why would I need to tell a story?
When your teacher told you to write a page everyday, did you write about nothing.
Shooting is one thing, but put them together to mean something and you take an extra step ahead.
By the way, those images are fantastic. I went to a film festival last night and the two films I saw were done with the FX1 and they looked pretty crisp on the big screen.

if you got nothing to say i'm not sure why you need a camera... that's what its all about... it's not all about looks

When I was in college I was studying composition and arranging (music) and we were taught the same thing, write EVERY day. The reason for this is first to get in the habit of writing, but more importantly it's to get past the "creative barrier". See most people who start doing a creative endeavor create when "inspired". Well that's fine, but if you wait for inspiration you'll find it doesn't happen all that often. You have to spur it on. And then there are the times when you're being paid to write - at deadline - and you can't wait for inspiration to strike. So you force yourself to create. After a while you get better at doing it. I'm not saying that every days writing is brilliant, it's not, but hey it's a start. Maybe I write two pages of music today and tomorrow I think most of it sucks, but there are two bars that I like. Well, it's a start. Those two bars could be the theme to a new aria. So the point is not really to write everyday, but to create everyday and to use this process as a method of learning.
Now if your a filmmaker, the point is not really to shoot everyday (unless your goal is to be a cameraman) but to create everyday. Even if really compressed, that entails shooting and editing. For film, because of the nature of it, I would probably give myslef weekly goals. I would spend one day in "pre-production" planning what I wanted to do that week based on a lesson I wanted to learn (self-teaching is key). Then I would spend two days shooting and two days editing and one day polishing up. If you do this every week, and I'm talking small stuff - an hour or two a day, by the end of the year you'll be miles ahead of where you are today.

Thank you Matt. I think you got the point across more clearly than I did.

indeed planning a production is something I do weekly, but not every week or day i have things to work with so i film stuff like that just to keep me working.

My point is you don't have to plan a PRODUCTION, you just plan little min productions. So instead of going out and shooting leaves for no purpose, maybe you say that that week you want to work on getting a better handle on an enhancing filter or color grading in post. You create a lesson plan for yourself. Monday you read up on what you want to learn and plan some shots based on what you want to learn, with an eye as to how you'll edit them. Tuesday and Wednesday you go out and shoot your leaves. Thursday you edit it together and Friday you play with color correction and polishing. There you go, you just learned how to do something.
In music there were two groups of people (all of whom were very talented, the non-talented ones had already been weeded out). The first group were people who had to be taught something. The progressed but not very quickly. The second group taught themselves, and used their teachers as a guide to monitor their progress and provide a higher level of insight. They are the folks who really took off. Same would apply here I think...

But what if one likes to go out and shoot leaves for no purpose?

Even in nature films there is a story. It could be anywhere from the effects of the wind to whatever... It's your story.
Keep busy!
Nice pics.
