Or for anyone else actually... Could be a stupid question, but, how does the HDV GOP issue affect transitions, like dissolves, in FCP? - just curious because it seems that it could create a problem, especially for short (10 frm) dissolves...

I can not speak for FCP but I can for Liquid. My understanding is that FCP's method is similar to Liquid. Both use LongGOP timelines. This is a new avatar for SmartGOP from the DC-2000 days and it works by cutting the GOP at your edit point and immediately creating an I frame. The following article is Pinnacle Liquid specific but the theory holds true for all native LongGOP Mpeg2 editors.
