Wintry January night, the present. Order of events: an official contest announcement from one Jarred Land, then the frenzied three months of filming that you’ve just witnessed has alas met its end, but with nothing more enlightening to add beyond evidence of some last-minute editing across all points on the non-linear globe. You've heard of trying to find a needle in a haystack? Well, stay with us now and you'll be part of a thread whose mission is not to find that proverbial needle. No, their task is even harder. They've got to both screen and vote on not film noir nor western nor superhero nor dance-fest, but on a genre of a different color...and in just a moment you'll screen and vote with them, because you've just landed in The DVXUser Zone.

Christopher Walken ,to me, is about as sci-fi as you can get

If only there was some sort of "properties" button you could right-click to find out the size of pics... hmm.

I guess that was a lame attempt to sound "on topic" while making a joke about size and robots... do you think the cost of pipe would really come into play down there?

Please look at TC's banner and you decide: 1) humans piling up from robot destruction or 2) the sure-fire way to guarantee I won't be pissed that you ordered lobster on our date at the robot ball.

I don't think that it is too much color - after all you have cartoon characters in there. The color palet is nice, and matches the feel so I think that it works. (Now if you were trying to go for the erie, scary sifi banner I would say you completely missed the boat.)

look into his eyes....

Norm Sanders
10-21-2005, 03:16 PM
So who ripped out my entire sig, and why not a considerate PM about it first so I could fix it??

Until the previous page, I've never seen mention of banner size limits, nor is there anything stating it when uploading the banner to the sig (like how the avatar specifically states 75x75 max. or 24kb). EDIT: I've now read through the ENTIRE thread, and see where the suggestion came in for sig size, but never realized it suddenly became a hard & fast rule. Soooo, why aren't other sigs over 70 high being deleted too?

Also, here's a quote I'd rec'd from Jarred on it:

yeah your sig banner is cool.. and your avatar is now too.

So what exactly am I doing wrong, and where are the posted rules I'm breaking?

Finally, I've been working by example; Barry S' sig is 750x70 (where I got the idea for the size), and even the sig example you posted on the front page is 600x85

Alright I have this as my SIG but its not showing up in my sig

I also REALLY dig dj200423's sig as well, which exceeds the hight limit that's being mentioned.

Niebs

okay, now my sig is regulation...

Daniel Skubal
10-21-2005, 05:26 PM
If it's really an issue, I will get rid of it, I am just keeping text out of the sig to deduct from the real estate on the page. Technically mine is taking up as much space as everyone elses's with text in theirs for example, john hudson has around the same vertical height with his sig because of the text below it in his sig.

If it really is an issue, though, I will most definitely remove it.

Norm Sanders
10-21-2005, 05:35 PM
Sorry, dj, not to single you out ... believe me, there are others with higher than 70 tall as well. I personally LOVE your sig, and am jealous of the artwork (great job).

I'm just wondering why mine was singled out for going over in length, which takes up no extra real estate with regards to height (Jarred's original concern, asking people to stay under 150 tall).

Not only was it singled out, but the entire sig, not just the banner, was completely erased, then replaced with the new ideal dimensions/instructions. I know it wasn't Jarred, because he'd already approved it ... so I'm just curious why it was decided I wasn't worth PM'ing about it.

Daniel Skubal
10-21-2005, 05:37 PM

But remove it please. Make them all the same; this is per JARRED.

and thus Jarred speaketh saying "let not any creature in the galaxy maketh his signature greature than 569 X 70, as the key holder TC hath shown us".

And lo, there were many who did obeyeth and and yet some rebels would stand in defyance to the founder, and thus the Banner Wars began. Some would exceed this decree in girth and yet others in stature, but yeah not so many did offend in girth as did in stature, yes definately more exceeded the limit in stature rather than girth, come to think of it - verily in fact I say the rebels defied the Galactic Overload only by making them too tall and I don't think any were too wide

.... er ... now where was I ...

oh yes, and as the rebel horde did fling their oversized banners hether and to, willy nilly about the galaxy, as it were, causing rampant scrolling down the page and the affliction of many with carpul tunnel syndrome. So great was the chaos wrought by these well intentioned evil doers, that the Galactic Overlord had little choice, and yeah, thusly he did dispatch his chiefest bounty hunter, assasin, and pilot, John Hudson, known throuought the galaxy as ... THE MODERATOR ...

