Yesterday Canon Germany published its first information about the new XL H1, where You can read, that the camera will record 1080 in 25p(rogressive)! Available from December 2005 for 9.149,00 Euro (incl. of VAT). Here is the source: http://www.canon.de/about_us/news/consumer_releases/video/xlh1.asp. What are You saying now?

While I would love for this to be true, I think something is getting lost in Translation... We know that the camera in the states will shoot interlaced and somehow deliver a progressive stream from the interlaced chips, but we don't know how. I doubt Canon would make two versions of the camera. But, hey, here's to hoping!

Canon probably are more careful in the US because of the sue culture...

NTSC and it's 29.97 frame rate doesn't help at all to make progresive video cameras. On the other hand, PAL 25 frames are too easily captured at 1/25 instead of 1/50!

I am not quite sure what you mean there.
PAL and NTSC users both want progressive (or something that looks the same) so that they can emulate film. PAL achieves this at 25P in a 50i stream, NTSC can do 24p (with pulldown) or 30p in a 60i stream.
BTW, I am using 30 instead of 29.97 for simplicity's sake.

Canon Germany changed their web. Now it reads 25f not 25p... :(

Yes, but the press office does not seem to be one of perfectionists. Still You can read, that the camera can record progressive. By the way: I wrote an e-mail to the press office days ago and did not get an answer. Cool, babies!
Erm...I've never posted here before but a long time Canon fan I just had to post on this.
To be sure I got a friend who speaks German to translate this for me and it says:
"Progressive or Interlaced" which I think means that it's 50i and 25p.
When I first read abot the XL H1 i thought to myself that since PAL is 30% higher res than NTSC in SD and 1080i is 25% lest than 1080 they might make the PAL version 1080
...but then again,it says 1,67 Megapixels and 1080 is close to 2 :undecided
Don't worry,if the XL H1 does only 1080i this just means that the XL H2 will do more
And to the guy who posted "HDV..." :
Uncompressed output to what ever you storage you like :
The CCDs are 1440x1080 active pixels and that is what is recorded to tape. The pixels aren't square, and so when played back, present a 1920x1080 picture. It is the same with high end systems like HDCAM too. DVCPROHD uses even less recorded resolution of 1280x1080. HDCAM SR uses 1920x1080, but you're looking at nearly $100,000 for a deck!
