I'm thinking of going retro and in honor of the fest's return, shoot this on the good old stock DVX100b!

FEATURING:
Chistie Liberty Moonbeam Feathers (yep... you read that correctly!)
Ward Benoit

ORIGINAL SCORE:

Of course it warms my heart to see a film submission from Zaza. And a vintage 100b? Nice!

Still at it I see. But it also warms my heart to see a posting from Richard Johnson!!!! Last I remember one of your kids poured a soda on your computer or something. I'm starting to go through that sort of crap in my household with a two and four year old. Not much time for making short films.

BUT! I should finally get my s**t together and make Pugzilla for the horrorfest. I've been talking about it for years......

Film submissions > Pixel peeping

Bring back the old school DVX spirit!

Can't wait to see what Zaza cooks up for this one. We can always count on the Z to deliver something out of the box.

I don't see a film thread from you yet, Frosch. Do it! :D

This afternoon, I dug out & fixed-up a 1970's ladies Schwinn "Breeze" for the film. These bikes were built like tanks... a couple new tubes, one new tire, a quick front hub adjustment, spit & polish and she's good as new (for a bike that's 30 years old)!

...now I have to find an old front basket for it.

O.K., I know the camera world has advanced 10-fold over the last few years....and you might call me crazy...but I just blew the dust of the old DVX100b and reacquainted myself with her.
I have to say, I fell in love all over again! This camera still captures beautiful images that are pleasing to the eye. It is the perfect choice for the look & feel I'm shooting for on this film.
It's a pleasure to hold her once again in my hands.

Yes... the new cameras are awesome....2K.....4K....UltraHD, but lets us not forget what brought us to this point and started this great forum.
All hail the mighty DVX100!

Aww, good to know I'm remembered.

I don't normally go in for horror, but your return to the DVX100 has got me rolling around a horror-spoof idea. We'll see if I can get it together.

My DVX is more "vintage" than yours. I'm still rockin' a DVX100a (along with less-retro HD cams).

Yay for the return of DVXFest!

p.s. - I just hit submit and saw that my signature still has the banner from Thrill Fest three years ago!!!!! Have I really been away that long??!??!?

So far so good... I think. We are scheduled to shoot this Sunday morning and all day Monday at the barn.
I'm heading to the barn tomorrow to bring some gear and do some last minute set-dressing and to block some shots out.
The gear is safe as this is a friends place, so that helps a lot.

My only worry is that he just got his latest chicken order...about 200 chicks will be housed in the far side of the barn...he tells me they aren't noisey!

Shot list is complete for both days and with a little luck, it will stop raining long enough to shoot.

Zaza!!! Are you kidding me right now?? That was awesome! You can tell that you've been finished with this film for as long as you have. Everything was pretty much spot on and you got plenty of coverage and all the extra shots you needed. I'm very, very impressed. Love your dolly shots and the two greatest cinematic moments in the film were the bicycle wheel spinning as the truck drives off and seeing the silhouetted bad guy standing in the barn door the first time. Love your style and editing for this film. Outstanding job. So glad to see it when filmmakers show growth and you most definitely have by leaps and bounds. Geesh, thanks Marlon (you're probably my favorite male actor in this fest by the way, but I'll get to that in your thread), your comments mean a lot to me. You never know what you're going to get when you use Craigslist actors, a single stock DVX100b (yes, it really is just the good old DVX) and a ZazaSlider of course. You all know how it is, you have a vision of what you'd like to get but it doesn't always turn out as planned. I got lucky and was able to pull it off this time (I think, I hope). Another interesting point (or not), the ONLY sound captured to tape that was used was the van tire driving along...everything else was ADR, again for what I think is that 70's feel.

marlon took the words outta my mouth, real growth from you as a director. I really liked the film and especially liked the 70's exploitation vibe you went with.
Thanks Matt... but my favorite part is the bad guy standing in the barn door...and that all came from hearing your tune, it was just the perfect fit! SPOILERS. PLEASE STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS SHORT.

What I liked: Zaza, really solid job. Had I not read that you did most of the audio in post, I wouldn't have known. As I was watching, anticipating for him to eat her (the fresh meat), I suddenly realized that "meat" might have been a double entendre. Kinda grossed out by the title after that. Of course I really liked the 70s feel to it, too. Great job with that. Also, you nailed the creepiness of the whole thing. I felt ... dirty ... after watching this. Which I think is normal for this kind of movie.

What I didn't like as much (take this with a grain of salt, as it's just an opinion): I will say that it did feel a little drawn out to me. I think it could have been a solid minute or two shorter. Also the ending kind of threw me with her reveal. If she was a monster, why did she hang around so long? Why did he yell and not swing?

