I know, fcp will no doubt have it solved with an update in time for the camera's release, but I just can't get my head around how true 24p editing is possible in a native Mpeg2 environment. If a 3:2 cadence is introduced in long GOP how can discrete frames without interlace blur be extracted. 2:3:3:2 was a brilliant solution for dv that allowed 24p quicktime movies to be produced but I don't understand how this could work for mpeg. The jvc literature at least implies that it actually records 24p, I assume similar to dvd where the hardware adds the cadence on output to monitor but the canon clearly states it records with 3:2 candance in the interlaced stream. Any thoughts from thoughs in the know?

i think it's all propaganda. I smell another "cineframe".

no, i dont think that they'd do that.

They perfectly know how to achieve the 24p look. They did OK with the LX2.
They would not release a camcorder that doesn't perform at least as good as the XL2.

OK, this is far from definitive, but:

As far as I can tell, 24p DVDs are encoded through some ability to specify repetition in the MPEG stream... that is (and this is what causes the repeated questions on why DVDSP calls 24p MPEGs 29.97), the MPEG is indeed encoded as 29.97, but using MPEG's "repeat first field" and "top field first" flags, it is able to both store almost no information for the extra fields/frames (saving space and storing only "true" 24p)) and play them back in 3:2 cadence.
