I'M IN BABY!

I'm in on this one. I was just curious after reading the rules. I wrote a concept for a scifi short a couple of years ago and shot a weak teaser trailer (with equally weak green screened stop animation) just as a test. If I used the same concept and shot everything new with my DVX would that be allowed?
It just seems like a slight gray area since the rules only stated the piece had to be made not written or conceived within the contest timeslot. I guess I'm just asking if the teaser/test I made would void my short.

This question was addressed during the zombiefest, and I think that the way the moderators looked at it was that since this was a 'DVX Community' that was what they were going to focus their festivals around.

I just updated my unofficial official list. We're up to 47 people who have said that they're in like a verizon customer. We still got some others who are on the fence.
Wow, 47 people... I'm still saying that this is going to be bigger than the zombie fest.
Norm Sanders
10-26-2005, 09:26 PM
ESPECIALLY since they NEVER had that many people saying in advance that they were doing the zombie thing ... I think they had maybe 30 or so ... then nearly 80 entered.
Keeping the same ratio, and assuming the same thing happened here, it would mean 125 films entering. I've already been figuring anywhere between 100-200 entries by the time the 31st roles around.
Jeremy Ordan
10-26-2005, 10:16 PM
I agree. I think that this this is going to turn out to be massive. It should be a lot of fun!
Zak Forsman
10-27-2005, 12:28 AM
yeah, looks like a good turnout so far. i can only speak for myself, but i passed on the last fest because the zombie subgenre simply doesn't appeal to me. sci-fi, on the otherhand, offers a vast world of philosophical and theoretical ideas to explore. im researching time travel, telepathy, perception, dreams, the unknown, et cetera and by november i hope to narrow my focus. then, i'll write it in november, shoot it in december and have my girlfriend cut it in january. should be fun.

10-30-2005, 11:32 AM
Spouse says yes but I'm more inclined to just view the final entries. I have no experience with cg (computer graphics?) and it seems this is a big part of the contest which will lead to some cool effects. We came up with a story idea but not one that can be pulled off without a lot of expense. Barring a change of mind, I'm out on this one. Good luck to everyone. I will look forward to seeing the new films.

Cygnet 74 mentioned several that you wouldn't have to have ANY CG for ... i.e. time travel, dreams, etc. Get away from the stereotype your brain may be initially telling you about Sci-Fi, and I think you'll find you don't need any CG to tell a cool story.
Just my opinion, but I think the films that are going to win will have very little CG/FX & will be based more on story/camera ... unless the CG is mind blowingly amazing ... which I'm guessing will be well less than 10% of the entries, if that even.

Agreed. I'm guessing alot of entries will have lots of cg, but few will pull it off very well. It's just damn hard! The ones that do pull it off though, I think will be very good.

Well, if you're inline for it, then you'll still have time to shoot with it because it's supposed to come out in December. Commit now, get your script inline, locations set up, talent on board, then as soon as you get your camera you're ready to roll.
Otherwise, push your limits with the DVX (or whatever camera) you already have. My two cents with regards to waiting.

Agreed. The HVX, while it is a SWEET camera, will not be able to tell better stories then any other camera. (That's the job of the story teller.)

I'm not railing on anyone, and not singling you out Grasshopper, but this excuse is just driving me BUG NUTS! http://users.pandora.be/ramones/emoticon/crazy_eye.gif It's like saying I can't drive to work today becuase I don't know how to do stunt driving.
I'm sure you can come up with a story!
I'm sure you can use your camera and other technical abilities (without CGI) to tell it!
An artist makes art with the material at hand and when the limitations appear the creativity begins -- or it should.
I just hate to think of anyone giving up becuase of this CGI thing ... why not just use the contest as an excuse for a deadline that will force you to complete a great film and get lots of praise from your peers and not worry about if someone sneaks up the point ladder a bit and with great CGI.
Will a fantastic story with great CGI beat your fantastic story without it MAYBE, MAYEB NOT ... certainly plausible ... will crap story with great CGI beat your fantatic story without it -- PROBABLY NOT!
I'm sure you know of a sci fi film called PRIMER that won the GRAND JURY PRIZE at SUNDANCE?
It's just some Dudes laying in a BOX -- it involves time travel and (if memory serves) they never even did the Patty Duke gag where they are on screen at the same time as their other selves.....
Or how about PI -- best director at Sundance -- same damn thing
How about the twilight zone? How about vonegut? Bradbury? Outerlimits?

