Hey guys,
I was shooting a commercial on the beach the other day. Everything was going well until the zoom started locking up. We had a towel wrapped around the DVX the entire time to prevent sand blowing in, but i guess some still got in.
The zoom would go from 0%, then held down, go to about 70% then stop. Now, after I took it home, it just stays locked at 89%. When I have it on servo, it makes noise but doesn't spin, and manual, it feels really gritty. I'm afraid to move it too much.

Any advice on how to take the lens apart to get to the zoom? I'm fairly sure if it's easy to get to, just wiping it down with a cloth would fix the problem.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance

Send it to a shop.

If you need to ask how to open the unit up, you don't know what you're doing.

Smash it on the sidewalk. That'll get that pesky thing open.

Seriously, follow pookie's advice and have a professional do it before you do more damage to it.

I think Barry_S has some advice on how to get the lens disassembled quickly...

Yup. The trick is to let GRAVITY do all the work. :) I accidentally dumped my camera the other day and pretty much destroyed the focus assembly. I'm in the process of fixing it myself since my camera is already out of warranty and I have enough experience working with cameras to know how far I can go. At this point, I could tell you how to remove the zoom ring by careful disassembly, but you risk doing much more damage because of some delicate components like the ribbon cable that leads to the focus servo. So, either live with the grittiness or have it professionally serviced unless you don't mind the potential of a $900 lens replacement.

Thanks for the replies... I'm going to send it in somewhere.

Anyone else have any suggestions on where to send it in? This Roger Macie seem the best?

I'm also buying this, so this doesn't happen again:
