Looking for a Lap top. i am in the process of moving to another country. want to be able to take DVX and Vegas with me. What are the minimums you need in terms of Hard drive speed processors Ram etc. i know whats written on the Vegas manual, but i am looking for just reliable performance. no real need for BLAZing speed or ability to watch MAgic bulleted clips in realtime or anything.

like is 5400 RPM hardrive fast enough?

My desktop is more than adequate. 512 ram 7200RPM hardrıve and about 2.2 ghtz processor.

The equivalent in Laptop terms is not that expensive. somewhere about 1300 various companies. but the processor speeds tend to sit around 1.6-1.8 Ghtz is that fast enough? because using it would save lots of money without upgrading to a 2.1 Ghtz processor. and most of the harddrive speeds are in the 5400 RPM range. again the upgrade to a 7200 RPM hardisk is like $350

so do i need the maxed out gear to run the NLE efficiently?

My Toshiba Satellite M35X-S309 works just fine with DV Rack. Specs here: http://www.compare123.com/Electronics/Computer_Hardware_PC/Notebooks/Pentium_M/1.4_Ghz/SP2667989.html#specsheet

They're going for under $800 now....I paid 1200 last year. :(

Anyway, use the "extra" money for more memory and such. And a pretty case. :)

Be sure you get two hard disks.

wow thats only 1.4 ghtz...... im surprised that its fast enough.

Gerderdan, have you ever edited on it? or is the fact that it can run DV rack prove it has enough power to run vegas?

I still have the stock hard drive on mine, so...no.

But Vegas will run on real dogs...it just won't be as pleasant an experience.

Truthfully, I wouldn't try any "real" editing on a laptop of any sort. Maybe some rough cuts and such, if I ahd to. But for the real thing? A laptop keyboard would drive me crazy, and the monitors just don't cut it as fra as I'm concerned.

At least not one in a price range I could justify to myself.

Best idea...ask this again in the Vegas forum. I'm sure there's someone who uses a laptop with it. Silly people. :)

The thing about laptops is they are still WAAAAY behind the times in terms of performance. They are still getting away with packaging laptops with 256megs of RAM. Thats a farce. We are easily at 1gig to 2 gigs in the Desktop world. So, you really need to make sure that you see where the RAM is at before you sink down good money. Too bad laptops were not sold in components, like Desktops, so you could build them as you please. But, my suggestion is to not even consider a laptop with less than 512 megs of RAM.

Especially when the recommended ram for xp is 512. I got a laptop with 1gb ... works ok.
