All this discussion on here made me want to give it a try. Here is a picture I grabbed off the internet real quick and changed it around a little bit. There is still some smears around and his forehead doesnt look right, but overall it came out better than I expected. Let me know what you think.
Its really hard to play with the face and get the light and shadows to look good.

Nice job on the forehead and hair. I've tryed this before. It's difficult. I don't think he would like the new nose though.

Nice job. The Dodge and Burn tool can be your great friend for highlights and shadows, as well as seperating the face into sections and using blending modes to even things out. There is a small degree of tiling in his hair, but that looks more like .jpg artifacts.
His head could be just a little bit rounder, but in all, it's a very good job. If you sectioned his head into different layers and used circular marquees to form a boundry for your healing brush and clone tool, you could not only round off the edges, but blend them in with a feather.
Cool job, especially since you can't actually SEE the top of his head.

thanks for the comments. I think the only thing I used was the clone stamp. I havent messed with the dodge and burn. I might have to try that later. Most of the stuff you just said went right over my head. I agree about his head being rounder. I had a hard time leveling out his head where I wanted it. It started out being bigger. I might go back and fix that. I might try to mess around with the healing brush. I havent done used that one yet. so many things to learn. thanks

Your welcome.
An easy trick you might try is to find another photo of someone with the same angle towards the camera who is not wearing a hat, and has the same general build. THen, put that person's head on a layer above the one you are working on, scale it to match, take the opacity way down (like the onion skin function on many apps) and use it for a reference. You would be suprised at how easily, successfully and believably you can rebuild people by using other photos to help with dimension.
Didn't mean to go "over your head", and I can garauntee that it is not as over your head as you think. When you are rebuilding or retouching a photo, it is often very helpfull to have the portions you want to work on on seperate layers. It also helps (especially when using the healing brush and clone stamp) to have an area selected with the Lasso or Circular Marquee and work inside it. You can't paint out of any borders that way.

Yeah, well there was another thread that Rapier started asking about a Photoshop contest, and I said I was in. Screw that, if you guys are entering! I wouldn't have a prayer! :cheesy:
I was really quite impressed with both of these. I mean, I can repair damaged photos "pretty well", but I'm not at the level you guys are to recreate stuff that's not even there.
A lot of the stuff Rapier said went over my head as well. I don't even know what a healing brush is.

Thanks for the tips rapier. Im going to try messing around with the healing brush to see how it works. Thanks also for the lasso tip. I didnt know what that thing was good for.
Envision- I only used the clone stamp for the one above. His hair is actually his jacket. Dont be afraid to enter the contest. It sounds like it should be fun and we can at least learn from eachother.

Impressive, Pookie, except that the Storm Trooper's arm shouldn't be in front of the GI that's closer to us, IMO.
