Flint is an up and coming band and long time friends of Mimetic Productions and myself.

http://mimeticonline.com/flint/

I was asked to direct their video debut, and after falling in love with the DVX on a feature I shot last year, chose the camera to make their video.

Take a look and would appreciate any feedback you can give.

Also feel free to check in the with the band @ www.flintsite.com

Cool video. Has that film look. Is this airing on television or just promo for the band?

Wow, loved it. Great mix of the elements, it really kept the video intriguing. Great coloring as well.
How long was the shoot?
What did you post on?

The shoot was 2 days. The first day in the warehouse was LONG. Gathering all the different takes and elements to but on the tv's since you never see the band up close until the end. Plus we built the Dolly overnight the night before the shoot and didn't sleep couldn't help much either in making the day seem longer!

The next night we shot at the cafe. That shoot was from 10pm until 6am. There's some good stills from the set at www.flintsite.com under the media section.

The television effects and the colours were posted in Adobe After Effects.

Let me know if there's anything else! Thanks for the feedback

Thanks about the dolly shots... it took some trial and error in the construction... no instructions online but if you emailed me at gavin@mimeticonline.com I'd be happy to walk you through our construction... actually there's a funny clip about how to build it going on this band's DVD that hits stores in a few months.

I really like it. It's always nice to work with a good group and song when your cutting it.

Working with a good band is great. Flint was just signed and this video goes to video networks soon. We're actually weeks away from shooting a video for their second single... so that should be a sign of the fun we had on this set.

That video was awesome. How long did it take to add all the tv images in? Was that a plug in for the vertical scroll/distortion on the tv images?

I liked some of the camera work too. Nice dolly moves and fast zooms.

Keep up the good work!

Well the music sucks so hard that the band got signed and has a video for Much Music and tours soon. ;)

Dood, who cares? They still suck! That's MY opinion.

I *liked* their music. I liked the video. Top notch.

The post-processed NTSC interlace effect was a little too sharp for my tastes, but that's just my opinion. 99.999999% of the viewing audience out there will think you video taped a TV.

My only real criticism is that you didn't get an establishing shot of the whole band early enough in the video. Granted that the lead singer looks good; still! Establish early, then play with your shots as much as you want. Even so, great work.

Can someone tell me what the light effect is on the mics and the metallic objects in the video? Is that done in post or on the set with lighting and lens filters?

Thanks

To the music critic. Fair enough. Like what you like :)

In regards to the early establishment of the band. The concept approved by the band was to NOT see them upclose or too soon in the video. But I don't disagree... typically you would see the band almost from the get go.

Glad to hear you think the majority of people out there will at least partially buy into the concept of the tv "look" on the screens.

Cheers

Nice. More than than nice. I feel so inadequate.

On the other hand, I got all excited about Don Brewer & Mel Schacher putting the band back together...and it turns out this isn't that Flint. ;-)

Great job! I really like it a lot.

Now a quick question. Was this shot using the anamorphic adapter, squeeze mode or did you just crop it in post?

Just curious cause whatever you did looks great.

Thanks

I used the Anamorphic Lens, not the internal setting for this video.

This video is pretty good besies the fact that all the effects work is amateur and looks 60I and video like but I"m assuming thats what your going for. You should also check out the site www.digitalinterference.net cuz' they have pretty cool videos anyway.

On second thought, On watching the video a few more times, I realized I missed a fair bit. There are more layers in it than i realized. and the part in to resteraunt are very well produced.

Well I'm glad you took the time to reconsider! I have seen the work at Digital Interference... always quality work... top notch. Wish I had DVX when I was 19 or 20! Wowzers.

As for layers.. I think there was 26 layers in the widest shot with all the tvs/effects.

it follows the standard first rock music video rule:

the band must be in some wierd location that would not normally be a venue for a concert, playing to no audience for no reason and the lyrics have no tie in to the plot of the video.

should fit in on mtv perfectly

though they sound and look and aweful lot like christian rockers. not that that stopped switchfoot or p.o.d.

Mimetic_Gavin

Christian rockers they are...

Fit for MTV is exactly what I was asked to provide so it would get aired on the major music networks and that's been successful. The band's goal accomplished. Not always about pure art when trying to market a band to get into the public's eye. Most videos on MTV are the perfect example of this. Doesn't mean staying inside a safety net makes it a bad video.

Your video link didn't work.

Your web site is very well designed and has a nice, user-friendly interface. Good job on that!

Try linking through going to www.mimeticonline.com/demo there's a link for the video there in the middle of a few Vanessa Carlton/Switchfoot clips I believe.

If you have Quicktime installed correctly it should work right away.

Thanks about the website!

Hey Gavin, great work. Loved the camera movement. Just wanted to know what you used to compress the video and at what settings. Thanks.

Mimetic_Gavin
10-08-2004, 06:50 PM
I used Soreson Squeeze... I can't remember the aspect ratio exactly and I set it at the highest settings I could... the actual file size was 18MB for the 4 minute video clip.

email me at gavin@mimeticonline.com and I can find out the exact specs next time I'm in front of the computer with my compression stuff on it.
