View Full Version : How should I make my 35mm adapter?

Hey guys, I know there have been guides all over the place to make a 35mm adapter and RedRockMicro has their own DIY guide I could get, but I don't know which one I should or want to do. I've got a GL1, yeah kind of old but some of the guides are designed specifically for the GL1/2.

Right now I could do the DVDLabs version with the spinning grounded dummy CD because I've taken the motor part out of an old CD player, I have yet to find a battery pack and solder the wires to it but it would have helped to include a how-to for that part since I'm a soldering newbie, and I also have quite a few dummy CD's I could go through on the grounding part, unfortunately I've been unable to find the CD-R pack by Maxwell the guide mentions that contains an already grounded dummy CD, and I have yet to get any grounding stuff, where would I be able to find this? Would a section of plexi glass work for the piece to ground the CD with versus getting a UV 4x4 filter? Though that particular guide is meant for 37mm cameras, I can adapt it to 58mm I'm sure, also Adorama has a ton of lens mounts that screw in versus having to use epoxy or something.

Then, I could always go with the Marla 35mm adapter idea, I can easily find a macro lens on B&H or Adorama in +1,+2,+3,+4, and +10 versions. The L-board construction base I can make on a visit to Home Depot I'm sure. But the camera part is the toughest part about it. So far I've been looking for Nikon F cameras and an F3 I found was like $500! I could just say "forget it" and go get a Letus35 which seems to be doing pretty good. Does anybody know of any other cameras with removeable viewfinders? Particularly cheap? This adapter seems the easiest since I don't have to make much.

Then the Home Depot 35 adapter is an option, I can probably get it to be smaller but that may be speaking too early.

Out of all of these, I'd prefer to be able to use my Formatt matte box on the end (I've already got a 58mm adapter ring). If not, then what would you guys suggest for light control? Cardboard matte box:grin: ? Also, is there some guide on how to make a brace plate or rod support for the added heft on the front of the camera? If not, then what rod support system would you suggest I get? The whole point of this is not to spend too much money on the adapter part and possibly spending a lot on a good lens instead. Speaking of the lens, what is the definitive lens that I should be looking for? What brand? Should I be looking for a 2.8 wide angle lens? A 2.8 zoom? 1.6 telephoto? I'd imagine that a 2.8 lens would be what I'm looking for since it's faster or am I mistaken? I don't know much about lenses:(. With all of this I'm trying not to break Micro35 and G35 price levels, it is just a GL1 after all and I'm hoping to possibly make two adapters for a future 72mm+ threaded camera but that's just optional.

Well, Pete, if there was a how-to to go with that, I'd be interested. But there doesn't seem to be :undecided.

Pepsi 35? Yeah, I'm not looking for videos of stuff, I'm looking for how-to's! Looked okay, but a little too foggy, maybe that was from the compression? Love the cat by the way Dizko.

By the way, I think I might try for the Marla since the camera shop down from my college has an F2 in perfect condition. Anybody have any reason why I should go with an F3 by chance? They have that too but I wouldn't think there'd be much of a difference. If not, then I may just go ahead and get the F2.

It was from the compression, damn.. why quicktime gotta be like dat yo? kinda kills the contrast all the time. Side note, how to fix that?

Anyways, take a look http://www.timeline24p.com/pepsi35.htm

Pepsi 35 looks very inventive and original, but I'd prefer something that doesn't require a lot of tinkering. I think the Marla adapter is out, the F2 is $300 plus the $70 for a good wide lens. I also would still need to build the support for it. So all in all, I'd be better off getting a Letus 35 =P. I guess I'll look into getting a Home Depot 35 setup or something similar. You know, there really should be a definitive 35mm adapter guide.
