A friend of mine heard that canon was doing a workflow seminar in Santa Barbara this weekend (22nd). I hope I get a chance to see the xl h1. I have some questions on who can afford to do sdi out and if they can why would they buy a prosumer type camera? This camera has consumer based codec with the ability for professional applications. I'm not sure who this camera is for. It's way to expensive for a tourist and not high enough quality for professionals.

Birns & Sawyer are a great dealer and they're very clued in to the Canon products. If you're in California, stop in and talk to them -- they know what's going on.

Cineform is working to produce an HD-SDI portable recorder that records using the CineForm codec. It should be portable, don't know how affordable, and obviously it won't be lossless recording because it's encoded in CFHD, but still should look very good.

As to who would want the Canon, well, it seems like they're aggressively going after the TV station market, and as such I think they've really hit the nail pretty firmly on the head. If TV stations are looking to go high-def the Canon offers entry into high-def with a lot of the control they've come to expect, but at a price much lower than what they otherwise would have had to pay. I don't think the Canon is aimed at the independent filmmaker or event shooter, since its unique features (HD-SDI, remote computer control, etc) are more particularly aimed at the TV studio type of customer.

I'll have to call Jim at B & S...

He said that they would have the camera on Monday... When I called on Monday they said they didn't know when they're getting it..
