Well here we are at November 1st. So where is everyone on sci-fest?
Got your script started? Script done? Started pre-production? Got actors lined up and production dates firmly scheduled? In Production? Production Complete? Doing your final tweaks to the audio?
For me, I am still thinking about a story line, have not yet committed a single line to paper... Gotta get out of low-gear.

Treatment 90% there. Actually for shorts lately I have fallen into a new process where I write a treatment (more detailed than normal) which is formatted using bullets - then I go straight to shooting script.
Unconventional as all hell, I know...but it really freaking works for me.

I got my script written, have four of the five roles cast, meeting with two actresses for the other role this weekend. Two costumes have been purchased, one is being made, and the music is already being worked on. The biggest problem I have right now is the set design for one of my scenes. Everywhere I turn I am getting a big fat rejection (seems like favors burn up quick when you give nothing in return).
If everything goes well, we'll be shooting over two or three days a week after thanksgiving. I want to give myself as much time as possible to work on color correction and ADR if needed so things don't end up like they did with my zombie project. Goal: December 25th submission... odds of that happening, dunno yet.

We're already 2/3 through principle filming, and expect to have ours in the can within the next two weeks.
Yeah right.
JUST finally decided on our story/script, that we had a writer create for us on spec. Now we've got to polish it & make it exactly what we want, then begin working out our location & scheduling ... THEN cast it based performance/audition first, then on who can commit to the schedule.

Oh! Oh! I know! How about this... global warming has caused the polar ice caps to begin to melt at a rapid rate, they melt into the Atlantic causing the water to warm up which changes the surrounding climate. Then it creates these storms where the center is so supercooled that anything caught in the eye of the storm freezes solid within seconds. Then there is this giant tidal wave that crashes into New York City and then one of the big oil tankers cruises down the streets of New York, riding the currents from the tidal wave. Then everything freezes over and the scientist who predicted the storm has to walk across three states in the freezing storm to rescue his son.
Oh wait, maybe that's already been done. Sorry, ignore that one!

I'm excited! I'm motivated! I'm ready! I... have NO clue what to do. Plenty of great visuals floating through my head, but nothing tying them together yet. Gotta grab a pen and paper and go sit under a tree for a few hours. I'll at least get a good nap out of that!
Even if I have to shoot a snail crawling over a twig, I'll do it and call it existentialist sci-fi.

How about a 6 minute remake of a movie we all know and love?
If they (Hollywood) can remake The Longest Yard, etc, etc (too tired to think of them) then certainly I can remake a sci-fi for this contest. Or will that be shat upon with anger?

Finished a re-write. Dumbed it down. A lot.
Now concerned about casting the EIGHT speaking parts (AK!), but figure I can get that done in the next two weeks or so.
Finally, I just need to find a working space vehicle for the big opening shot (but after having watched Star Wars Episode III for the first time last night, I kinda got excited because apparently you can't be sent to prison for making a reeeeally bad sci-fi film).

AR you kidding? Ever read "Against the Fall of Night?" It is the definition of a teenage sci-fi, even though there is only one teen in it. There is just so much potential in sci-fi for future worlds without adults, genetic viruses that make you die at 20, teenage armies battling for control of the world, spaceship "coming of age" flick, 12 horny teens and a robot, how much help do you need? :)

lol, yea there's a lot of possibilities, it's just most of the stories i was coming up with, and the basic direction i was going, kids wouldn't really fit, or i'd need at least one adult. but i dunno, 12 horny teens and a robot, that has potential.
i think it's time to rethink my direction of thought.

We're working on the third draft of the script and I'll probably start working on the first production breakdown over the weekend. While the shoot in terms of locations and actors is pretty straightforward, we're dealing with some complex practical effects that are going to take some very careful planning. Hopefully we'll be rolling in early January.

But it'll be longer, anyway. Pretty sure. I think.
But it's all dependent on whether I can get the shot I want. If I can't, then there's no sense in making it at all.
But if I don't make it, what'll I do with the soundtrack music I've already done? Damn. If I don't use it, my wife will kill me. She's been listening to the same few bars over and over and over and over and over for a week now.

Script is completely locked down. All but two very small roles are cast. Actors are working on their lines. Storyboards are so very close to being done. Hired a Set Designer yesterday and secured locations for the sets to be built. Will shoot on Dec. 15th, 16th, and 17th. Most test shots worked out OK. I've done some storyboards. I've got my shot list nailed down completely. I've built a piece of equipment to do a shot I want. I've got my actors, I have a guy doing lighting for me, and I have a guy doing the camera work.
I've drawn up character designs for how I want everyone to look, and my makeup artist has made the first mockup of a mask for me at 1/3 scale.

I've done all the costumes except for my female lead. I just dunno what I wanna do with her. I drew them out first pretty extensively. I'm going with the KISS theory, keep it simple stupid. George lucas said thats what he did with his outfits and if you look they really are very simple in the first star wars movies.

November 23 Update:
The script is done (had to dumb it down quite a bit for anyone but my dog to understand it).
We shot our first exterior night scene last night and it looks great (aside from almost losing the best shots because my DP showed up without any tape - can you imagine?)
Now re-working the script a little to fit the 6 minute max. Cut cut cut.
Hope to shoot the final exterior and interior December 7 to 10 (or so) to allow lots of time for editing and post.
On track. On budget.
Life is good.
Right now I'm trying to decide between the two scripts (the third got canned for being impossibly too long - 10 mins). Hopefully shooting will begin in mid December, maybe inching into the christmas holiday, giving me the month of January for editing and post-work. Ya, I'm gonna do some CG work, contrary to my original intention. But, both scripts demand minor "atmospheric modifications". I refused to call them special effects. You can't make me call them special effects. They're "digitally created cinematic assistants".

