Depends on what frame rate for 720. If you're shooting 720/24p it's 10 minutes, if you're shooting 720/30p it's 8 minutes, if you're shooting 720/60p it's 4 minutes.

OK,

can we capture more footage in DVCP50 ?

note...each P2 8G will then capture 20 min of 720p HD footage !
now that fits much more with my workflow !

DVCPRO50 (DV50 for short) gives you 16 minutes on an 8gb card.

Well, stupid question:
DVCPROHD has a variablr data rate, hasn't it?

How does the HVX inform you about the "time left on the card"?

can i hook up an external hard drive and record direct to that to get more time?

You can't hook up an off the shelf external hard drive to record to, but Firestore will have an external hard drive solution in 2006.

Or you can always just plug directly into any laptop and record up to the space of that internal drive (or any external drives connected to it). Obviously, this isn't very useful for big, moving shots, but if you're doing static event footage or the like, and you have a laptop already, it's F-R-E-E...

If you shoot in 720P it will have a variable framerate and therefore variable data rate.

In 1080P it will have the same datarate no matter if you shoot 24P or 30P

But it will not have variable datarate between frames in the same stream like a VBR DVD has. Every frame is compressed with the same amount of data.

Not even the HDV format has variable datarate. But because of the GOP different frames will have differant amount of data. But the stream is still 19mbs and 25mbs.

what sucks is that you only get 30 mins per card for dv.. i thought there'd be more.
that's only 10 more mins than 720p.. (i have the 8gig cards)
