we have clearance for usage of the swollen members song (and for one other - to be used in an amusing way).
so no worries on that front.
as for the DVD - yes well - the final format with be a 24p DVD master...unless the film out happens along the way...
so it will be available as soon as the sound mix and edit are completed...we'll sell them from the website - if anyone is interested we can set up some kind of deluxe-pre ordering where you get them signed and in a cool custom case.

I'll definately be buying a DVD if you guys are selling them, and I'd do the cool deluxe thing too.
Awesome work.

lol...would if i could, but i usually hit these boards from my desk in this big corporation where the firewall comes down on me like the man.. gots to get these monkeys off my back! lol .. but i need the dough to fund my new feature..so i guess im a fatality of the modern workplace for a while longer. i hate working for corporations- its like a tour in nam or somthing. i would just do private gigs for small companies to keep the flow, but then theres no health insurance and garaunteed income for my family so for now ill sit in my 90's time bubble and dream of the day i can see clips in all their wm9 glory.... i have a dream... and i will outlast this tribulation.. i believe i can fly

I downloaded the trailer last night and before it completed Mr. Sandman descended and whisked me to sleep.
Awoke this morning in my usual Haze and pressed play as I slowly swallowed my first ounce of coffee. And squinted at the green opening. That was it.
The clip instantly cleared my head and engulfed me with energy. Remarkable. Outstanding. Terrific. Thank you for injecting me with some hope for my screenplay.
I don't know if this is the correct area for this question, but how much would it cost me to import you three to come down to Seattle and put my words on screen? You are looking at a vision very close to Art History but shorter with a 39 minute running time.

Watched this the other day. Very polished and professional and "stylish." Noticed here you're talking DVD's and so on... So you folks don't do this for festival release? What are your goals and methods to achieve those goals?
Questions:
Budget? Saw 6000 (canadian) on a PDF file... What's that in dollars?
Screenplay? Who wrote it, how long did it take?
Actors? How did you get them? Auditions/screentests, agents, etc? I read they were 'established.' Was this in local theater, local tv?
Rehearsals? Any; how long?
Shooting? How many hours on how many days?
Locations? How did you get some of those locations? (ie, the empty parking garage in the pics post)
Crew? How large of a crew did you have?
thanks!
ps. forgive me if this stuff is on the site; I couldn't find it

Questions:

That is in US dollars
Screenplay? *Who wrote it, how long did it take?
Nick wrote the screenplay, he can comment on how long it took him to write :)
Actors? *How did you get them? *Auditions/screentests, agents, etc? *I read they were 'established.' *Was this in local theater, local tv?
you can look up the actors name in IMDB.. they have been in shows from the Xfiles to Dark Angel to the Scooby Doo movie..
Rehearsals? *Any; how long?
there where a couple full read throughs and a tech meeting Nick can be more specific as I missed the first ones.
Shooting? *How many hours on how many days?
They were pretty full morning to night days, 4 in total
Locations? *How did you get some of those locations? *(ie, the empty parking garage in the pics post)
Nick worked some magic with the locations.. got some pretty cool ones. The parging garage was gorilla.
Crew? *How large of a crew did you have?
There were almost 50 people invovled, crew and cast.

Hey Jarred - Nice work! The trailer looks great. I'm casting my next short and will be auditioning 50 actresses here in LA over the next couple of weeks. Someone once said "casting is 80% of directing" and (in my case at least) I think that's true. Looks like you have a good cast. And a very stylish look to the piece as well. 8)

My responses to Jarred's and original questions
Budget? *Saw 6000 (canadian) on a PDF file... *What's that in dollars?
That is in US dollars
Yes it is though I quote something I wrote in another forum here:
"Whatever budget we had is not a true reflection of how much things actually cost - point being - while I can of course disclose the number of dollars that were actualy spent...
if you try to do the same thing for the same number of dollars - I can't guarantee that you will succeed.
And yes I'm talking about deferrals, deals, favours, negotiations, cajoling, manipulating, inspiring, listening, leading (oops wait I think they call it producing) etc etc etc.
This cost $10,000 CDN - which is what like $7,300 USD.
It was a 4 day shoot.
Everybody was happy on set.
Beat that."
Screenplay? *Who wrote it, how long did it take?
Nick wrote the screenplay, he can comment on how long it took him to write :)
Yes I wrote it - had some people commenting on it and giving lots of suggestions - it was the first screenplay I ever wrote - overall took about a month - writing it on and off - what took the most time was actually condensing this into a 30 minute short because the original idea was feature length
Actors? *How did you get them? *Auditions/screentests, agents, etc? *I read they were 'established.' *Was this in local theater, local tv?
you can look up the actors name in IMDB.. they have been in shows from the Xfiles to Dark Angel to the Scooby Doo movie..
Agents, Friends, Auditions that were filmed with some evaluations afterwards - and in the case of two of the better known actors I wrote small parts specifically for them
Rehearsals? *Any; how long?
there where a couple full read throughs and a tech meeting Nick can be more specific as I missed the first ones.
Three full readthroughs with all cast - some rehearsals (maybe 3 or 4 hours in total) with the primary cast members.
On the day the rehearsals were done on the fly while we were blocking out the shots - but since we had a detailed shotlist in mind and the actors were very experienced that part of the process was not painful.
Shooting? *How many hours on how many days?
They were pretty full morning to night days, 4 in total
Day 1 - 8 hours
Day 2 - 12 hours
Day 3 - 9 hours
Day 4 - 12 hours
So not really a light schedule - but not ridiculous - not that it was a union show - but it never went into turnaround
Locations? *How did you get some of those locations? *(ie, the empty parking garage in the pics post)
Nick worked some magic with the locations.. got some pretty cool ones. The parking garage was guerilla.
We didn't have to do anything drastic - just a bit of persuasion here and there...and a little luck...we also used what we had - e.g. the apartment scenes are at my house
Crew? *How large of a crew did you have?
There were almost 50 people invovled, crew and cast.
That you can see on the site - though it doesn't show you the extra people that weren't officially on the crew list that Jarred is talking about - on our biggest day including all extras we were just under 50 - our average was more like 35
hope this was of interest.