I have said it once before , my story is going to be SIMPLE!!! No CGI here !.
I bought my DVX in June and joined DVXUSER shortly after . This was my first REAl camera , I always borrowed the shoulder style VHS camcorders.(point & shoot).
With the help of the members here , I had a better understanding on how to use the camera . Then before I knew it , my kids and I were doing a ZOMBIE short . My god I thought what am I doing .I was in way over my head but we finished and ended up near the bottom in the voting ..BUT so what , WE HAD FUN and learned a lot .
And here I am doing a SCI-FI ...
The Moral of this story is ...IF I CAN DO IT SO CAN YOU .
Keep it simple and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!................Ian

not if Warren Beatty and Annette Benning have anything to say about it, lol.

why the 100 post rule?
Jack Daniel Stanley
11-08-2005, 04:30 PM
first to clarify as there is usuallu confusion about this:
You need 100 posts to vote NOT to enter. You can enter with 50K, 100, 63 or 0 posts.
The 100 posts to vote rule is so that your friends, your mom, your crew and all their friends and etc don't all join on the day voting begins just to vote to skew your average (not that you specifically would do that, but that's what it prohibits).
pretty reasonable huh?
and you've got plenty o' time :)

If we think of something else we might do it, but the original idea is out. We are still working on a long cut of the Zombie flick. We still want to make our Sci Fi movie but we might wait until spring and make it longer then 6minutes. We'll see, but I am pretty sure we will be out. Crap I don't know. I sound like Ross Perot.

We just fired our writer this past weekend after the second draft. A few stipulations in the contract I wasn't thrilled with (hadn't signed yet) that the writer's agent had put in there, and the dude (writer) just wasn't listening to our feedback/changes.
As of right now, I'm trying to crank out a new idea, hoping to have it completed by tomorrow. Hopefully will have the six minute version completed with a 5 point story structure, then further flesh it out for a longer version we'll keep for outside of the DVXuser fest.
Brandon Rice

Bummer about the writer. I've got to finish a really close to finished draft by the end of the weekend. I need to secure locations, and start scheduling shoot dates.

I only have half of mine done . I do have a basic idea where we are going with this but the weather can be so unpredictable . tommorrow night (SAT& SUN ) we are shooting our first night scene Sat outside and Sun inside . Never done a night scene before , this should be an experience . In 3 or 4 weeks we will do the final shots which is why the script is left open . If we shoot on Sat and it snows overnight , Sundays shoot will not make sense and therefore we will need to try to explain where the snow came from OR wait and do a re-shoot at a later date . The fun of Winter .

Norm Sanders
11-18-2005, 03:48 PM
Don't worry about length at this point, just write it & see that it's strong. If it's WAY too long (i.e. 15 pages+), then look to see where you can cut out some fat without hurting the story/characters too much.
Even if after it's shot, if you're at 7-8 minutes, you'd be amazed how much you can clean/tighten something up in post to get it to the required max.

Nope, when they start to accept submissions they'll put up a link (look at the rules thread to see what date that is) and then you just go to that link and there you will upload, and on that page it will ask you your title and two or three questions about your film like its name a log ling (so think about that before hand - last time we were all like "... uh ... uh ... log line? uh ... it's a film that's .... uh like uh .... good and stuff ... uh..." ) and then they take uploads through midnight Jan 31.

Think about it:
Six minutes, is a six-page script. That's about two hours of writing. (And several days of editing, but let's not think about that. :undecided ) This is also assuming that you can come up with a story that can be done in six minutes.
Six minutes is about three scenes or locations, which is about two days of shooting.
At a 4:1 shooting ration, you'll have 24 minutes of footage to edit -- easily done in a day.
Effects and ADR will take longer. But if someone else is doing effects they may be able to do this concurrently.
Pre-production is a couple days (based on experience shooting TV commercials and music videos). This assumes that you have a source of actors (like a local theatre, group of friends, etc.)
Plenty of time!

Well THAT'S a new one for me. Never heard of someone backing out of a competition because they had TOO much good talent to choose from.
Scharky, part of the whole competition/deadline is to see what you CAN do in that amount of time. I'm sure everyone could do better if they took the extra time (months, year, whatever) to do their project ... the cool thing is to see what everyone can do under the same constraints.
Just do it.