And so THE MODERATOR did smite them, and smite them good, verily it was as if the collosal banners were never in existance, and after more smiting, he did smote some more, and then he had a ham sanwich, which was good but he and the Mrs. and Junior were out of pickles, which would have made it better. John had always loved pickles ... er sorry ...

And thus on finishing his good but not fantastic sandwich John did resume smitething, and yea he did not lay his hammer down until balance had been restored to the galaxy, and thus the banner wars were over before they began.

And lo, though immiediatley afterwards there was minor unrest and initial bickering, even those he smote would come to join hands with the federation, making a daisy chain across the milky way, and singing "Cum by Ya Galactic Overloard" Thank God almaighty, Cum by ya .... indeed.

he did smote some more, and then he had a ham sanwich, which was good but he and the Mrs. and Junior were out of pickles, which would have made it better. John had always loved pickles ... er sorry ...

Brilliant, Brilliant I say. That piece reminds me of Monthy Python and the holy grail, when they get to the cave and the monster is about to kill them when the animator has a massive heart attack and dies ...

Good stuff!

Thanks Jack. I just didn't feel right about this contest without a little Simmons. Wouldn't it be crazy if Richard was Gene's little brother?

I honestly appreciate everybody on this forum who can make me laugh out loud.

Hey this banner thing is brand new to me as of this contest. Then I started at zero on .gifs yesterday. I think I'm starting to get it, but would you mind telling me how many frames that is and the duration of each frame? Also what program are you using?

I told Jeremy that I wanted to make a banner that represents a looping, 6 second movie. You're getting close to it there. You have beginning, middle, and ahem, end.

So gimme the stats of what we can't see. Is that 32 color? How many frames? Frame duration? Program?

Sorry to be anal about this, but I've decided that I need to get a lot more capable on the web. I had a guy that I was going to pay to make my site into a nice flash site and I think he was abducted by aliens.

Actually this is my entry for teh DVX SCi FI fest -- this IS my movie ...

hmmm ... its 51 frames long 288X70 at 72 res and its 173K most frames are Zero duratiom except the ones that hold and the flashing richards are .1 seconds each.

I did it in image ready. I had never done it before either so I just searched animate in photoshop and it told mem how to do it, and then I just experimented.

There's only two movies my dad ever brought me to... Tron and Raiders of the Lost Ark. I remember Tron was somewhat lost on my father. (He is/was a beer drinkin', rough-ass carpenter.)

I saw Tron again about a year ago and I'll tell you to follow your impulse to not spoil the memories. I even had a yellow light-cycle with the pull-cord and I brought it with me EVERYWHERE.

I may still buy one of those if I find one on ebay. That movie created a lust for bullet-bikes that I finally outgrew just last year! There was a concept bike around 1988 that strongly resembled a light-cycle. Had they ever made it I would still own one.

Yeah, it holds up pretty well actually. Performances standard pro for the day and the visual look holds up really wel IMHO I think cuz they went for such a uniqur look and basically animated over the image right -- which means you are saved from bad CGI and it just looks "cool".

Now Goonies, DON'T WATCH IT AGAIN AS AN ADULT!

I may no longer have a choice in the matter...
My son was looking at the Tron banner, and quickly became intrigued. I told him a bit about the film, and now he want me to buy the DVD asap so he can see the "bad computer man".

Now you know you can enter -- just not compete. Would be rad if an XL2user whipped out this amazing film and we were all like DAMN! And everbody would be saying "you see people it's about content and the camera is a tool and a skilled person can get good looking stuff out of an XL2 or aDVX ... you see people that's what I've been saying."

And some people would be all like "XL2 totally rocks and the DVX sucks!" and the DVX people would be all like "Nuh'uh, does not!"

Wonder how hard it would be after votes are tallied to draw a circle around all the non DVX / HVX entries and just call that the OTHER or OPEN category and not have prizes for it but you could still win 1st 2nd or 3rd in the OPEN Catagory ... Barry ... Jarred ... in all your infinate free time ... guys?

