Smear - how to avoid?

Here are two pictures shot with the HD100. How could you avoid the smear?

Smear is a problem; it's going to happen with these tiny-pixel CCDs. The way to avoid it is to either stop down your exposure far enough that it goes away, or re-frame the shot so the hot spot isn't in the shot.