There are many that haven't even started to film yet including myself , this of course puts a strain on the editing part . So with any luck ..weather permitting we will be starting Boxing day .

scharky
12-23-2005, 09:40 AM
Wow, guys I really appreciate the kind words. But I really don't think I'm going to make it. Here is my problem, I feel the script is really well done, and I feel the talent that I have found could make a really good film, and I feel that rushing that film for the Jan 31st deadline is going to take that away. It wasn't that I was procrastinating :) really, I just finished Awake, just had my show on December 2nd. I also don't think it would be fair to the actors, as I am trying to get the film done for my own personal gain, and they end up with something sub par for their resumes. I'll tell you guys what though, as soon as I'm done with the film, I will post it on DVX user. It will be after the deadline, probably sometime in late February, but I will have a little DVX user showing, since you guys are the ones that inspired me to make the film.
I hope I don't come off sounding like a snob, I would love to enter the contest, if I didn't feel that by doing so, it would comprimise a potentially good film. I don't get many of these oportunities, so I gotta take what I can get :)
Brandon Rice
12-23-2005, 09:44 AM

Norm Sanders
12-23-2005, 12:10 PM
Scharky, I know you don't intend to sound snobbish, as you even stated, but there is just a hint of a suggestion that those of us who ARE rushing to meet the deadline will be putting out sub-par films.
I mean, seriously, if Jack & Sam (jdanstan / Curugon) can crank theirs out in relatively short time, Jack's while running from a Hurricane, I think you're cutting yourself short of what you can do in a certain period of time. Now, if it's that you simply want to take it a little easier, because you just came off the other film, that's one thing ... but unless you're working every single day from now until the end of February to get this next short out, and actually NEED that extra time because there's only so many days in a week ... then great.
Otherwise, you've got the time.
Brandon Rice
12-23-2005, 12:11 PM
Well put Envision... never thought about it that way.
Slimothy
12-23-2005, 12:16 PM
I was thinking about waiting also, and doing a longer film since my storyline (like many others) may not work in the 6 min timeframe. After thinking about it, the short amount of time is what motivates me and forces me to make it work. So I'm doing my best to get it done.
Norm Sanders
12-23-2005, 12:36 PM
So do the longer version as well! We're doing a locked edit of our longer version first, which will be 12-14 minutes in length. Then, we'll cut the scenes we can, tighten up the rest, and make a 6 minute cut as well. That way, we'll satisfy the DVXuser requirements, as well as have a longer piece in our portfolio that we'll be sending out to other festivals, etc.

No, I don't mean to make it sound like this should affect anyone else but my own film. I'm sure those that are working on films right now, even in this short amount of time will have some great work. What I meant to come across is that with this particular script, I really can't see it working in this short amount of time, especially because the location and the traveling that the actors have to do will be time consuming to arrange, and I don't want to rush it with a two day shoot. Remember I live in the middle of nowhere, so all of my actors have to travel, so if we can't fit the entire thing into one weekend, we are pretty screwed. I'm doing the auditions the 7th of January, if everything happens to come together for the 31st, great, i will definitly submit, but I don't think that is going to happen, I am just being realistic with myself, my actors, and my crew. I don't mean this to affect anyone else but me, this script and the actors I choose to use. I really hope this comes across clearly as I don't want to discourage anyone else from entering. 3 months is plenty of time to shoot a film, hell one month is, but that is entirely resource and script based, two things which are just not working for me.

This one is actually kind of cool. I'm totally psyched about seeing the competition. With zombies, you pretty much knew what to expect (although some folks threw a serious curve in there) but with this we could really end up with some waaaaay out there films. Its much more open to interpretation in my opinion.

I wonder if there will be as many entries as Zombiefest. I doubt it just because Sci-fi is that much harder. I can't wait.

Good question, Tim. I originanlly thought this would TRUMP Zombie Fest with nearly twice as many films ... say upwards of a couple hundred. But now I'm also wondering if there will be as many. I think one of the main things that's cut a lot of the competition down was the timing of it taking place through the holidays ... ROUGH time getting schedules to mesh, etc.

I'm in. Actually, I've been shooting today and I'll be shooting tomorrow the second part. I'm a little afraid of the results as it's been so little time to do the tests. We'll, I hope my brand new Quad G5 :) will help me to finish this at time.

hello every body, i'm taking a break from studying my lines, scene study and what have you, man i am excited. things aren't going the way expected, but even better... can't say much more.
Some fool just opened the gas valve wide on one of my jobs which means I'll have no time to complete this entry. Unfortunately, I'm out of this one. I will finish it over the next month or so and post. Good luck to the rest of you:)

Survived our one day of shooting yesterday (a 16 hour day, mind you) and I'm very, very happy with the results. Can't wait to see the rough cut tonight.

