... OK so aside from the marathon being in town which cost us nearly an extra 1/2 hour to find a way to get around when we arrived. hanging out in Chi town for the day was pretty fun. hit the I-max out on navy pier and such .. anyway. spent a little time chatting with Jan, and a little hands on time with the HVX at resfest. all i can say is.. wow.. thet camera really really impressed me. hands on the zoom and focus rings as said before, are really nice to the touch and have just the right amount of resistance for silky smooth operation. the image even in 1080i without any cine gama or prgressive capture was really really nice.. the footage showed was great, and I'm uploading the stuff I captured from the demo cam to the deck i had in my jacket right now.. just kidding Jan. anyway viewing the image on a pani monitor and on the LCD I was enthralled with the clean lines and amazing color detail. the higlights rol off so smoothly and nicely, and the lattitude.. well, i cant say that its x amount of stops or such, but its definitely seemed to be more than a DVX100A. and this was even NOT with any cinegamma! I was shooting from inside the museum down through the hall, and out a window. I had my black jacket in frame with beatiful detial in the shadows, and I still has great detail and coor saturation outside on a tree and such out the window.. anything blow out certainly didnt look it with the highlights being so smooth. .. anyway .. so i was impressed. and of course Jan put on a great presentation, and fielded the usual chitter chatter questions. a few points of interest that I cant reclall if any one covered before..
1. the 1394 port is a 4 pin NON POWERED port so any off the shelf drive you dump to in the field will have to have its own power scource.
2. the 1394 port is a 1394a/FW400 port so using a FW800 drive wont gain you dump speed off the cam, but will still gain speed when plugged into your NLE
3. hand on, this camera is really cool
.. that about covers it.
anyway theres enough information about the camera floating around here to stuff your stocking this entire holiday season, but let me assure you. hands on.. even with just an 80% done prototype model shooting interlaced with no cine gamma.. well thats promising enough to make this a very very happy christmas indeed. make no mistake.. this cam is going to be very tastey. skeptics can zip it. theres no substitute for real professional HD format aquisition. P2 goes down like butter.. and all that jazz.
just letting you know my thoughts on the cam after the show. happy shooting!
