Sorry to add another NLE thread, and possibly in the wrong forum? I didn't want to add it to any specific category, e.g. FCP forum, Avid forum, etc..
I am new to the group, so please all me to me introduce myself. I’m a man of little wealth, but a bit of taste,, for prosumer video gear.
I am somewhat experienced in the quasi-professional video industry. I’ve seen products have their heyday,, and quickly lose it; I personally owned a Media 100xs ($25k NLE system), and $10k Panasonic MII deck – both worth a couple hundred dollars now. I don’t cry about it. They paid for themselves many times over.
After 5 years of shooting 16 and 35mm., I am about to re-enter the video world, mostly due to the 24p HD availability. (anyone interested in a Bolex SBM 16mm or 35mm Mitchell Fries movie camera for sale?)
I've been reading these posts for about a week. THANKS to all for providing the single best source for the HVX200!
Okay, so here are several questions/comments.
About to order an HVX 200, and to do 24p HD, mostly for short film works, for film festivals. From reading the posts, I gather that Vegas is the best editing software available for 24p. I've never used it, but after reading the features, and overwhelming rave reviews, I really want to try it! But I don't think I want to jump aboard a sinking ship. Sony and Panasonic aren't chumming up enough to make the DVCpro HD happen with Vegas. Very sad indeed, but I heard it straight from Jan (from Panny) at ResFest in Chicago last weekend.
So, what's the consensus on the best method of editing DVCpro HD, 24p in the future?
note: I own a Dual 2.4 Xeon system, with SCSI 10k drives, so I'd prefer to stay in the MS world (but I haven't ruled out FCP).
The Pro HD post options:
1. Vegas with the Avid Codec: Very slow from reports on the frontline. Not probably a good idea to use a codec that the NLE was NOT designed for..?
2. Vegas and in intermediary Codec (Cineform). I've never found a in-between codec all that fun to work with, and prefer to stay native.
3. Edius from Canopus: I hear good things about it, especially from the Panasonic guys at ResFest, but I'd prefer to hear more from real power-users. Someone know of a good source for a review of this app? I want to like it, but fear buying into a clunker. I have tried a number of NLE packages (speed Razor, DPS's NLE, and others). Mostly, they were a huge drain on time, never really worked well, poorly supported, and I fear I may have a Edius-complex as a result.
4. FCP 5: I edited on a Mac G3 and G4 with Media 100 for years. I liked it and hated it. It worked well, but the lack of features, options, and cost of upgrading gave me a sour taste for the Apple monopoly. I stood waiting for the ability to capture via firewire for years, while PC users did it for $30,, after a long wait, it cost me thousands for the Media100 option. I waited for years to burn to DVD while PC users did it for $200,, after the long wait it cost me several thousand (both a M100 problem more so than Apple's).
5. Avid Pro HD: My friends who have jumped to the darkside, soon regretted it tremendously. Avid seems to soak it costumer base for all they can. I prefer to stay clear of them, but if someone can convince me they've seen the error in their ways, and they are now a kinder, more gentle NLE company, I'm all ears.
6. Premiere Pro 1.5 - I currently own this, but it will also require an intermediary codec (see number 2.) So, I'm reluctant to commit to it.
7. ?
Thoughts, preferences, caveats??
