Well I've decided that I'm turning to the darkside... me and my partner in crime are going to shoot on film from now on. ( The bigger projects anyway. i.e. stuff over 30 minutes or so... ) I've not been really exposed too much to film so I really want to dive into it and go that route. Is is much more expensive to shoot that way but we the connections and resources available to make it much cheaper for us. I really like this message board; the people seem very eager to help and have LOTS of great info for us beginners ( and experts in some cases ) :)

Since I don't see too many grabs and clips posted in this area I thought Id just share a bunch from a year or so ago. This was a project that my buddy had written and was directing. It ended up to be about 20 minnutes long. The end of next month we are going to pick it back up and add much more to it, hopefully to make it about 40 minutes or so. I'll post a few grabs from the dailies for you guys to check out. These haven't been altered in anyway - just developed and transferred. Some of the grabs have a bit of grain in them, just becuase we were using mixed film stock and different speeds of film. More of a learning experience.

I'll also post a short clip of some of the shots. Quicktime seems to washout some of the colors a bit but it's not like these were color corrected or anything.

Thanks for the comments. Was 16mm film and I believe it was Kodak. It was a Bolex camera hand wound motor, non sync. We have a new camera new I believe it's a Bolex Rex -2 it has it's own motor but it's not crystal sync. I dont' know how we will be doing sound recording since it's a bit noisy. We'll have to figure something out.

NICE! I love how film looks....I have a Bolex 16mm that I'm hoping to shoot with as soon as I can afford it. That stuff can get expensive.

Thanks for posting...it's nice to see that film is still alive and kicking...and that you got such good results with a hand-wound Bolex (same as mine).

Sync the sound can be complicated but this is a war movie and I think that trere isn´t much dialogue and don´t worry... the combat scenes are very noisy :)

I have corrected this pic. I add more contrast (color curves) and some color corection and desaturate. I love this film look.

Yeah I like a higher contrast look myself. Nice job. The 20 minute version of this was desaturated so there was only about 9% color to the war scenes. Looked pretty good. We are planning to shoot more for it to make it longer next month. Also we plan to shoot some other films... probabaly between 30 min - 60 min long.

I have always known the digital way of doing things so it's a lot different to work with this chemical process instead of an electronic one. I'm 27 and figure it's about time to get back to the original way of doing things and see what I can create.

The main problem is because we're gonna use a bolex which isn't crystal sync :( lol , and according to Mr. Barry Green lol, it's a royal pain in the ass. So we are gonna have to figure out what to do about sound. I'm afraid well have to ADR everything and basically assemble the sound track scene by scene. But I've always enjoyed that kind of work ( post audio ) so a fun challenge nonetheless.

I'm up for it.

So, the obvious question now is, "How do I make my film look more like video? How can I get that video look for the film I shoot?"

Just kidding, those are really nice! Great job! Film has such a naturally beautiful quality that still can't be 100% captured by even the best video camera.

Lookin' forward to some clips from this.

Exactly!! lol I was asking that a few months ago.. I wanted to achieve that ' The Ring ' look to something else. But it we need anything to loook like video I'll just shoot it with my Sony. hahah. Even though there are a lot of SD Sony haters on here I like my VX2100. I has and will serve me well. I just wanna do it old school now.

Thanks for the comments. As soon as I have stuff to post I will.

Hey Reflex, good job, the action looks good, a little CC should bring it together. If your bolex has an adjustable shutter, which I think the rex 2's have, you might try closing it down a bit to give less light to achieve the stacato "Saving Private Ryan" look, just compensate by opening up the iris. Also, if you are brave, remove the coating on the lens, they also did this for the movie. Its very rewarding shooting on film and making it look good, isn't it.

Man, I really dig WW2 movies. Heck even most of the video games. Those captures look really sweet. I especially like the two SS on the MG and the guy screaming next to the tank (it's a tank right?).
I did the effects on my buddies WW2 short which was shot completely in the frigid nasty winter... you were smart enough to avoid that. I can understand how miserable the battle of the bulge must have been.
I am curious how much of that is authentic equipment and how much is replica?

The compression isn't the best but hopefully you guys get the idea. (http://www.randomcreatureface.com/Films/thegi.mov)
This was shot on, I believe, an Arri S with Kodak 200.

I really like the dark side(film) I like digital too, but as a rookie filmmaker(less than 5 years) I really do believe that in order to create the future, you must study the past. Film is an incredible learning tool and I embrace it wholly. Anybody here from Oklahoma?

That's it baby, when you got it, flaunt it.

I liked the captures and clip, Reflex. I never get tired of good WW2 films. Shorts or features. Love 'em. Haven't seen too many Korean War shorts though. Oh well.

Bentrandom, I dig your clip too. About 3/4 of the way through, the clip stops and won't play any further. But I liked what I saw. Good stuff. Very well shot.

Film rocks. It's just so darn expensive...

I just watched 'the gi' and thought it was really cool. a new spin on things. The compression wouldn't let me see the full quality of it but still great to watch nonetheless. Good job.

I do not think that the adjustable shutter was available until the Rex 4s, I may be wrong, but check it out.

Good Stuff.

Good Stuff.

We ( a buddy and me ) checked out the camera, and we really cant tell what it is. It's a Bolex H16 but Rex 1,2,3,4 etc.. we can't tell ( maybe a 2? ) Now my mind totally went blank on the shutter but I think that it did have a shutter control. What I remember for sure is that it has 12,15,24,32,64 fps... The camera runs smooth, no rust at all, the gate it not loose or jittery, over all the camera is in great shape. The previous owner took excellent care of it. Plus it was a complete kit. metal case, attachments, the motor ( if you dont wanna use it wind up ) some lens cleaning brushes, ND/ correction filters, all the original manuals, tripod, etc..... all for 300 bucks. Not a bad deal. We should be shootin the rest of the above stuff this next month. :)

Where did you get your transfer done?

I wish I had more frame grabs online.

I have a few frame grabs:

http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/n2s/grabs/01.jpg
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/n2s/grabs/02.jpg

Sorry for the terrible quality, these were taken off a 7mb QuickTime video :(
From a music video I did a while ago for a band called From First to Last. It was shot on 5218.

And some more even lower quality grabs . . .

http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/idt/01.jpg
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/idt/02.jpg

Another music video, this time for a band called It Dies Today. The video was for the Showtime series Masters of Horror soundtrack.
Shot on 7218.

I have some pictures of the setups from the above also:

The first video:
Band members rode on a dolly connected to our camera dolly
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/n2s/01.jpg
I had a 12k HMI through this tiny window at the end of the hall for a super hot backlight
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/n2s/02.jpg

And for the second video:
We had two 9-light Maxis on a 60' condor to sort of side key/ edge the band
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/idt/setups/01.jpg

And two 10ks through a 12x12 frame of grid cloth to key the band
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/idt/setups/02.jpg

And here is a wide shot of the entire setup before we dialed in the Condor
http://www.kevinzanit.com/projects/idt/setups/03.jpg

Sorry for the terrible quality frames, I will try to get more, high quality grabs.

That was meant for you reflex....

I was just curious.
It looks pretty good.
Doesnt look like some of the high rade spirit 16mm transfers Ive seen but still looks very good.

I think the grain is at a good level to give it character without being too grainy.

oh ok... actually it was done at Columbia in Chicago. I wasn't the one that had it done. The grainyness mostly came from the fact that we were using a higher speed film and then it was darker out so the gain had to be bumped etc.. but it works for what it is. :)
