I was talking to someone on the cellphone and I could not for the life of me figure out what a few words were being said. After asking three times to repeat, I gave up and pretended to hear.
she said the theme- look of an event was going to be "Black and White" like ____ ____
with the name of the person seeming to be a well known artist.
any thoughts?
last name maybe "Stark" or "Shartz"

Why not call them back and have them reiterate the look that she was describing

What? thats just to easy. Much better to try and come up with obscure refrences that may or may not have any bearing on what the client wants.
Maybe she ment Cecil Beaton who was production designer for the 1964 production of My Fair Lady. The horse races were all done in a black and white.

Yeah, try calling back to make sure you understand each other beyond the black & white portion.
However, you asked for a guess, so... I agree with Horse that your client may have said something like, "Black and white. Stark contrast." Although, you may have heard something like, "Black and white. Starr Congress-ional Report.".
Ah heck, Pooh! Just call her back and tell her your head was in a hunny jar when you talked to her and you weren't sure what she said. :)

maybe something like Escher. when you think of Escher, you do think of the specific style and black and white.
though it was not Escher for sure. anyways, I 'll just ask again. unfortuately, even when she tells me i probably won't know right away anyways.
thanks for your brainstorms..

How about setting a precedent for good communications and ask her to go over it again. Honesty will save you lots of trouble. Just say you want to go over it again.
