I directed these little scenes in a lab class of mine at school.

They are just these two shots I am posting.. I got a few other coverage shots for the 35mm scene so I might make a little something with it.

anywho here they are:

35mm Drug Bust (http://www.dreamsoftfilms.com/filmfootage/Dug%20Bust%2035mm_1.mov)

16mm - The Smoking Shadow (http://www.dreamsoftfilms.com/filmfootage/Super%2016mm%20silouette_2.mov)

RE: 35mm Drug Bust

Its OK, but the first part of the "Drug Bust" before the tilt up to the character that is hiding behind the wall, has too much headroom for my taste. Also, the rack focus to the character that gets shot seems to come a little too late to fully reveal his reaction to being confronted by the gun.

RE: 16mm The Smoking Shadow

The scene looks better than the 35mm one in that it is a more interesting environment. Same thing on this one, don't give your characters (or even their shadows) so much headroom unless there is a really good reason. It just seems like your not making as good of use of the frame as you could. The whole shadow thing is perhaps a little too cliche, but might work as a part of a bigger scene if not overused.

everyone's a critic

I wasn't cameraman for either of these, and on the 16mm one we didn't have a video tap working.. so I couldn't see the frame as it happened...

The 35mm... the head room was intentional to see the height of their surroundings... mainly to show more of the light beams on the walls..

but they were just tests so I wouldn't look into it too much ;)

Composition is really a matter of taste and at least you had a valid reason for the way that the frame was composed (just not the way that I would do it). The scenes are a little too short to make any real comments on the direction and besides, I am just a camera op so what the hell do I know anyway.

Shooting on film is fun but lacks a little of the immediate feedback that you get from digital. Having to wait for the dailies to come back to know what you got kinda slows down the process.

PS Get the video tap going, it can be really useful!

Ya might want to think about getting a little bit of extra bandwidth and storage space before you start posting too much HD footage.
