The reason I was asking is cause' I was looking at Canon's PowerShot S80. This camera has a 1/1.8" CCD and it can shoot videos in 1024x768 at 15fps. And I'm thinking, with a little tweaking and upgrading it should seem like these chips would be capable of delivering full-quality video.
Why didn't they use three of these in the XL H1?

15fps wouldnt look to good, very homemade even if it is technically 720p. Good lucking trying to up that frame rate.

Canon makes their own CCDs and CMOSs. A nice big CMOS would make more sense...

15fps are even lower would be OK, just use sloooow talent and speed it up in post.
And before you think I'm joking, well someone rang me to ask about doing just this, shooting with a 8M pixel still camera, basically doing stop motion with live talent.

I've seen 15fps. It's good if you like shooting still life and hate camera movement. It's bad if you like motion in your frame.

no, i said an UPGRADED version of the still camera CCD. Emphasis on the UPGRADED. Obviously 15fps isn't going to sell well.
But it seems to me like Canon has the technology, why can't they make a 3 CCD 1/2" 24p HD camcorder using their own chips? Why'd they have to outsource to Sony and end up with *shudders* interlaced faked 24p chips?

Yup, just plug in a couple "upgrades" and it's all set...
Not really. Large CCDs generate a tremendous amount of heat, and the difference between 15fps and 60fps is massive. Add the extra heat factor of shooting video for a much longer time on a camcorder to four times the speed, and a different design necessecitated by a video camera (plus the absurd amounts of extra data to dump) and you see why Canon outsourced to Sony. Canon makes still camera CCDs; Sony makes still CCDs and video CCDs. They're not the same thing and a simple "upgrade" won't get you from one to the other.
