 version do it soon.. as soon as 50 more 4 pack DVD's sell im repackaging them into a single dual layer disk, top 20 films I think with extras.. the 4 disc set is just way to much work.

I'm going to buy some battery fluorrescents to mimick your on camera set up from your BTS here in about 15 minutes actually. No way, YOURS looks great. I learned quite a bit from your BTS. That whole "-12 pedastal" thing was a revelation to me! Plus that Home Depot-light-on-a-real-lightstand trick--AWESOME! I've got to figure that one out. It looks like you used a photostrobe lightstand adapter somehow. How exactly did the Home Depot light fit in the adapter?
Anyway, be careful, those battery flourescents go REAL green-blue. The daylight-ish Ott-Light desk lamps balance at about 4300K (I think) and white balance EXCELLENT. Those are what I used to light all my interiors. I also found some "daylight" flourescent bulbs at a "Do-It Center" in Burbank, but I'm not sure if they're a national chain or not since that's the only one I know of. So far, I haven't found any brand (most are Chinese knock-offs) of battery powered flourescents with a decent spectrum. The cheaper lights always go very green.

I discovered this forum a little too late to enter Zombiefest, but I did order the DVD and have watched every minute of the set. I know that no one here knows me and that my opinions do not carry very much weight (yet:thumbsup: ) but I have been reading the boards religiously since discovering it. Always a great time, and I'm always learning here at Jarred's little film school. Great job on the flix, everyone. My eight year old son watched the ones I let him watch, but now he watches no longer because, "Dad, last night I had ten nightmares."
I'm looking forward to Sci-fi fest and I will probably be contributing in that one.

Great find. I just read through that thread and it's brilliant. I like how they are wondering if they should buy the DVD because it wasn't a business account. I think it is great that Jarred is getting some orders outside of just the board members. I can only imagine what all that bandwith cost him not to mention all the time I know he invested on the DVD so I hope that something happens and he can sell the hell out of that DVD.
That was a brilliant find though, good job.
EDIT:
LOL
I just saw that Hudson posted on that thread saying how it was legit. That is awesome, plus he has under 2 dozen posts on there rather than the 13,000 he has on here. He's considered a 'Zombie Grunt'. That was worth it!

this time around I think only the top 10 or 20 will be on the DVD -- it was just too time consuming and costly for Jarred to put all or nearly all of the films on a DVD. In fact the Zombiefest 50 film set is only available for a limited time for that reason. Soon it will be just the first 10 or 20 or something like that.

but you'd have to send me a self addressed stamped envelope to send it to you because I am an irresponsible lazy procrastinating bastard and I will never get around to it otherwise.
but if I get your envelope it'll make me do it and mail it.

Don't count on it....I'm a (as you said above) too and it still means ripping the DVD, putting it in the SASE and then putting it in the outgoing mail. That's a lot of steps for a procastinator.

Are any of the Zombie Fest still posted anywhere for viewing? I saw the one with Kimko (The Last Supper, I believe) posted on Rikki Rockett's website. It was good.

Oh, yeah. That definitely rocked!
In the past I have HATED zombie pictures...Night of the Living Dead et. al. But so far I've seen Texas Fortune, The Shed, No Such Thing, The Last Supper and Shot in the Dark. They were all good. I could see The Shed and Texas Fortune both as features with a some hard work on expanding the idea. Jack Daniel Stanley...two for two. I guess the pressure is on for Hero Fest. I definitely would have preferred some other topic for the next fest...something that would make me want to join in... but if what I've seen from the last two fests is any indication, I may very well have to rethink my distaste for Super Hero movies.

yeah more so with texas fortune, although both are vignettes from what could be larger stories -- the group on the run from zombies that ecnounters the false hero in Texas fortune and then they have to team up cuz he knows how to kill the zombies even though they don't trust him.
Shed could happen in almost any Zombie movie, and as such is less an idea to hang a movie on I think.
Jack Daniel Stanley...two for two. I guess the pressure is on for Hero Fest. Yeah it was already on. But i won't be satisfied until I have numero uno.

yeah that was my initial response, but hero is actually the broadest of the genres so far, especially if you look at it from a more literary standpoint -- someone has to do something heroic, or it has to deal with the theme of heroism, not necesserily have a protagonist that has a secret identity and a costume.
Texas Fortune would do well in either Hero or Zombie.
I wanna do something like a History of Violence. Or maybe Donnie Darko. But something really real. Only problem is, now that I've moved to New York, I have a friend that's a professional stunt man with all the gear we need to do wire work, plus he also owns a company that supplies cars for movies, also he works with an acrobat that can do a sideways flip over a car from standing still ... so its gonna be hard to not go broad with it, though maybe I can incorporate those elements in something more real ... like Unbreakable, but better.

I enjoy your style, Jack, so I'm sure you're going to do something great. Right now, I'm finishing a feature we shot in August...hopefully, it will be done in two weeks and then it's time to find some distribution. This is going to be a time consuming endeavor, I'm sure.
(Shameless plug: If you have taken a look at the trailer it can be found here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=48426 . We tried to incorporate some campy humor along with some decent horror action. We didn't really want to go the t&a gore fest route.)
I like how you tell a story and I can't wait to see what you come up with. I loved A History of Violence. I took my daughter to a screening with a Q&A session with the screenwriter afterward. We BOTH love it. Unbreakable was good, too. As was Batman Begins. But that's it for me. Hated the whole Superman thing...Darkman...Batman (except Batman Begins)...Spiderman (although 2 was watchable)...The Green whatever...and so on and so forth...

Is there anyway to get a DVD now that they're sold out? Sorry if I missed it, reading through 21 pages looked awfully daunting...

OK I just heard from Jarred on this. Someone actually sent me a SASE so I thought I'd double check and well to put it LIGHTLY ...
He doesn't want us doing this. Thought you should know, since I was solicited privately by someone to copy mine before I ever mentioned it here, so sure others that own this may be getting hit up also.

Jack, I say we team up and make a film about a cowboy grifter trapped in a shed. Kind of like 12 Angry Men, but with more syringes.

There's some demand out there but who knows if its enough to cover his costs or not.
I have asked about this and unless he surprises us with a new answer, the answer is that there are NO firm plans for a re-release right now.
I am trying to get him to do a year end best of DVD and pull out all the stops though.

for sale now is the Sci Fest DVD, the Zombie Fest DVD is caput. In the Next 2 - 4 months the Hero Fest DVD will be out. Some flicks from the Zombie DVD will be on a BEST of DVD that will have selected flicks from Zombie, Sci Fi, and Hero ... and maybe Horrorfest but I think that would be on the next best of -- 06/07 vs Best of for 05/06 ... but that's just a guess.
You can also go to the Zombie Fest 2005 winners thread in the Zombie Fest Subforum and see the top three films on the DVD for free.

These are replicated from a glass master? Where are you getting this done Jarred? Are you getting a special deal because you are the man, or would an average Joe might expect to pay a similar price for replication. That is a good price on the dvd's you are charging. Has that always been the price?
Jason
EDIT: I am speaking of the scifi dvd link by the way
