I know a lot of members have been a little worry about having to use uncompressed HD-SDI to get the most out of the camera. However, I'm just wondering since the data rate is so high and expensive to capture. Would it be possible to set a fixed or variable data rate to save on file sizes and perhaps capture to a cheaper device then a HD tape deck (for example).

If not, then would a hack or firmware update be able to incorperate an option such as this?

Or is it impossible?

Thanks for your help,

You could compress the footage as you captured it to a computer. That way there are a million (literally) different options available to you.

Personally I would go for a 4:2:2 intraframe codec (or interframe if space is limited) @ ~100Mbps. DVCPROHD fits that bill pretty well, and is well supported in NLEs. There are better codecs out there though.

Or buy this for $84,000
