Whats the deal with the Step Backwards option (CTRL + Z in Windows) ?

It only goes back so far. Why can't I go back to the 2nd thing I did and change it?

Lame.

You mean undo? Your best bet is to use the history pallete, you can jump back as many steps as your ram will store in that.

John, there are two different commands, Undo and Step Backwards.

Are you sure you're not just hitting Undo?
The undo function is weird in PS. If you use it, then technically the last thing you did was hit 'Undo' ...so if you hit Undo again, guess what? It will undo your last 'Undo'

Whew.

"Step Backwards" should do exactly what it sounds like, and should be able to take you back to the 2nd thing you did no problem. You may want to check your preferences to see how many levels of undo you have selected.
But, Kai's right, the history pallette is a great tool to use.

The shortcut in photoshop to step backwards is Ctrl+Alt+Z. It might take some getting used to, or you could use a 5 button mouse, and set the side keys to step forward and backward. I use the left side mouse button to step backwards, and the right side mouse button to step forward, it's very nice to have.