Small things.

All in all, this is your best work yet. Solid entry.

Feeling a little drawn out is a good thing...I wanted to impart a feeling of torture and hopelessness. The flashbacks hopefully helped to show his process of 'cleansing'. This is a story of Jehovah's quest to rid the world of evil, even if the evil isn't so evil. Jamie is just your everyday vamp living right along with the rest of us, but even a contained monster can only take so much before they crack....and the hunter becomes the hunted.

As far as swinging the cleaver, he simply didn't have time and didn't expect to see her directly behind him in that split second.

Thanks for watching & commenting, I'll be getting you your film this weekend!

Hey Zaza, I wanted to throw some more out there. Again, my favorite of all your films. The coloring and texture was excellent. I loved the SFX make-up and even the finger nails on the close-up of the hands was done and really worked. The shots were excellent and I liked the B-Roll that filled everything in. What I wanted to commend you most on though was you taking a risk. Not just using the DVX but more specifically the rape scene. This is one of those areas that can go wrong quick if not done right. You took a risk...more than one and it clearly paid off.

I would like to see this film turned into a feature. It looks like one of those cult classics.

Joe! I really think this is your best yet, by far. The scene on the bike was really well done. I have a script that requires a "spinning bicycle tire" like yours, and I would have shot it very much like you did. It's a very powerful image and you nailed it. Great opening to the movie.

The guy standing in the entrance of the barn was great, too! Loved that shot.

My main critique is that less is more. Kill your darlings. I would hack a good minute or two off this edit. Keep things moving. When we start to see the same image(s) over and over again they lose their effectiveness. That's my only gripe with this short. Everything else is spot on.

One of the best in the fest. Well done. Perfect for HorrorFest.

My advice, cut this shorter and send it off to other festivals.

Good luck!

Solid entry Zaza. Don't know that I can really add much other than echo what others have said. But I really liked the 70's exploitation feel, I think you nailed that aspect. To me though this definitely seemed to drag on a bit and think it could be much more impacting with a few minutes shaved offed the edit. I really liked the intro and end music and the spinning wheel shot.
I did however think the lighting in the barn was too bright, now I don't mean overexposed, I mean it all felt too bright for the mood of what was happening. I also got a little lost with the reveal at the end. Overall though a nice entry that really felt like a 70's exploitation film.

Hey, Zaz, finally getting the computer to cooperate.

Seems I recognize the actress from Miss Laid?

Love the 'mars invades' title opening. Kinda threw me back to 50s/60s sci-fi creep stuff.

Not really diggin' the opening with the flower sniffing and such. Reminds me of a Stay Free commercial. I think too, you can chop a few seconds from the ride/follow. The hit is pretty much telegraphed, so just get to it! Love the hit 'n scream, and the spinning wheel. Nice sound on the clicking.

Sweet job on the make up, scrapes and road burn.

Nice spook on the eye. Yikes! But why is her lip bleed missing in that chained-leg scene?

My rod, my staff? Funny.

Bits of choppy edit very effective.

Wow, cool ending. Not sure what made her like that - or she already was? - but nothing beats sweet revenge.

Nice job, Joe. I think an adjustment up front, maybe a metaphor of sorts, is needed, but this has creepy written all over it.

Thanks Chris...and yes, I've been told that all my life. Maybe this will help:

It was a beautiful summer morning in the Backton County Township,
a day like any other, and Jamie decided to take a leisurely bike ride.

Jehovah was a religious man, raised in a strict puritan home by an
abusive mother, and he had a mission to cleanse the world of its sinners
& ‘evil doers’, no matter how twisted his methods may be.

Bike ride gone bad, Jamie finds herself held captive and the center
of Jehovah’s cleansing ritual. Little did she know of the horrors that
awaited her... horrors that bring out the beast within. Driven to the
very edge, she gives in and the hunter becomes the prey.

