Traditionally to get higher contrast film users use red filters, etc. greatly increasing the density of the sky among other things. I am planning on shooting a black and white HD picture on the HVX when it comes out. For the DVX, has anyone used filters to help capture richer black and white? How did you go about doing so and how did that work with affecting exposure and white balance? Since it will have to be shot all in color then made B&W in post.

Traditionally they used filters on the camera, now they use computers. Any reason why you wouldn't do all the color correcting in post? Seems a lot harder than its worth.

Grham Natress has a free filter for FCP that stips out just the LUMA channel from your DV video.
This is essentially 4:4:4 BW. It looks and works great. You can shoot with filters but use this post filter to do your conversion. I believe it's called G-Take.

Though distributors HATE B&W, (beware!) it does seem to make digital video look much more interesting.

Polarizing filter will help make for a more contrasty and deep b&w when you go to post as well.

This is why I LOVE this board. You guys have great tips and respond very quickly. That filter is AMAZING. Man, you don't notice some of the compression on your DV until you look at the individual channels. Fortunately the luminance is uncompressed, and unlike HDV, it's frame relative.

I think I am going to get me a red filter to use. It will also double as a neutral density lightening up some of those blacks and darkening some of those whites. Should give enough tonal information while richening up the skies. I mean, it's endorsed by Orson Welles and worked great for Bogdanovic in Paper Moon. Both Kane and Paper Moon have that HUGE depth of field.

Any other tips for great black and white or links/resources on filters and filter usage in DV (soon to be HD)?

Hey, you may want to check out this thread for some more clarification on using red filters, and the effect they have on the DVX:

Good luck!! I love B&W photography, and I can't wait to see HVX footage in black and white.

If you can get the effect you want in camera with the filter etc. then you're likely to be able to record a higher dynamic range onto tape, and although you'll still have to colour correct, you'll get better overall results, but I guess you've got to be absolutely certain you're going B/W.