I'll Too really thought there would be as many as the Zombie contest .
maybe everyone was Zombied out ?
I think the holidays played a big role as well but for me it has been the weather . All our shots are outside
Last night the temp fell from 50 F to 5F . Add the windchill to that and we packed it in .!!
Trying again BUT closer to home this time.
Schedules are a pain as I work everyother weekend and the guys work during the week with weekends off .
I do hope there is a good turn out for the Sci-Fi contest as I really hate seeing Dvx members not being able to make it .
It would be nice to see how everyone will present their ideas , whether it is a simple story ( twilight style ) or a short done with CGI .
The Zombie fest shorts were really good . I think the Sci Fi contest should be even better !!!

Hey ZombieSquid , first off many thanks for the DVD you sent . It has gotten around for viewing ..all my oldest sons friends think it was great !!!
The bike is a 1932 Ariel 600 cc , 4 cylinder O.H.C , layed out in a like the 4 dots on a dice . very rare here in Canada and in the U.S . It makes a Whopping 24 HP But is incredibly Smooth .
There is a lot of people that think I'm nuts for riding it and it should be a static display ..I disagree ..Ride em don't hide em .
Glad to hear you filming is going good , can't wait to see it .
They are calling for slightly warmer weather this week ,not enough too melt the snow I hope ..lol at least until after the shoot is done .

Threadkiller strikes again! I'm 3 for 0 now. I win!
Seriously though, we've got ONE MORE day of shooting and then I think I'll have it all. Honestly, I just want to get this thing done so that I can get back to work on my "big" project. These contests are like film crack, you do one and then you're hooked for life. I keep saying "just one more" and the next thing I know I'm locked up in a rehab center where I have to perform "favors" for one of the gaurds in exchange for 5 minutes alone with a Samsung VHS-C camcorder and two VCRs.....

Tony, the viewing/judging part of the contest has not started yet. We're in the production stage right now. I am sure Barry or Jarred will make known all the in's and out's of viewing and judging the films at the appropriate time.

Yep, it'll likely be a big ol' banner on the home page, just like Zombie Fest. Can't miss it.

I'm definately in. Just finished everything and I'm fairly happy with the final piece. Some things could be better but I figure that I could keep changing things forever. Good luck to everyone involved!

I just finished shooting the last pick up scene today and hopefully i can squeeze it in there and be done editing tonight. There are a bunch of in-between scenes I wanted to put in for mood changes and such but I think it tells a complete story. Yall will just have to fill in the blanks.

We FINALLY shot our pick-up shots today, due to the fact that today was our only break we've had from the past 35+ days of rain (approaching Noah's flood days worth of rain).
Where we shot, we were also competing some some illegal street bike stunt performers ... guys who could do a wheelie for a 1/2 or longer on their crotch rockets ... one guy went FLYING past us at probably 80 MPH+ doing one ... you know he's going to fast when the rest of his adreneline junkies are commenting "wow, he's going a little too fast there".
One of the guys let us film him as he went past us at about 15-20 MPH, standing on the TAIL of his bike, with his arms spread in the air ... a MUST see. Needless to say, we'll include it in our BTS of places we shot, stuff we had to deal with, etc.
If the mods allow it, I can post just that ONE part of this guy doing the stunt on his bike, since it really has nothing to do with the short, nor would it give any information/publicity about it. But I'll wait for approval here before I'd do that.
Anyway, we got the final pick-up shots done, score is near complete (LOVING what we've heard so far), and visual FX are coming along.

Wow Norm, sounds fun! HAHA! I'd love to see those crazy bike stunts. I am sitting in our "music room" working with our composer right now. He's got about 1/3 of the film finished, and it's sounding real good. Trying to go for a really unique sound, and I think he's getting it real nice! Everything else is done! Except for one small effect that we may have to just put something temp in for now. We'll see. Best of luck to you all! (I really mean it too!)

HEY YA'ALL BACK FROM ....CALLAGHAN COUNTRY, LONGARSED WEEKEND. CHAD'S STILL GOT TO WORK ON THE EDITING (man he's got some work to do) i gotta tell ya it was some shoot, working wth CHAD and CRAVEN and the rest of the crew, they worked together like they been doing this a long time. they were tight!!!! that man didn't drink or eat he was going a mile a minute. he and his wife were gratious host. made sure the actors were comfortable. i got to work with some fine actors. i learned a hell of a lot watching one particular actor CHAD landed, what a dream come true. CHAD'S directions helped me pull off some stuff i had felt stymied on. we were all running on empty! i mean like no sleep for many days. and of course he shared some awesome cigars, the best i ever had! man i just hope i did his movie justice for which it deserves, great script! anyways now i can sleep. oh and by the way his kids are so cute! so friendly warm loving, great family! i look forward to another project.
