How do you guys think the following system would handle Final Cut Pro? I want to do basic editing/color correcting/simple effects, and sound work; nothing really crazy.
The system would be:
iMac g5
2 gig processor
1 gig RAM
150 gig hard drive
How much rendering would be on the fly? Any problems you can think of?
Thanks!

you would need an external hard drive. is it possible to get more ram? the more ram the better.
Otherwise I don't see a problem with it. I think fcp would do fine with that set up.

You should be fine editing standard def as long as you don't want to capture hours and hours of footage. I've done some basic editing (edit: with FCP4) on a 800mhz G4 (768Mb RAM) and it is just fine. Not the fastest in the world, but manageable.
Many times the limitation is your creativity and not the hardware, so don't get too hung up on the specs. Buy it and start editing.

You should be fine with that setup. The biggest problem you'll run into is space. I used to edit on an iMac G3 (with FCP3) and it worked fine. But I could only work on one project at a time, and they had to be smaller projects, with not a lot of footage. Render times also took a while. But if I had a long render I would just start it before I went to bed, and then it would be ready to go when I woke up the next morning.
The other problem you'll run into is the ability to upgrade. You're very limited with the iMac. But the iMac is a great and affordable place to start. And if it is what yoiu can afford, then by all means get it. When all is said and done, no one will be able to tell if you edited it on a iMac, Powerbook, or PowerMac. Just be sure to check the minimum requirements for FCP and as long as the iMac meets those (Which I believe your's does) you'll be fine.
