Has anyone here ever gone to the Austin Film Festival? I was thinking about going this year. Is it worth it? Some of the panels sound interesting, but you never know. Sometimes you go to those kind of things and it's rehashed stuff you've hears a hundred times before.
If anyone's attended Austin before and has any comments, I'd appreciate the feedback.
Cheers,
Josh

I never went to the festival per se but I went hung out with some of teh filmmakers -- I was in college with some big project and couldn't really get to the films.
But Austin is almost always a good idea and people like Linklater and Rodriguez and Mike Judge live there and Tarantino hangs out with at least two of those three.
When Pulp Fiction came out Tarantino came to a special screening after it opened in NY and LA and before the rest of the country, on campus hosted by Linklater (Rodriguez was still in school there - UT). Afterwords everybody was invited to go to a club and hang out with them.
So anyway. I think the festival is decent or better than decent. Austin always rocks -- if teh Film fest sucks there will be lots of good music, booz, food, and Texas hotties, and sometimes the indie scene there is very accessable and party oriented. Ofcousre this was --- Jesus, 10 years ago, but Austin is Austin.
Hope that helps.

It's a pretty good deal. I submitted a trailer for the festival not too long ago and some bish with no talent won. Eh, with that aside, I think it's a great opportunity to meet and network with Austin filmmakers and beyond. Austin is my home when I'm not at school, and it is awesome.

Thanks for the replies. Too bad the damn cheap airfare I was looking at that made me want to go seems to have disappeared. Oh well, I'll keep checking the airline web sites.

Yeah, the airfare from Detroit went from $180 to almost $300 in a couple hours. :(
Sometimes the low fares reapper though. I'll keep checking. After hearing from you guys, it definityely sounds worthwhile.
Cheers,
Josh
