What are my current Mac editing sollutions if I buy this camera today?
I have a new powerbook G4. What should I expect to be able to do or not be able to do....

Thanks!

Currently, Final Cut Pro 5 handles HDV 1080i60, 1080i50 and 720p30. Of course, the JVC HD100 is the first HDV camera to record 720p60 (24P within 60P in a 2:3 pulldown pattern.) So that means that currently FCP v5.0.2 won't read your 720p60 streams (even though 720p60 has always been in the HDV spec.) Apple is usually first to act on these things and I would expect a 5.0.3 update within days or weeks.

However, you can capture the firewire MPEG2 transport streams with HDVxDV (free trial for 30 days) or Apple's DVHScap. It is developer software included in a .dmg with some other developer stuff. Just google it and you should be able to find it.
The interface captures TC, allows you to control the deck, but that is about it.

IF you want to start editing your Mpeg2 transport streams (.m2t) right now with FCP 4.5 or 5.0.2, then you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to DVCPROHD or any other codec you want. The new Apple Intermediate codec works well and doesn't seem to add artifacts - however your files will become 3 or 4 times larger. Streamclip is actually a very cool program. It will also let you view your m2t files, since Quicktime won't do it without the Mpeg2 component.

The only other weird thing is that the 24p sequence within the 60p cannot be reverse telecinéd at the moment in Final Cut Pro or Cinema Tools. This will probably be added in 5.0.3. However, when you edit 24 clips into a HD 24p sequence the pulldown frames magically disappear. A render is needed.

The bottom line is, there is a workaround right now, but alot of us are eagerly awaiting a FCP update so we can go back to the typical Log & Capture workflow.

It should be trivial for Apple to correct FCP such that it supports 24P HDV. If they implement the codec properly, it should handle it natively. Vegas 5 supports it, and Vegas 5 was released a year before HDV 24P was even contemplated. My Sony XBR960 TV set can play it through its built-in firewire transport (i.link) application. HDV Rack supports it. It seems like any application that properly supports MPEG-2 transport streams would handle it inherently.

So hopefully, Apple will release a fix soon.

I got word from a JVC rep that Apple had been working with JVC on an update, and soon.
