If you shoot on 16mm and then have the stock developed and telecined to a MiniDVtape is there any problem with playback? I mean since film is 24p and video is 29.97 does that affect things? What about different frame rates on the camera? (undercranking, overcranking etc... ) Or doesn't it matter at all since the frames of film are whole frames and it just get's put onto the tape as full frames like the DVXs 24p mode?
Am I looking at this too complicated?

They insert a 3:2 pulldown just like the DVX does. You'll end up with 29.97 material.
In-camera speed changes are treated the same way. They can also adjust playback speed in telecine. Wonderful things are possible. And transfers to DV aren't half bad either.

No problem at all. The nice things about shooting film is that is is really easy to get that film look right away...

So basically , when i get the tape back, i will capture it in my editing system as it's if I shot a normal 30i video? Like set my project to import regularly and set everything to 29.97?

is it possible for film to be transfered to tape @ 24fps so that you can author a TRUE 24fps DVD?

Does that even make a difference though?

You could use another application to remove the pulldown from the transferred footage if you wanted. But there are few instances where that would be necessary (or make a difference). A true 24p DVD would gain you a small increase in capacity and allow for true progressive display but that's about it - otherwise visually identical.

You can also get higher quality transfers off of 16mm film. Generally you ask for a 2k or 4k transfer and the beauty/simplicity of it is they just toss the whole transfer onto a Harddrive for you. My friend did this for his senior film and it looks stellar.
