Is it just me, or did anyone else notice a few instances of possible copyright issues in some of the last contest entries?

I'm particularly referring to the use of stills from famous or not so famous incidents or places.

I'm guilty of having mp3's from various sources in my possession, but I would never use them for more then a temp track.

I read the rules, but how strict are we being in the contest? The fair use issue, like most other laws, is nebulous at best.
I would hate for people to show their cool movies outside of the contest and get into trouble for copyright violations.

I'm not necessarily authorized to speak for the contest, but we've tossed this around before and yes, we're pretty strict about infringing. Nobody wants to see the site get in trouble for allowing infringing works to be posted on it. So please, everyone, make sure you have proper clearances in anything you submit.

Regarding the "royalty free" clip question: it depends on what the specific licensing agreement for that clip states. If it says you're free to use it and distribute it in any way, then of course yes you can use it in your DVXFest movie. If it says that it's for private use only and not for exhibition, then no it wouldn't be allowed.

Are you looking for video or audio?

You can google for royalty free music or check out this thread for methods that lots of us have used in the past to get music: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=38211. Obviously you will see which avenue I am a fan of for the music approach as I am pretty vocal about it. If you are looking for other options on music, go through the zombiefest films and see what films you like and who did the music for them and PM the person whose film it is. Hudson uses a much different approach than I do.

If you are looking for royalty free film clips then the first place I always look was discussed in these threads: http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=26981&page=1&pp=10

If you dp a search though there are tons and tons of gems of advice throughout the documentary section as well as other topics that will help you find what you are looking for.

Finally, there are two threads that I don't feel like looking for (done enough already) that deal with mixing sources. Most archival footage is going to be 30+ years old, so look for threads (especially the Michael Moore Farenheight 9/11 thread) that deals with mixing various sources of footage.

Best of luck and happy shooting
