I'm going to buy a cheap consumer camcorder as deck. I use my dvx now to do that.
Should I buy a panasonic camcorder or doesn't make that any difference regarding the tapes etc.
Thanks

You can use any miniDV camera to do it.

I use a Sony HCR20E. I bought a Panasonic first and it didn't read the timecode from the tape shot in the DVX, so I couldn't capture into FCP. Rang Panasonic, they said that none of their consumer cams will read timecode shot on another cam. Now, I've read other people saying they use Panasonic cameras as decks, so I'm thinking maybe this issue is confined to the PAL cameras. My advice is to take a tape with you to the shop and try it out on the demo models until you find one that reads the timecode.

I've also heard that Canons can cause probs with FCP.

why not just use your DVX? will it hurt the camera to use it as a deck?

It won't hurt it, but it will put needless head hours on your DVX which will reduce its life. Might as well use a cheaper cam for that.
