I will update this thread each day of the fest (this week Wednesday through Sunday)...

Last night was Opening Night with Gunnar Hansen! The original Leatherface from Texas Chain Saw Massacre!

Mr. Hansen was a really cool guy, and he didn't give me too much shit for never seeing the movie. Yes, I was a TCSM virgin! I was never into horror until I was asked to be a judge on last year's Horror Fest, but now I am appreciating it more (when it's done well). So anyhow, once I heard he was coming to this year's fest I decided to just wait and see it on the big screen. What a movie?! I really enjoyed it, even by today's standards it's still pretty f*cked up! :cheesy:

Tidbits from Hansen:

- he was approached to be Leatherface in each of the sequels, he had to turn them all down. The original has made over $100 million. Out of that he has seen $3000. He's the character you remember the most but yet the people who made the sequels he said didn't have much respect in terms of actor behind the mask. When he asked for more money because he didnt want to get screwed over again they turned him down thinking that anyone can play a guy in a mask. He was sad over this but once he saw the sequels he said he was happy it worked out the way it did.

- His favorite movies are Sci Fi. The last horror movie he liked was the original "Aliens". His favorite movie of all time is "Chinatown".

- He didn't comment much on "House of 1000 Corpses" but said that 1000 Corpses started out really promising (with Spaulding at the stop) then he said he felt it turned into a rip-off and less of an ode to TCSM.

He also had great stories of injuries on the set of TCSM:

- when Leatherface carries the one girl over through the doorway he ducks exaggeratingly because the first take he smashed his head off the door way (he is 6' 4" and his boots had 3" heels) and knocked himself out.

- He could only see straight ahead through his mask, one time while running with the chainsaw (they used a real one the entire shoot!) he slipped and fell on his back, the chainsaw went up in the air and came down right beside his head.

- When the old man at the gas stop beats the girl with the broomstick, they originally had a fake stick but it didnt look real. After several takes with a real broomstick the girl was getting tired and told the guy to really hit her so they could be done for the night. In the movie when he hits her and she falls forward, she was really knocked out.

- One great indie filmmaking story was the end scene when Leatherface cuts his own leg: They used a real chainsaw for it and wrapped Gunnar's leg with sheetmetal and put a steak over top of that, and a blood bag over that. He said the saw went through the bag and steak instantaneously and he felt a strong heat almost immediately after that. He pushed the saw away thinking that he cut himself. Likily it was just the metal wrapped around him burning up. He says now that was an insanely stupid idea. Ah filmmakers! We're all nuts aren't we!?

So that's day one.

Here are where the Horror Fest photos start in my album, I will upload new ones as I have them and post here when they go up:

Tonight's guests include porn star Jasmin St. Claire (I am sure at least some of you recognize that name) who stars in a movie that actually myself and my wife are in called "Swamp Zombies" which plays tonight (it was filmed with a GL2)!

I was a TCSM virgin! I was never into horror until I was asked to be a judge on last year's Horror Fest, but now I am appreciating it more (when it's done well).

Horror is my favorite genre in Cinema. THink of all the great filmmakers who have either Cut-thier-teeth in this genre or left an indelible mark:

Hitchcock - The master of suspense!
Kubrick - The Shining; one of the greatest horror films ever made
Coppolla's - Even FFC did Dracula and anyone remember Dementia 13?

Sam Raimi - The Evil Dead films
Steven Spielberg - Duel, Jaws and Night Gallery episodes
Peter Jackson - Bad Taste, Dead-Alive (Braindead) and The Frighteners
Ridley Scott - Alien and Hannibal
James Cameron - Piranha 2, Terminator
David Fincher - Panic Room, Se7en and the coming Zodiac

Think of horror films and elements of horror (suspense and thrills) and how those elements transend into other works. I had no idea you were a TCM virgin and not "too into" horror. Some of the greatest films ever made are in the vien of the horror film:

The SHining, Jaws, Alien, Psycho, Frankenstein, King Kong, Nosferatu..... Sorry minor rant.

Great report! Keep em coming!!

John,

I totally agree with you and your thoughts on the importance of the horror genre. Without getting into too many personal opinions/issues/reasons I will just say that after serving as a judge on last year's fest (watching TONS o' horror shorts) I really started to come around, and I finally bought my first horror DVD last week (Evil Dead 2), so yeah I am conforming.

I will try and get some pics up from last night and tonight up here tomorrow for you John, and thanks for visiting my thread. He he, it's all for you buddy!

Thanks for checking in HorseFilms!

OK, Thursday and Friday, days 2 and 3. All pics thusfar click here (http://www.the-lyons-den.com/photos/2005B/index_5.html)! Thursday was insanely fun with the dark Roadhouse Theatre packed to it's 220 or so capacity (standing room only just before the show started)! It was "Swamp Zombies!" night...

I was worn out afterwards and couldn't hang for the late night screenings, plus I was a bit disappointed that Jasmin St. Claire stiffed the festival so I went home to rest up. As for "Swamp Zombies!" it is what it claims to be: fun and campy with tits. The video quality was poor, the editing needed serious work, and I'm in it so the acting isn't always great ( ) but for what it is it held my attention through out. It's over-the-top horror with a double layer of cheese and the crowd gulped every bit of it down that night!

I came back straight from work yesterday and stayed till about 2:30AM. Some really great films played Friday: "Bad Reputation", "Nightmare", and "Dead" were my personal favorites. A large amount of strong violence, sex, and plot twists. If any of these come around your area definitely check them out!

I met filmmaker Ben Meade (great guy) and handled the first half of his "James Ellroy Presents: Bazaar Bizarre" but I left halfway through after seeing 45mins or so of gruesome serial killer torture re-enactments. I got the point and it was pretty sick (and really realistic) and starting to become repetitive so I decided to go meet some peeps instead. But this movie definitely doesn't dumb down psychotic killings, if you're into watching all the complete details to the six (at least) murders of Bob Berdella in Kansas City this is for you  .

The night closed with "Nightmare" :smiley_up which has more full-on nudity then anything else I can imagine seeing (after 15-20 mins in you pretty much feel you know the lead actor and actress better than some of you girlfriends/boyfriends, he he) and by the last 30 mins it is apparent twist after twist after twist. This lead to a few people shouting out at the screen in their disapproval, but I stuck it out and was impressed although I definitely have to see it again cause it gets really convoluted. The filmmakers Dylan and Morgan are great guys too... They told me they are looking for a theatrical release, sadly I say good luck, at least in America there's no way 1/8 of this nudity level with fly!

Tonight is Troma night! I can't wait, and oddly enough my brain isn't mush yet!