Huh, cant say I enjoyed this one too much. I felt the rape scene was completely tasteless and unnecessary to show. Subtly is the key, my friend.. even for the overly-used exploitation genre.
Furthermore, scenes that could have been twice as short, werent. I understand keeping things slow and intense... but I dont think the effect worked as well as it could have in this case, it just sort of dragged to me. Think in general it would have greatly benefited from some cleaner editing, cutting away extra fat of the... Fresh Meat ;)
Couple awkward edits where when she gets hit by the car and turns around, she looks like she isnt even moving on the cycle. Then at the end when he turns around and doesnt swing, but that was probably intentional i'm assuming.
Otherwise, I got the vibe you were going for, so if this was your true vision, then I say you did it justice.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jace... If FRESH MEAT left a bad taste in your mouth, then I hit my mark. This was SUPER tame compared to most exploitation films of the 70's, I suspect that you're a little too young to have been around for those. I'd recommend you don't watch them, you probably wouldn't like them. (example: "I Spit on your Grave") I also think you missed the point completely, the idea was to recreate a 70's film, in a 70's style... I think you're comparing it to more modern productions. A LOT has changed since the 70's my friend. I don't think Aliens and The Godfather are the genre Zaza is talking about or basing his film off of. In addition, the scene where she turns and gets hit IS in fact nearly identical to the retro 70's films. In fact, having grown up with these films personally, I thought this was "the" scene that showcased what he was going for. Time, budget, equipment and even talent used when making this film... I thought this was a great film. Lastly, I understand we all have our tastes and have a standard of what we digest for our entertainment but I thought Zaza took a major risk, if not the biggest of all the films shooting that rape scene and he pulled it off.

Hey man nice work sir.

Some great shots.
Faves include the spinning bicycle wheel and the sunlight and dust motes through the cracks in the barn roof - maybe on of the best shots ever on user?

Agree with others that you captured a nice 70s exploitation vibe.
Also feel that it could be trimmed significantly. Some of the shots and suspense don't hold as long as you stay on them iMHO.

SPOILERS

After the reveal, I didn't understand why a vamp would put up with a second of this. You've deflected the criticism before by saying that she's driven to the edge and then breaks and changes. But for most of us the edge would be pre-rape and torture. Or the second the torture or rape starts - for sure. Maybe she's like the hulk or something and she's trying not to change and be good or something? That's interesting but we have no way of knowing that. It's basically like showing someone get kidnapped and raped and tortured - then AFTER all that you reveal they had a gun in their ankle holster, easily within reach the whole time. At which point we ask why not shoot the guy before he rapes you or at least brandish your gun (your fangs) to get him to back off. Again maybe once the fangs are out there's no stopping her and she's trying to be a good vampire but all we know is that, at the end, you reveal to us that she's infinitely more powerful than her captor but literally laid back and let it all happen - so you lost me there, sir.

Again, great vibe and some great shots!

First off... thank you for even watching, let alone commenting on the film! MOST appreciated.

I guess I was thinking more "Carrie" on this one... she was trying to be a good monster until she just couldn't take it any more.
It wasn't until she realized he was going to 'clever' her that pushed her over the edge. I missed my mark, live & learn.

I guess I was thinking more "Carrie" on this one... she was trying to be a good monster until she just couldn't take it any more.
It wasn't until she realized he was going to 'clever' her that pushed her over the edge. I missed my mark, live & learn.

Cool. Yeah what you're saying makes sense.

This is always an extensive conversation on most of the stuff I shoot.
"We're being too obvious with this."
"No way they'll ever get this we need to make it clearer."
"Well they may not get this but that doesn't matter as long as they get this."
"Maybe but if they don't get that too then it will seem like we overlooked it."
etc. etc. etc.

I've erred both ways.

Again, cool vibe man.

Joe my old friend.......

Finally got around to watching the whole thing. Solid, technical work, but I'm afraid I must echo a few of the negative critiques. But first the positive:

-the transition from the zazavision logo to the first shot is note-perfect.
-The spinning bike wheel shot was awesome
-The dust shimmering through the cracks in the wall round 3:13
-The use of the ol' DVX. wonderful! for the purposes of youtube you pulled it off well. I'm sure this would look good on the big screen as well. some nice grading.
-There is some nice editing trickery/flashes of light, screen distortions....whatever you did it works nicely for me.

The bad:
-Definitely could have been cut down. This does drag a bit. If you are trying to emulate the pacing of grindhouse 70's films so be it, but it didn't work for me.
-The exact same sentiment JDS wrote after "spoilers" Could not have said it better so i won't.
-The rape scene. (Jace summed up my thoughts as well) I'm not as well versed in the grindhouse genre from the 70's. Not my bag. Times have changed I understand. I'm not into the whole torture/horror genre.

I think you've shot & directed better.....but this one has its moments. I'd score the cinematography higher than the story.

You know, life is short and if you're not having fun...what's the use?
I think I laugh more at my films then anyone else! I just love making them.

I think everyone looks forward to Joe's entry. We just know it's going to be fun in a good way, good in a fun way.

I've seen those gnomes in another film? Are there subliminal message inserted? Is this safe to watch while eating?

:)
