I just received the Redrock DIY guide and the etched gg glass-- and am in the process of ordering the parts. But I have built the generic "CD adapter" also. My question is, does the etched glass mirror a finer image than a transparent surface?

yes and no, it depends on the quality of the GG and the Disc. Assuming its a clear disc from the top of a CDRW stack, spinning ground glass "should" be better since a clear CD was never intended to be used for photography. Build the RR and test it against your CD adapter. ANd tell us which one is louder :)

they sent me an "etched" groundglass with my guide. and i was just wondering if that works better than the transparent. Im in the process of building the micro 35now.

if that works better than the transparent.
I dont understand the question, than the transparent what? Than the transparent plastic CD?

A transparent surface does nothing. You're basically projecting an image onto screen, so if the screen is clear, nothing gets projected. You need something which is translucent so that it allows you to see the projected image from the other side, but not see any detail through it. That's what a diffusions screen effectively does: lets you see an image that's focused on it, but blurs everything else.
Oddly, you will get a very similar image through your transparent CD, but it won't have the DOF of 35mm film. So it can be confusing.

i've never built a 35mm adapter. would it be possible to use saran wrap as GG? or would that just be terrible?

If you spray it with Pam, first.
You need SOMEthing for the image to be "projected" onto, not through.

okay, and yes it is confusing because a cd IS tranparent! okay I understand now, I was thinking of using a small piece of one-way mirror? I dont think this would work now-- so i can try to use for a ground glass a CD, a microscope slide with beezwax, or the etched redrock glass--any others out there?

Try this!!!!
I took a uv filter apart, then used the glass on another piece of glass to "GRIND IT". It'll come out blurry looking. That's the best I've seen.
1lb. 1000 Grit Aluminum Oxide with a little water and you're set!!!