I should be finishing up my script this holiday weekend and then I'll find a couple of actors. Augh, we're cutting it closer than I wanted. After firing the writer we were working with, I had to start over with a new idea from scratch. Just finished another rewrite today for our 6 minute version, then once that's approved, I'll flesh it out further for a 10-15 minute version. We'll edit that to have something for the library/other festivals (hopefully), then cut that down even more based on our 6 minute script for DVXuser.
The hardest thing about all this is trying to work around the holidays, especially since we won't be able to start shooting until into December.

Curses! Apparently, Time > Money.
I'm slammed at work, and may not be able to pull together a short for this fest, much as I'd like to. SciFi is one of my favorite genres!
But I'm working for a startup and we've got no project slipage through March 24th.
We'll see; I might be able to throw something together starting Jan 1, but at this point I just don't see it happening. Drat!

thought of a way better idea, plus it'll work better with people/places i have available. so while i'm away for thanksgiving til sunday i'm gonna try to finish a script so i can line stuff up when i get back.
i'm at the coast, sapping wifi from a lodge across the street from the cabin we're at, lol

Wow, what a grueling process this has been. After tons of consultations, feedback, and too many drafts/rewrites to keep track, we've finally got our script to shoot.
Let me know what you all think. If I get a high enough bidder, I may just sell the rights to it, and come up with a different idea for the fest!

I know you'll all be insanely jealous of the character arcs, dialogue, and action we're able to squeeze in LESS than 6 minutes.

On a little more serious note, waltind has mutually approved the latest draft I wrote (no, NOT the above theme, title, script, etc. ... though I'll STILL let someone buy it if they want  ), and we've rec'd multiple talent/crew interests through a couple Craig's List postings.
Auditions for roles will be this Wednesday evening, with all shooting to occur Fri-Sun, December 9-11. This will give us a TON of time with post production, which will be nice ... just some major crunch time in between now & shooting as we've got to secure a couple locations & plan everything out.
It's going to be exciting!

Well normally you would be DQ'ed for showing us the script in advance but I think this is a heartbreaking work of staggering genius and trancends any mere contest rules.
What can I say. I was competely glued to the page for the entire read -- inspiring!

Jack, I KNEW you of all people would be in awe of the written words that grace that page.
Thanks. I know for most they'd be DQ'd, but I actually expect a bidding war. But I'll be modest ... let's start it at say just a mere $50? I accept PayPal.

Sorry can't do that
I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I paid that little for it
two I can't afford to pay you the millions of dollars that script is worth
I'd just ve to intimidated to tackle such a masterpiece - granted it's almost director proof due to its genius - but if the final film fell short, I wouldn't be able to handle having stifled such a beautiful and powerful work, which under more capable hands could touch the hearts of so many and inspire mankind to better the world

no that's just a weird speach impedement I have -- no really - I mean it!
Man, I really need to go back and read this whole thread. My cursory glance really isn't giving me any info on how you guys are doing.
I hope all is well.

I can't believe it, but I think I actually have a script. Won't see it until Monday. Don't know what the hell I'm going to shoot this on. I guess the HVX200 if I can get one in time.

Nov. 27. Sets are being built, but the size of the sets and the size of my imagination are coming into conflict. Doing some test shots within the next couple of days to see if I can fake the scale or help it out digitally. I'm confident that it will work out.
Costumes are almost done, and still my largest point of worry. I'm either going to sink or swim depending on if this idea works or not. Unfortunatly I don't have the time or the budget to fix this if I'm wrong. Leap of faith.
Score is in the prelim stages of coming together. The majority of this will happen in post, but I wanted there to be a ground work this early in the game for time / creative reasons.
Still on target for shooting Dec 15, 16, and 17.

Our guy is already doing some pre-score work based off the script, which actually makes me nervous. How we shoot this (angles, the way actors convey the characters/dialogue, etc.) could be WAY different than the person's seeing the script in their head. I'd rather the person hold off until we have the rough cut together around Christmas time.

I don't know ... as long as he's just thinking thematically and not too temporally -- in otherwords if you and he are communicating well - might be good to give him some visual research - then experimenting with and developing some themes and movements might not be a bad idea -- as long as he knows that he's not making anything finished as it will have to cut or change with those cool swishpans etc that you have planned or swell as you reveal the alien, etc. -- otherwise what's the point of working with a real composer -- but you can take some of his work and actually use it to edit to, which would seem like a plus, then let him score for real.
... maybe ...

Oppressor, that's an insanely cool looking banner, but I'd size it down to the 569x70 maximum (same size as Hudsons, mine, Limehouses - see above - , etc.) before it gets removed for you (yeah, the Mods do that, trust me). :)
Are those CGI models you created yourself? Way cool. Looking forward to your film, for sure!

Thanks Norm. That one is exactly the same size as the last one. I used it as a template. For some reason it looks alot bigger than the last but tis the same. I guess its all the big muscles making it look bigger than normal. No those are not my models this time. I just grabbed them from some gallery and worked them over a little.

 What I do? The banner looks wicked cool all cropped down like that! Now just got to shorten it too! Oh, THAT's probably what you're talking about right? Oops. Sorry!

We just secured our final locations yesterday for our shoot next weekend. I wish we had a need for a major set, or the budget for it, because the warehouse I got for us is 5,500 square feet with 30-40 foot tall ceilings!
Also got a great coffee shop that's really nice & mimics the Starbucks look. Lastly, shooting at my house, but hoping to find another home that doesn't have to deal with three kids running around (easier to shoot elsewhere than to get all my little ones out of the house).
Things are getting exciting!

:) Yeah man, all in fun. I have to be a little renegade with the length at least. Its the Brooklyn way. I even cut the edges to make up for the bandwidth. ;)
