At the current pace of adoption, UHDTV would become relevant sometime around 2043. (the Japanese started working on high-def in 1968, or almost 40 years ago).

Considering that the current SD TV standard (in the US, NTSC) was established in 1954 and will be in use for quit some time to come, I would not be saving up for UHD just yet. Now the advancement in High resolution cameras to replace motion picture cameras, ala, Genesis or Kinetta, might come upon us pretty soon. We can only hope.

There comes a point of diminishing returns, also. There's only so much definition the human eye is capable of resolving.

According to the EBU, HD shows no advantage over SD on TVs under 28". I guess that UHD would make liitle odds until about 50" at normal viewing distances.

I don't think that's true.

On my 17" laptop monitor, I can *easily* tell the difference between 800x600 and 1280x720 from across the room, and 800x600 is higher than the 640x480 of an SD TV (thus, less of a difference to tell than HD vs. SD).

I've also seen 6" HD production monitors which were stunning.

You've probably got good eyes. :) It is just what I read in an EBU report. It is hard to test in the UK because there are no HD broadcasts. I'll try it for myself with a HD stream and my projector.

I got the plasma and home theater a few days ago...had to like redo the whole freakin house..my parents forced me to help..cuz everything was so freaking big..ne ways.....comparing SD to HD....there is no comparison...HD is the clear winner..I watched HBO's Rome on there....omggg amazzzing..then i flicked it on a SD tv..and it wasnt nearly as good..then i tried the SD on the plasma..it was still good..but...not clear as HD

UHDTV...thats kinda ridiculous.....HD is maddd clear....well...UHD might actually be better....or it could jus be a gimmick or suttin...but i dont get it.....how much freaking resolution do you need?!?!
As if HD isn't enough...by 2043...all the networks in the world are prolly JUST going be all HD.

oh btw..i found an article
