Hmmm.

I see that a camera dock is being sold as an accessory for the new ipod.... basically allowing you to offload pics from your digital still camera into your ipod. I wonder if DVCPROHD can somehow be offloaded to an ipod (for temporary field storage)? I know that some sort of "record now button" has to be in place... In other words you can't just record media to a hard drive with out a brain to tell the hard drive what to do. Like a laptop. I think the ipod would work as a storage device in unison with a laptop... but what about other options?

It just seems like the new iPod could somehow come in handy with the HVX??

Seems like some sort of P2 card reader that will plug directly into the iPod.

Also, perhaps once stored on the iPod, the media could be played back for reference?

Just stirring a bit....

OOPS- I just realized that another DVXer posted basically the same question that I just asked already.

the just released video capable Ipod, unfortunately does not offer a Firwire port anymore. Only USB. And Panasonic decided to ditch the USB port on the HVX. Convenient isn't it.
Also the Apple camera dock/reader is also USB only,

It wouldnt be able to play back anything from the HVX anyway, as it can only playback up to resolutions 320x240 at H.264 and MPEG4.

THe older Ipods should work fine though.

Barry Green just posted a reply to a question of mine saying that the HVX will have both firewire and USB ports...(see the firestore thread) Hope that helps... John

Streaming is via firewire. Controlling an external drive is via firewire. Connecting to a computer is via USB.

I sure hope that's not true. That would suck. What possible excuse could there be for that? USB is designed for keyboards, mice, and drawing tablets. I wish Intel and everyone else would stop pretending and use the appropriate conduit, which is Firewire. In real-world tests, Firewire 400 beats USB 2.

Ugh. This would be the first major misstep to come to light about this camera.

I'm not sure whether you can connect to the computer via Firewire or not. I guess you probably should be able to; in which case the USB2 port would really just be an alternate way to connect to the computer.

But I don't know that for sure. It may be that connecting to the computer isn't possible by firewire; I'm reporting it the way I heard it: firewire for streaming/offloading, USB2 for computer connection. But that doesn't necessarily rule out firewire for computer connection, as the firewire protocol for both AV/C and SBP2 are both present...

Let's hope so!
