I'm trying to determine my editing workflow and need some guidance.

I'm planning videos of 5-15 minutes duration. I have a reasonably powerful PC where I can edit and render them in reasonable time on Sony Vegas. The original footage is in H.264 codec from Canon T3i.

I read that transcoding the footage to ProRes 422 and then editing on FCP would give better results in terms of speed and quality. I'm planning to have the final output in 1020p HD at least.

How much of a difference would it make in the final quality? I'm planning to promote the clips online mainly. They are not meant for TV broadcast but I would like to have the best possible final result even if it means buying a Mac, getting FCP and learning it. Should I stick with Sony Vegas or go the Mac/FCP route?

Please advise me. Thanks.