You know I think the second most used phrase around here is "not that there's anything wrong with that" followed after someone pointing out that someone or something is gay. The most common used phrase I think is "we can't answer you because your question it's too vague, there are too many variables" or words to that effect, you know after someone asks "how to light" or "how much to charge for editing" or what the best settings for the DVX are. But I digress. When I posted the original Richard Simmons banner Jarred said "That's the gayest thing I've ever seen, not that there's anything wrong with that." Which was in fact my intent, to create the gayest banner possible (not that there's anything wrong with that). We have XL2 users making there voices heard around here, and I've learned that there are even cool chics about. But I'm waiting for someone that's Gay with a vengence (not that there's anything wrong with that) to round out our Adam Sandler level of PC and tolserance around around here :)
EDIT: I'm not gay BTW ... not that there's anything wrong with that.

They aren't so much enigmatic as just very few in number, so you will run into them less often.

But Trent made a coold flick for Zombie fest, and half of I&T is of the finer gender and they made a cool flick, and then there are some ladies that have been around for a while I think Like THartely and Pookie is a lady too I think.

I dunno, never saw it. Looks like zombies to me, but then again, it also looks like Skelator from He-Man, in a sherrif's outfit.

ha,ha - it's cool man. they do look like zombies though.

i just slapped that one together in half an hour. I'm going to start practicing a bit on the photoshop and make a better one.

Hey, pretty cool on Spock's hands integrated into DVX. I like it! I think McCoy's side could use a little "something", but not sure what .... nice fade on the BG color as well.

Was this shot on DVX or XL2?? :)

I like any banner that's got humor... and the strategic use of the V is great.

"They Live" is definitely Sci-Fi... about as much as you can get actually. If that flick wasn't so dated it would be great. Somebody should steal that concept for their entry.

Well, I don't know what they'll say, but as far as design, animation, and overall look it's FREAKIN' KILLER! WOW, JACK!!!!! However, for those who don't click on the banner, could be a little confusing about promoting the sci-fi fest.

So what's the red stuff? Lasers, yarn, what?

Jack Daniel Stanley
11-05-2005, 02:10 PM
I guess they're laser tractor beams???
they were in the original XL2 graphic so I kept them for that
I won't leave it up for long anyway because I like my Barbarella Banner much better.
Just a little in joke :)

mmm ... I think its one of those things that if we don't talk about publicly in a thread...
...and if it doesn't get to the point where the screen is hard to look at because the whole forum is jumpin' around all over the place...
...then they may over look it...
although you've probably blown it now, LOL -- good going, hahaha

You just nailed it.

Unless any other MOD/ADMIN differs...

It's really just a judgement call I think. Both of yours are fun and look nice. Others I have seen (Tarylou for example) are just like a bad discoteque gone wrong.

SO quit talking about it! (Youre attracting attention!)

I'm just sickly jealous of Jack's current one. That's just insanely cool work right there.

go into where you edit your signature, select your picture, and click the little button that says "insert link" (little globe with a paper clip) and then copy and paste url.

when you go to usercp, and edit signature, it should come up with all the font and size options, and it's one of those buttons. idk, maybe yours is set up different...

This is what you should be seeing

Go to EDIT OPTIONS and make sure at the bottom you have WYSIWYG selected as MISC OPTIONS in the dropdown menu

The actual Matrix Code says something like

"Jared is a stinky litte monkey kitty.." or something

Jack Daniel Stanley

I think it actually says "Jared is a stinky litte monkey kitty...who looks great since he lost 300 pounds and got a a television endorsement deal..."

jdanstan, very nice... Barbarella. Now there's a cheesy old flick begging for a remake!

Waltind,

Damn, man. I spent something around five minutes staring at the matrix banner looking for the logo. I was beginning to think it was the old "magic eye" hidden picture shite making a comeback (which I never saw either). Then I realized that John hadn't added to the version in your quote.

Norm Sanders
11-11-2005, 10:04 PM
I was looking at it too, but then realized it's just linked to Isara ... maybe that's what he meant.
