I have heard about this process. Anyone know what it entails?

setup for HD in your editing software (1280x720 or 1920x1080)...put your footage into the timeline...it will be a good deal smaller in your preview window...size up the footage until it fits the frame and render it out as HD...you will in effect be destroying the image quality becuase you are only zooming in on the footage...there is no was to get more pixels from what you captured with your camera...here is a little chart showing the various sizes...

not to mention the compression...DV is a pretty lossy compression and you'll just be zooming in on that too...not a pretty sight...

You could use the info from Disjecta's Uprezzing post to get an larger image with much less loss. You would just have to substitute the HD sizes in the Photozoom target size information.

Hmmm...is this unacceptable? Uprez (http://www.changedcrocodile.com/Software/Resizer2.html)

16:9 DV to 16:9 HD (720) and one HD with the PaintShop Unsharp mask applied.

And I meant the resolution loss, not the picture. Buncha wiseguys...mumble mumble mumble...

uprezzing 4:3 DV to 16:9 DV is alot different than going all the way up to HD resolution. not to sound snooty or anything, but, why would you want to uprez to HD anyway? how would you deliver the content? and uprezzing a still image is alot different that uprezzing moving 4:1:1 compressed imagery too.

16mm & 35mm Film has higher resolution than HD so they are downrezzing in a way going to HD :(

What is the resizer. exe on your site?

Did you make the software?

I was wondering how to get a high quality transfer to film.

Or instead how to make mini-DV footage that is a little soft, sharper without making
it look fake (using the sharpening filters in FCP) in order to burn a high quality
DVD master.

I was wondering if up-rezzing would help. And have never done it.

Yes. But it really only works well with PNG images.

If you have photoshop 7 or above you can use the action I created to uprez your footage. (It is not as good as photozoom pro, but hey it's free!)

(Go to Resources - How To)

Here is the direct link as well:

There is also a comparison between using different programs to uprez so you can see the results form each.

I thought Grame has a product in the works that would do this quite easily.

It's in the works.... THere's a early demo image on my site too. And also check out:

http://www.nattress.com/scaling_test.jpg

It should appear first as a plugin for Motion, the software being GPU based, and then as a stand-alone conversion application.

Hey Graeme,

When is it done? I'll PM you with my concern and question...

My friend just bought a Teranex upconverter. If you're in L.A. we can "demo" your footage on it! This is the site I'm developing for his new company. Hope posting this doesn't violate any site rules. We're planning on buying banner advertising on DVXUSER once the system is ready for prime time.

Oh, the e-mail address on the site isn't directed yet--just PM me.

Is not up res to HD then to film a pointless extra expense? The film out company will up res the footage when they do the film out.

Up res to HD then to film is not going to give better quality. You start with DV and a dozen up res steps is not going to change that. Filmout is really not necessary today anyway as all [but maybe two] film festivals don't require film and if your flick gets picked up the distributor can handle a filmout.

As for "high quality" DVD - Again, you are still starting with SD and DVD will play SD...

So the whole idea is mute...

However, if I were to shoot a short/featurette/feature on a SD camera like the DSR450 (or maybe the PDW510/PDW530 SD XDCAMs), I would still want to do an upconversion to HDCAM (even though my distibution format would be SD DVD) on my friend's Teranex so I would have an HDCAM master show at festivals that support the format.
