Hey guys I've been away for a while (all the excitement of the HVX was getting to me and at the time the wait was so much longer than it is now :) ) so I may not be entirely up to date on whats going on with the HVX. Last time I was here the major concern was the cost of P2 cards and their limited storage. Today (actually right now) apple is supposed to be unveiling some new iPod that plays back video and is supposed to have increased storage space of up to 80 gigs I've heard.

I have never owned an iPod so I'm not sure if they were able to d/l footage in the past but if this one is designed with video in mind then I think it would be interesting not only to capture footage to it but also to carry around your movies to show people who may have an interest in your abilities.

I am expecting that most people who buy this will have the mind set that it is just for watching movies and tv, but for us it could be an interesting tool when used in conjunction with the HVX.

From what I understand, the new iPod is for video viewing in addition to an MP3 player. Having nothing to do with the HVX, one could store clips of one's reel to show to someone if you happen to run into a potential contact.

But regarding the HVX, the only thing that might be good about this iPod would be the 80 gig capacity (if it's possible to output from the camera to an iPod that is). But I doubt you'd be able to view HVX hi def clips on that tiny little screen. Unless there would be some native program that allowed you to do it?

Hopefully itunes is updated to do just that (show footage). Now that I think about it, Apple could probably tie all of this into their video packages and somehow make it final cut pro compatible.

Mine broke once for no reason 15 days after I bought it.

your friend must be very careless. i've had mine over a year and had no problems whatsoever. don't let your friend's experience turn you away, that's quite unusual.

My younger bro is on his 3rd one since last christmas. He always takes good care of them. The first two just up and died for no reason.

I love ipods, but lets face it they are prone to problems. However, they're so cool that most people, including myself, are willing to deal with it.

Each ipod I've had has had to be replaced at least once within the first month. One of them twice and I'm gentle in nature :)

I'm getting a video one just for fun and if it breaks I'll get another one. :)

Did you use fabric softner? :)

The iPod is a consumer product, and I, for one, would be very shy about trusting one to hold valuable footage.

I probably did...

It was an iPod shuffle though, but the most impressive thing: I only lost two songs! I didn't even have to re-sync it! Tell me about solid state reliability!

The drive BUS in that is not optimized for large data transfers. I think a better alternative is to use a drive with a high buffer cache like the Firestor. These HD's are good in a pinch but everday use will kill them in no time. But instant video playback on the drive screen is appealing.

iPOD supports H.264 so high def in the future wouldnt be a problem as far as a format for viewing footage is concerned....but the screen res is another story.

We're just talking about data storage here. The fact that the new iPod plays "video" really doesn't make it more or less suitable for capturing data from a digital camera.

Also, it doesn't play even NTSC resolution. It's only 320x240, and has to be encoded in H.264. None of this has anything in common with the HVX200 or any other camcorder (fortunately).