Hey guys!
When you said some of the actors were in Xfiles, Scoobydoo, etc... and since your budget was around $10,000 CDN, does that mean that they worked for free?
If so, please advise me on how to cast and search for 'up and rising' talent and pursuade them to work for minimal to no money!
Zoom and Nick, I'd like to meet up with you two when I arrive in Vancouver sometime. If you don't mind me asking, how old are both of you by the way?

I'm 84. Zoomforce is 28.
He's pretty good for a 28 year old tike isn't he...
as to searching for people to work on your project - it basically boils down to this.
If you have a killer script and you can get actors to read it and there's a fun role for them in it - then the likelihood is they'll do it for little cash - the reason being there's not a massive amount of work for them - and they get their money off of bigger shows with serious budgets.
The kicker here is of course knowing the actors and getting them involved.
The same problem applies for crew only it's a different animal - because you can't for example entice crew by saying hey this'll look great on your showreel - because they don't generally have showreels...so then it's mostly about working environment, food, atmosphere and potential for future work...
There's no real formula for it - especially considering there's a large element of luck involved. But as with any team project it certainly helps to have an inspiring leader personality both in your producer and director - so people want to work with you and for you.

The fact that this film was shot with the DVX100 is what sold me on buying it (ETA asap). I origially was set on buying the Canon XL1s (and the fact that 28 days later was shot on it. --- But if you read the fine print:
"Dod Mantle helped matters by securing the higher-resolving Canon EC (6-40mm) and Canon EJ (50-150mm) prime lenses to the camera bodies with Optex adapters." www.theasc.com
Now I'm no expert, but how do I know that is above and beyond my price range?
Anyway, can't wait to see this final 'print'.

It would be cool if we got Panasonics support on this so we could turn it into a feature - we shoot in on DVX100's and we blow away 28 days later...
We'll see how that works out - stay tuned for a pro trailer with colour correction/2d effects etc...

couple gear questions.
1 i read on indieclub.com that you guys used prime lenses on the dvx is this true? and if so is there an adapter and how much does it cost?
2 why a 6x6 mattebox.
3 i saw a pic where you were using 2 cameras simultaneously on some sort of rig. something to do with the opening shot of the film. what exactly were you doing (if you don't mind)
Thanks. And GREAT JOB!!!!
nickybee
09-13-2003, 10:42 PM
you can get a prime lens adapter for the DVX100 - I have seen pictures of it on the PS Technik website - but I have never seen one in reality.
WE did NOT use prime lenses.
We used the panasonic made anamorphic adapter but that's it - everything else was regular on-camera stuff.
We used a 6x6 mattebox as opposed to 4x4 or even 3x3 because of the size of the anamorphic adapter you need a 6x6 or else you get vignetting on full wide.
as to the double camera rig - here's a rough test clip - which will explain the effect we were going for - http://www.stealart.com/test_title.wmv
Enjoy - hope this answers all the questions.

Although I viewed that at home on my wifes 'ghetto' computer, the imagery is flat out amazing. The second part of the shot is awesome.
I cannot even wait to get this camera. (OCT 15th is the date and you guys will be hearing about it constantly).
I was unable to figure out what effect you were going for on this (this is due to my wifes a** clown of a computer, which, by the way is also on the list of purchases that must be made soon; how can I edit films at home without a kick a** computer?)
Can someone explain to me what they see? Or I have to wait till Monday at my office.
nickybee
09-14-2003, 01:01 AM
When you say "what effect we were going for ?" do you mean on the trailer as a whole, the film or the title sample that I linked to...
the title sample needs to be seen at full frame rate for the correct effect to be observed...basically the idea is stitching two frames together to make a really wide frame which we can push back and forth into and out of...
as to the power of the computer - the trailer was edited on my laptop - which granted is not way old...but is not insane either.
you'd be surprised what you can do with a little time and some decent ideas (and some ok software)...
I'm happy you're getting the camera - I certainly think you're making the right decision...
will keep all you guys in the loop as to how the story unfolds with panasonics involvement in this project.

Nevermind. I got it. I originally watched on my wifes computer (ghetto with a capital G); This a.m. I watched at my office and Now I an see what you were doing:
The 'pan' or 'wipe' (surely there is a tech term for this effect? If not, you should make one up)
That looked great. W o W. I am being tortured.
Zoomforce
09-15-2003, 10:24 AM
its like a pan and wipe together.. maybe we should call it a pwipe. :)
Me and Nickybee actually made a better rig last week that should give a better result, maybe we can do a better demo soon.
J.R. Hudson

Maybe a panawipe? :D
dualpani :-/
Anyway, very innovative. Lately I have been thinkning of rigs similiar to this; I wonder:
1. How much is train track rails (I'm talking about the kind on the mini railroads you see at the mall...)
I wonder if this material could be combined to make a rail system that could be mounted literally anywhere and the camera rig put on it. Anyway, brain is always working.

new trailer being cut as we speak.
composer has been selected - which I'm very happy with.
We're calling in a few post production favours as well.
We are aiming to complete fine cut, score, sound mix, colour correct by Nov 7th in time for the DV festival.

I bought this DVD solely to judge the quality of the DVX. Nick actualy emailed me asking where I heard about it. This short was pretty much the reason I bought the DVX100A.
